Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Women of the American Revolution, Vol. 2 The morning passed the sun sank low in the horizon. The hospitable host smiled as he saw the Colonel's faithful attendant, Bishop, true to his orders, holding his master's spirited steed at the gate. The veteran waited, and marvelled at the delay. Ah, Bishop, savs a fair writer describing the occurrence, there was an urchin in the drawing-room more powerful than King George and all his governors! Subtle as a sphynx, he had hid den the important despatches from the soldier's sight, shut up his ears from the summons of the tell-tale clock, and was playing such mad pranks with the bravest heart in Christendom, that it fluttered with the excess of a new-found happiness l Mr. Chamberlayne insisted that no guest ever left his house after sunset and his visitor was persuaded, with out much difficulty, to remain. The next day was far advanced when the enamored soldier was on the, road to Williamsburg. His business there being despatched, he hastened to the presence of the captivating widow. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Women of the American Revolution, Vol. 1 When Mrs. Ellet compiled her history of "The Women of the Revolution," she could not have foreseen the deep interest in Colonial and Revolutionary history, that was destined to mark the last decade of the Nineteenth Century, nor could she have realized that the various patriotic societies that were to be organized among women, would lead to as great an interest in the lives of the mothers as in those of the fathers of the Republic. Yet the writer of these sketches of noted women has prepared for just such a phase of American life, which makes her work now appear a prophecy of the future as well as a summary of past events. "The Women of the Revolution" having been published in the middle of the century, the material for these biographical sketches was collected while some men and women were still living who could recall the faces and figures of the statesmen and soldiers of the Revolutionary struggle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Women of the American Revolution, Vol. 3 of 3 It can hardly be necessary to apologize for the appearance of a third volume of this work, in view of the favor with which the first have been received, and the general interest manifested in the subject. The materials for these new memoirs are derived altogether from private sources. It will be seen that I have occasionally added to sketches of the women, notices of brave men nearly related to them, whose services deserved mention, with anecdotes illustrative of the war or the state of the country. This has been done only where no account of the individual or of the incident is given in any published work. Many among the actors in that momentous drama, whose deeds should have been recorded, are scarcely mentioned by name in historical books, and no full history has ever been written of some parts of the Confederacy. It seemed, therefore, a duty to rescue from oblivion well authenticated facts which were likely to be of value to the future historian. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of the American Revolution, Vol. 1 The foundation of these stories is historically true. The incidents of home-life, of the struggles of the women and children who were left to defend themselves as best they could, of the privations, bravery, and heroism of those who never went upon a battlefield, have been too much neglected. The men who shouldered their muskets, and at the peril of their lives went forth to meet the foe, are not likely to be forgotten but the no less heroic deeds of those who were left behind are Ofttimes slighted. We have studied the battlefields sometimes to the exclusion of the lives of the men and the women. The author in putting forth these stories con fesses to one grave fear. He would not in any way enkindle today a feeling of hatred towards the mother country. There are too many reasons why the relations between the two lands should be, and should continue to be, friendly, for him in any way to try to keep alive the feelings which prevailed during the Revolution. The times have changed, and it is to be hoped that we may change with them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Revolution, Vol. 1 The author of this volume is aware that an expectation exists, among those who have read "The Early History of Charles James Fox," that he would carry on the account of that statesman's life from the point at which he dropped it eighteen years ago. When the consideration of the project was seriously approached, it became evident that the difficulties of writing a political biography, as distinguished from a political history, were in this case insuperable. The story of Fox, between 1774 and 1782, is inextricably interwoven with the story of the American Revolution. That immense event filled his mind, and consumed his activities; while every circumstance about him worth relating may find a natural place in the course of the narrative which bears upon it. During that part of the great drama which was enacted within the walls of Parliament, Fox was never off the stage; and, when there, he played a conspicuous, and (as time went on) confessedly the leading, part. MERCY WARREN The name of Mercy Warren belongs to American history. DEGREES In the influence she exercised, she was perhaps the most*remarkable woman who lived at the Revolutionary periodA She was the third child of Colonel James Otis, of Barnstable, in the old colony of Plymouth; and was born there, September 25th, 1728.* The Otis family came to the country in 1630 or 1640, and settled first in Hingham. The youth of Miss Otis was passed in the retirement of her home, in a routine of domestic employments, and the duties devolving upon her as the eldest daughter in a family of high respectability. Her love of reading was early manifested; and such was her economy of time, that, never neglecting her domestic cares or the duties of hospitality, she found leisure not only to improve her mind by careful study, but for various works of female ingenuity. A card-table is preserved by one of her descendants in Quincy, as a monument of her taste and industry. The design was her own, the patterns being obtained by gathering and pressing flowers from the gardens and fields. These are copied in worsted work, and form one of the most curious and beautiful specimens to be found in the country. * This date, with that of her death, is takei from the entries in the family Bible at Plymouth At that period, the opportunities for female education were extremely limited, but perhaps the more prized on that account. Miss Otis gained nothing from schools. Her only assistant, in the intellectual culture of her earlier years, was the Rev. Jonathan Russell, the minister of the parish, from whose library she was supplied with books, and by whose counsels her tastes were in a measure formed. It was from reading, in accordance with his advice, Raleigh's "History of the.
