Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wingate Anaerobic Test was designed more than 30 years ago and is one of the reference tests for making assessments related to ATP/PCr and Glycolytic metabolisms. The test consists of a 30-second all out test performed on a cyclo-ergometer. Perhaps due to the evolution of the cyclo-ergometers used to carry out the test, or because it was initially designed with a sedentary population and has been used equally by sportsmen and women of all levels and ages, the original protocol has undergone some variations. Some research even shows the importance of modifying this initial protocol depending on what we want to assess and the population we are analyzing. The objective of this book is to make the test protocol well known, what it aims to measure and its characteristics, but above all to serve as an aid for its correct application, taking into account all the variables that can influence the results of the test.

Book Synopsis Rhythm, Music, and the Brain by : Michael Thaut
Download or read book Rhythm, Music, and the Brain written by Michael Thaut and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of modern cognitive neuroscience and new tools of studying the human brain "live," music as a highly complex, temporally ordered and rule-based sensory language quickly became a fascinating topic of study. The question of "how" music moves us, stimulates our thoughts, feelings, and kinesthetic sense, and how it can reach the human experience in profound ways is now measured with the advent of modern cognitive neuroscience. The goal of Rhythm, Music and the Brain is an attempt to bring the knowledge of the arts and the sciences and review our current state of study about the brain and music, specifically rhythm. The author provides a thorough examination of the current state of research, including the biomedical applications of neurological music therapy in sensorimotor speech and cognitive rehabilitation. This book will be of interest for the lay and professional reader in the sciences and arts as well as the professionals in the fields of neuroscientific research, medicine, and rehabilitation.

This book was released on 2009-02-21 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book by Corey H. Evans, Russell D. White, and coauthorsis a gem. There was a time when exercise testing was largely limited to cardiologists, but no more. Ex- cise testing, which providesinformationon tness, the risk of coronarydisease, and all around vitality, is now being performed in the of ces of primary care physicians across the United States. Although there is a signi cant risk in some populations, a careful doctor who takes the trouble to become knowledgeable in exercise physiology and the pat- physiologyof coronary artery disease can use exercise testing to improve his ability to give excellent, preventive medicine. Over the years I have read many books on this subject, and even contributed to some, andthis oneratesrightup therewith the best. Likemanymultiauthoredbooks thereissomerepetition, butthisisnotallbad.Acarefulstudyofthevariouschapters willprovideadepthofknowledgethatwillcomeingoodsteadwhenproblemsarise. I can especially recommendthe chapter on exercise physiology. When the reader has mastered the material presented in this chapter, he has acquired a knowledge base so that he can become an expert in exercise testing equal to almost anyone. Over the years I have been privileged to know several of the authors and have followed their publications. Their contributions to our knowledge base in this eld havebeenconsiderable.Acquiringthisbookandbecomingfamiliarwithitscontents will set you apart in the eld of exercise testing.
Book Synopsis A Simplified Version of the Wingate Anaerobic Power Test by :
Download or read book A Simplified Version of the Wingate Anaerobic Power Test written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was undertaken to develop a modified Wingate anaerobic power (WAP) test that could be administered with a minimum of equipment and personnel. This study was done in the summer of 1989, under contract with the University of North Carolina. The accuracy of using the time to pedal either 240, 270, or 300 M (at a resistance of 0.095 kp/kg of body weight) on a stationary ergometer as a predictor of mean power output from a standard WAP was examined. Forty-four healthy male volunteers participated in the study. Significant correlations were found between completion time and the standard WAP mean power output (r = -0.55 to -0.57); however, extensive predictive error (aprox. 15%), was found to exist when the bivariate regressions from the correlation analyses were used to estimate mean power output. Multiple regression analysis, however, indicated that use of time to completion, and exercise resistance setting as independent variables resulted in highly significant multiple R values (0.98 to 0.99), and relatively accurate predictive capability (approx. 3% error).

Book Synopsis Maximal Power Outputs During the Wingate Anaerobic Test by : J. F. Patton
Download or read book Maximal Power Outputs During the Wingate Anaerobic Test written by J. F. Patton and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the resistance settings which elicit maximal values of power output (PO) values during performance of the Wingate Test (WT). Nineteen male subjects performed multiple WT in a random order at resistance settings ranging from 0.055 to 0.115 kg/kg BW. Tests were carried out on a Monark cycle ergometer modified to permit instantaneous application of resistance. Revolutions were determined by a computer interfaced frequency counter. The mean resistance settings eliciting the highest peak power (PPO) and mean power (MPO) outputs were 0.096 and 0.094 kg/kg BW, respectively (average setting of 0.095 kg/kg BW). Both PPO and MPO were significantly higher (15.5% and 13.0%, respectively) using a resistance setting of 0.095 compared to the Wingate setting of 0.075 kg/kg BW. The test-retest reliability for PPO and MPO ranged between 0.91 and 0.93 at both resistance settings. Body weight, % body fat and thigh volume did not significantly estimate the individual resistance settings eliciting maximal PO's. The data suggest that resistance be assigned according to the subjects BW but consideration be given to increasing this resistance from that presently used in various laboratories.

Download or read book Current Research in Sports Sciences written by R. Maughan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two main reasons for pursuing research in the Sports Sciences. Firstly, by studying responses to exercise, we learn about the normal function of the tissues and or gans whose function allows exercise to be performed. The genetic endowment of elite ath letes is a major factor in their success, and they represent one end of the continuum of human performance capability: the study of elite athletes also demonstrates the limits of human adaptation because nowhere else is the body subjected to such levels of intensive exercise on a regular basis. The second reason for studying Sports Science is the intrinsic interest and value of the subject itself. Elite performers set levels to which others can as pire, but even among spectators, sport is an important part oflife and society. of top sport and elite performers, there is also another reason Apart from the study for medical and scientific interest in sport. There is no longer any doubt that lack ofphysi cal activity is a major risk factor for many of the diseases that affect people in all coun tries: such diseases include coronary heart disease, obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. An increased level of recreational physical activity is now an accepted part of the prescription for treatment and prevention of many illnesses, including those with psychological as well as physical causes. An understanding of the normal response to exercise, as well as of the role of exercise in disease prevention, is therefore vital.
