This is, however, not the only worthwhile reason to visit the church: besides the church music tradition with the renowned St. Thomas Boys Choir, the church's architectural and art historical heritage merits a trip. The church guide, which is available in German and English, gives an overview of the most important facts about St. Thomas Church, illustrated with many images. Besides interesting details about the colourful and chequered history of the church and the parish as well as past and present of St. Thomas Boys Choir and its most famous cantor Johann Sebastian Bach, the guide includes useful tips regarding service schedules and opening times.

Book excerpt: This complete, illustrated history of Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue (New York City) chronicles the first 175 years of one of the great parishes of the Episcopal Church.Drawing on primary sources and original research, J. Robert Wright portrays the building, congregations, and rectors who have given shape to the historical development of Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue, More than the history of a single parish, this volume is valuable for its reflection of the whole Episcopal Church and, more broadly, for its insights into the challenges of church life against the background of modern culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eight Windows By Joseph A. Koncelik Eight Windows is a fictional story spanning 100 years. The author grew up on the south shore of Long Island and has roots in the Czech community, the Episcopal Church and the life on Great South Bay from which this story is drawn. At one time, this place was the location of numerous estates built by New York City’s blue bloods – including private churches that reflected their wealth and life style. The tale begins with the creation of eight Tiffany windows for a church built on an estate in 1912 overlooking Great South Bay in the Town of Oakdale. This fictional estate is called Kairos by a turn-of-the-century Wall Street tycoon, Cedric Vandercamp. The story flexes from the present day to flashbacks in time during the creation of the windows by a talented young priest, Julius Cherveny, and the wife of Vandercamp, Eleanor Bouffort Vandercamp, but removed from the church and hidden by Eleanor’s abusive and jealous husband. Those precious and priceless windows are rediscovered in 2012 and stolen in an elaborate plot by a murdering thief named Karl Banecek, an accomplice, Emil Joaquim Darktow, and his cohorts called Saligia. A mysterious priest with secret connections to the crime enlists the aid of a female private detective, one Daisy Patience Fleabane Reidlos. She is charged with uncovering the plot, catching the murderer of a church sexton who protected the windows and retrieving them. Greed is the common theme spanning the 20th century; one of the seven deadly sins. Those sins are represented by members of Saligia. They are opposed with righteous force by the presence of a church vestry made up of seven heavenly virtues. Woven into the story is the ill-fated love affair of two star-crossed lovers who design the windows; the resurgence of the Kairos estate, first as a destination wedding location by the nefarious antagonists, and eventually as a mission-based rehabilitation center when the estate is recovered for the Episcopal Church. That weaving of this story also includes an unusual connection between a clever private detective and a powerful Mafioso don. The reader will find authenticity in the story through its connection to a time, place and the personalities of people who contribute to the broad diversity of Long Island. The author has provided illustrations of the windows as well as more than 20 other drawings to illuminate the tale.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Stained Glass in Catholic Philadelphia tells the remarkable story of the thousands of stained-glass windows - made in America, England, France, and Germany - in the more than 400 churches, chapels, and institutions of the five-county Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Since 1997 more than 450 sites have been visited to document the archdiocese's windows by photographing them. This process resulted in the creation of a photo archive of over 50,000 images. Using this archive as a foundation, a team of scholars - from a variety of institutions and with specialties in medieval studies, architectural and social history, Christian iconography, decorative and liturgical arts, the craft, creative reuse, and historic preservation of stained glass - was assembled to study these windows. The result is this profusely illustrated book of original research that makes accessible a significant and highly visible, but neglected, aspect of our ecclesial, national, and regional cultural heritage."--BOOK JACKET. Book excerpt: Windows, shadows and reflections have always fascinated me. We both look at windows, through them and past them. They bring light and a new vista but also allow us to peep at that which is beyond - the everyday and horizons yet unexplored. In playing my very small part in the shaping of the windows in the porch of Our Lady and St Thomas Church in Willington, Co. Durham., and the miracle of grace that a book by Sister Dorcy, which was the inspiration for the pictures, and fell into my hands, I entered into yet another journey. I pondered not just the mystery behind each picture but in the way they reveal the scene beyond. Beautifully etched, they take the eye and heart beyond the surface to the Altar and how Jesus is present to us today. Drawn to write on these I did so when a bout of serious illness visited me. This was a graced period for reflection. I pray the maybe a little sentence can bring a new light to that wonder that is our Mother who points to the source of all light Jesus HImself.
