Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, From Its First Beginnings to the Present Time, Vol. 6: Including Chapters of Newly-Discovered Early Wyoming Valley History, Together With Many Biographical Sketches and Much Genealogical Material; Biographical In the general affairs of Nanticoke Mr. Challenger takes an interested part, and is known widely as one of the community's most public-spirited citizens. Politically, he is in uential, but employs his in uence to the best ends, and quietly. F raternally, he is a member of Lodge No. 541, Free and Accepted Masons; Caldwell Cousis tory, at Bloomsburg, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, and Irem Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. Also, he is a member of the Knights of Pythias, lodge of Nanticoke, and a communicant of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In matters of charity, as in all others, Mr. Challenger deals largely; his con tributions are made without thought of race or creed benefited. During the World War, while somewhat too advanced in years for service in the military, he did serve, tirelessly and well, on the many boards and committees in charge of prosecution of the con ict from within this country, and was instrumental most' beneficially to the country in the Liberty Loan campaigns. Best known for its rich deposits of anthracite coal, the Wyoming Valley was first colonized by Connecticut settlers in 1769. Electric trolleys served many urban centers in Pennsylvania. Trolley service in the Wyoming Valley started in 1888 and lasted for more than 60 years. Trolley lines went through the boroughs and townships of Ashley, Courtdale, Edwardsville, Forty Fort, Hanover, Kingston, Larksville, Miners Mills, Nanticoke, Parsons, Pittston, Plains, Plymouth, Sugar Notch, West Pittston, West Wyoming, Wilkes-Barre, and Wyoming. Greater Wyoming Valley Trolleys features rare photographs dating from the 1890s to 1950 documenting the trolley system and the communities of the Wyoming Valley.

Book excerpt: Wilkes College (now Wilkes University) football was the talk of the nation in the late 1960s when the team went undefeated from Oct. 9, 1965 to Oct. 18, 1969. During this five-season run, the Colonels won 32 consecutive games. captured or shared five Middle Atlantic Northern Division titles; were awarded two Lambert Bowls in 1966 and 1968, symbolic of eastern small college supremacy; and honored by the Washington, DC Touchdown Club in 1969 with its "Timmie Award," as the most outstanding team in the nation. Guiding the team was Head Coach Roland C. "Rollie" Schmidt, a Wilkes-Barre, PA native, who was a stickler for detail, technique and preparation and masterminded one of the greatest successes in small college football history. Many of his players during that era were the first generation of their families to earn a college degree. A majority of these individuals came from the Greater Wyoming Valley area, that surrounds Wilkes-Barre, PA where Wilkes University is located. Some were sons and grandsons of Anthracite coal miners, who came to Northeastern Pennsylvanian from Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in search of better life for their families. The Wyoming Valley of Pennsylvania has a rich high school football tradition that dates back to the 1880s. Football was one of the first sports that was introduced by the College in 1946 when it was known as Bucknell Jr, College, soon to be renamed Wilkes College in 1947. "Zeus and the Boys" is the story of Rollie Schmidt and the team's special time in history. The book is about members of those teams and how their football experience provided important lessons for their professional career growth.

This book was released on 2022-04 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Connecticut Yankees began to settle the Wyoming Valley in the 1760s, both the local Pennsylvanians and the powerful native Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) strenuously objected. The Connecticut Colony and William Penn had been granted the same land by King Charles II of England, resulting in the instigation of the Yankee-Pennamite Wars. In 1788, during ongoing conflict, a band of young Yankee ruffians abducted Pennsylvania official Timothy Pickering, holding him hostage for nineteen days. Some kidnappers were prosecuted, and several fled to New York's Finger Lakes as the political incident motivated state leaders to resolve the fighting. Bloody skirmishes, the American Revolution and the Sullivan campaign to destroy the Iroquois all formed the backdrop to the territorial dispute. Author Kathleen A. Earle covers the early history of colonial life, war and frontier justice in the Wyoming Valley.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wilkes-Barre PA is a dying city. It is time to pick ourselves up by the bootstraps and begin our return to glory. In the middle of the last century, Wilkes-Barre’s population was approaching 90,000. Today it is 43,000. This did not happen overnight. Over the years, many of the city’s kind benefactors, such as the Kirby family, helped keep the city vibrant. Whenever it needed a boost, they were there to rejuvenate. Having had half the population move out of town, Wilkes-Barre no longer could count on a local family to be there at the right time with the right answer. Wilkes-Barre saw its population declining with the mines no longer sustaining the City. We noticed stores, even the best of the best shutting down or moving out from necessity. We all noticed that other businesses that once provided hundreds of jobs not being able to continue. Mark Twain once said that “The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.” Wilkes-Barre officials and residents over the years have heard the death knell for the City and instead of contesting it fiercely, allowed it to happen. Like Twain, our demise has been greatly exaggerated. Those times are in the past. Wilkes-Barre can and must find its way out of the mire and return to glory. May good leadership help Wilkes-Barre find a way to reclaim its future. Those who grew up in this City, as well as those who love our Diamond City, will enjoy this book. Few books are a must-read but Brian Kelly’s Wilkes-Barre, PA: Return to Glory! will melt your heart as your author recounts some great stories from the past and points out how to stop the decline and move this city back to Glory. This book needs to be at the top of your reading list, especially for those who have lived or now live in Wilkes-Barre.
