Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Work of the Bollandists: Through Three Centuries 1615-1915 Several years ago, the distinguished librarian of the Accademia dei Lincei at Rome, pronouncing a eulogy in warmest terms upon the Acta Sanctorum, recalled the fact that the Bollandists would have occasion in the year 1915 to celebrate the tercentenary of the publication of the Vitae Patrum of Rosweyde, a work which marks the inception of this great enterprise. Now, to tell the plain truth, the Bollandists were in that year much more concerned with the progress of their labors than they were to commemorate any anniversary. Book Synopsis Memory's Library by : Jennifer Summit
Download or read book Memory's Library written by Jennifer Summit and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-11-15 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Jennifer Summit’s account, libraries are more than inert storehouses of written tradition; they are volatile spaces that actively shape the meanings and uses of books, reading, and the past. Considering the two-hundred-year period between 1431, which saw the foundation of Duke Humfrey’s famous library, and 1631, when the great antiquarian Sir Robert Cotton died, Memory’s Library revises the history of the modern library by focusing on its origins in medieval and early modern England. Summit argues that the medieval sources that survive in English collections are the product of a Reformation and post-Reformation struggle to redefine the past by redefining the cultural place, function, and identity of libraries. By establishing the intellectual dynamism of English libraries during this crucial period of their development, Memory’s Library demonstrates how much current discussions about the future of libraries can gain by reexamining their past.

Book Synopsis The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Retirement Series, Volume 8 by : Thomas Jefferson
Download or read book The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Retirement Series, Volume 8 written by Thomas Jefferson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-29 with total page 833 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume Eight of the project documenting Thomas Jefferson's last years presents 591 documents dated from 1 October 1814 to 31 August 1815. Jefferson is overjoyed by American victories late in the War of 1812 and highly interested in the treaty negotiations that ultimately end the conflict. Following Congress's decision to purchase his library, he oversees the counting, packing, and transportation of his books to Washington. Jefferson uses most of the funds from the sale to pay old debts but spends some of the proceeds on new titles. He resigns from the presidency of the American Philosophical Society, revises draft chapters of Louis H. Girardin's history of Virginia, and advises William Wirt on revolutionary-era Stamp Act resolutions. Jefferson criticizes those who discuss politics from the pulpit, and he drafts a bill to transform the Albemarle Academy into Central College. Monticello visitors Francis W. Gilmer, Francis C. Gray, and George Ticknor describe the mountaintop and its inhabitants, and Gray's visit leads to an exchange with Jefferson about how many generations of white interbreeding it takes to clear Negro blood. Finally, although death takes his nephew Peter Carr and brother Randolph Jefferson, the marriage of his grandson Thomas Jefferson Randolph is a continuing source of great happiness.
