Book Synopsis The Swiss in the United States by : John Paul von Grueningen
Download or read book The Swiss in the United States written by John Paul von Grueningen and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published under the auspices of the Swiss-American Historical Society, this book is a collection of essays on topics of interest to persons of Swiss origin, especially those whose ancestors came to America after 1840. The book derives its title from its first and longest chapter, a description of the Swiss-American population in 1930. State by state, Mr. von Grueningen describes the Swiss presence in 1930, accounting for early settlements, occupations, city and county distribution, and changes in Swiss-American demography over time. The remaining chapters feature a potpourri of Swiss historical and genealogical topics. Three chapters treat the Swiss in California. The researcher can read separate accounts of the expeditions of Heinrich Lienhard and Albert Kyburz as they journeyed from Switzerland to join their countryman Johann August Sutter, the central figure in the California gold rush. The fourth chapter concerns the establishment of an Italian-Swiss colony in northern California (San Francisco, Sacramento, etc.) by emigrants from the canton of Tessin (Tecino). In another chapter, genealogists will find many names and dates highlighting the Swiss pioneers of New York and New Jersey. The final chapter discusses the role of Swiss clergy (Catholic, Reformed, etc.), as well as missionary efforts among the Winnebago Indians. In all, this scarce volume refers to nearly 2,500 Swiss or Swiss-Americans.

Book Synopsis Taking the Jesus Road by : LeRoy Koopman
Download or read book Taking the Jesus Road written by LeRoy Koopman and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the Reformed Church's relationship to Native Americans is one of persistence and optimism in the face of overwhelming odds. Unfortunately, it's also a story that reflects all too well the sad record of U.S. dealings with America's first inhabitants. In this frank, well-balanced account of the Reformed Church's Native American missions and churches, LeRoy Koopman recounts the spiritual journey of the "Jesus Road" shared by Reformed and Native American Christians. "Taking the Jesus Road" outlines how government and church often cooperated with each other in implementing shifting policies that allowed the native peoples little or no voice in their own destiny. Koopman does not hesitate to point out how early missionaries often equated the Christian faith with white culture but also gives credit for their tireless efforts to seek a better life for the people they were serving. Much of the book is devoted to the stories of particular ministries, including the six Native American congregations that remain a vital part of the Reformed Church today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Black Hawk War was the final conflict east of the Mississippi River between American Indian communities and the United States regular troops and militia. Exploring the museums, wayside markers and parks relating to that struggle is not just a journey of historic significance through beautiful natural scenery. It is also an amazing convergence of legendary personalities, from Abraham Lincoln to Jefferson Davis. Follow the fallout of the war from the Quad Cities on the Illinois/Iowa border, through the "Trembling Lands" along the Kettle Morraine and into the Driftless Area of southern Wisconsin. Pairing local insight with big-picture perspective, Ben Strand charts an overlooked quadrant of America's frontier heritage.
