Download or read book Republic written by Alice Hunt and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2024-09-24 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Alice Hunt brilliantly reanimates this most extraordinary decade. It is a gripping tale of political and cultural crisis but also one of joy and hopeful innovation, told with eloquence and passion.' MALCOLM GASKILL 'A magisterial, compelling and eye-opening biography of Britain's great and extraordinary experiment.' SUZANNAH LIPSCOMB Events moved with giddying speed in the 1650s. After the execution of Charles I, 'dangerous' monarchy was abolished and the House of Lords was dismissed, sending shock waves across the kingdom. These revolutionary acts set in motion a decade of bewildering change and instability, under the leadership of the soldier-statesman Oliver Cromwell. England's unique and distinctive republican experiment may have been short-lived, but it changed the course of British history. It transformed the relationship between England, Scotland and Ireland, reset the compact between the monarch and the people, and re-fashioned the story the British told - and continue to tell - about themselves. REPUBLIC is a richly engrossing year-by-year account of this exhilarating and daring period. It tells the story of what Britain's republic was really like: why it failed, but also, what it got right.

Book Synopsis Wagons and Wagon-graves of the Early Iron Age in Central Europe by : C. F. E. Pare
Download or read book Wagons and Wagon-graves of the Early Iron Age in Central Europe written by C. F. E. Pare and published by Oxford University School of Archaeology. This book was released on 1992 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concerns the four-wheeled wagons of the Early Iron Age and particularly the practice of wagon burial in Central Europe. First offering a typological classification of the material from the Urnfield and Hallstatt Periods, Pare then examines the technical aspects of wagon construction, and the information that may gained about the role of the wagon through other sources - including pictorial representations, wagon models, and horse-gear. His study brings to light a wealth and variety of evidence for the ceremonial use of the wagon, and places the wagon burials of the Hallstatt Period within a long European tradition of the use of wagons in cult.

Book Synopsis The Use of Grave-goods in Conversion-period England, C.600-c.850 by : Helen Geake
Download or read book The Use of Grave-goods in Conversion-period England, C.600-c.850 written by Helen Geake and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study comprises a descriptive analysis of the entire range of Anglo-Saxon grave goods and an exploration of their causes and meanings from the 7th and 8th centuries, a time when kingdoms went through far-reaching changes in their ideologies, trade relationships and social structures. The first half of the book consists of discussion of identification of the data, the grave-goods types, the cultural affliations of grave-goods and interpretation of the data. The second half consists of a gazetteer of conversion-period Anglo-Saxon burial sites, numerous maps and pages of figures illustrating the artefacts. Geake concludes that the grave-goods from this period expressed a `pan-English neo-classical' identity, an Anglo-Saxon imperial ideology, drawing heavily on Roman prototypes and that this identity was promoted by the church and the state to legitimise the power of their hierarchies.

Book Synopsis Digging for Richard III: The Search for the Lost King by : Mike Pitts
Download or read book Digging for Richard III: The Search for the Lost King written by Mike Pitts and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2014-11-11 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the archaeology behind the dig that found Richard III, told through a fascinating array of photographs, diagrams, and firsthand accounts In August 2012 a search began and on February 4, 2013 a team from Leicester University delivered its verdict to a mesmerized press room, watched by media studios around the world: they had found the remains of Richard III, whose history is perhaps the most contested of all British monarchs. History offers a narrow range of information about Richard III which mostly has already been worked to destruction. Archaeology creates new data, new stories, with a different kind of material: physical remains from which modern science can wrest a surprising amount, and which provide a direct, tangible connection with the past. Unlike history, archaeological research demands that teams of people with varied backgrounds work together. Archaeology is a communal activity, in which the interaction of personalities as well as professional skills can change the course of research. Photographs from the author’s own archives, alongside additional material from Leicester University, offer a compelling detective story as the evidence is uncovered.
