Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wild Tribes of India The chief abode of the aboriginal races to be described is the centre of the peninsula - namely, the Vindhya mountains, which run east and west, from the Ganges to Guzerat, and the broad forest-tract extending north and south from the neighbourhood of Allahabad to the banks Of the Godavery; but they are not necessarily the aborigines of the places they now occupy. In the Vedas the Dasyas are spoken of as having given a great deal of trouble and annoy ance to the Brahmans; and they were apparently pushed into their present homes by successive tides of invaders operating against them, and often appear as if they were cut off into small parties in their flight, portions of the same race being found scattered in different corners of the country. The main divi sions of the Darya race as now seen are: the Gonds, the Bheels, the Kolis, the Mairs and Meenas, thc Khonds, the Koles, and the Sonthals; but they are not all one people - at least not at the present day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethnography: Castes and Tribes 1. The subject with which it is proposed to deal in the present work is that branch of Indian ethnography which is concerned with the social organisation of the population, or the dispersal of the latter into definite groups based upon considerations of race, tribe, blood or occupation. In the main, it takes the form of a descriptive survey of the return of castes and tribes obtained through the Census of 1901. The scope of the review, however, is limited to the population of India properly so called, and does not, therefore, include Burma or the outlying tracts of Baluchistan, Aden and the Andamans, by the omission of which the population dealt with is reduced from 294 to 283 millions. 2. It should be borne in mind from the outset, that but for the fact that this vast aggregate is spread over a continuous area between Cape Comorin and the Himalaya, and is politically under one rule, the population does not contain, as a whole, any of the essential elements of Nationality. Irrespective of racial differences, which, for reasons which will appear below, are to a great extent outside the Census inquiry, the Language, falling under no less than 147 heads, varies from Province to Province, each of the principal tongues having its dialects whose Shibboleth infallibly denotes the stranger a hundred miles or so from his native village. Society, again, is split up into almost innumerable self-contained divisions, under sacerdotal prohibition from intermarriage and domestic intercourse with each other. Religion, moreover, constitutes a well-defined distinction only in the case of creeds introduced from abroad, and the Faith returned under a single title, itself of foreign origin, by nearly three fourths of the population covers a vast and incoherent collection of beliefs and forms of worship, from the tribal animism of the primitive denizens of the forest to those involving the most refined metaphysical conceptions. Neither religion nor language, then will be here discussed more than cursorily, and solely in their bearings upon the ethnography of the country. Full information upon the philology and the main currents of religious belief of India will be found in special treatises upon those subjects in other volumes of this Encyclopaedia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian Tribes of the United States, Vol. 1 of 2: Their History, Antiquities, Customs, Religion, Arts, Language, Traditions, Oral Legends, and Myths IN the following pages the attempt has been made to place before the public in a convenient and accessible form the results of the life-long labors in the field of aboriginal research of the late Henry R. Schoolcraft. The extensive and valuable materials collected by him with so much patience and assiduity were published some years ago by the United States government, and they form a body of reliable data concerning the Indian tribes within its borders such as does not elsewhere exist. By a careful process of elimination and condensation the six bulky quartos of the origi nal work are now reduced to two portable volumes, without, it is believed, impair ing the value of the work to the general reader. Some portions have been largely rewritten, in order that the fruits of recent investigations into the origin, language, and antiquities of the Indians might be incorporated in it, and the historical out lines, general and tribal, have been filled up by the introduction of prominent events which had been omitted. The Introduction, presenting at one view the past and present status of the Indian, the portions of the work that include an account of the present condition of the tribes, and the chapters containing the history of the last thirty years, are the work of the editor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Castes and Tribes of Southern India, Vol. 1: An and B Society of Bengal, I commenced an investiga tion of the tribes of the Nilgiri hills, the Todas, Kotas, and Badagas, bringing down on myself the unofficial criticism that anthropological research at high altitudes is eminently indicated when the thermo meter registers 100° in Madras. From this modest beginning have resulted - (i) investigation of various classes which inhabit the city of Madras (2) periodical tours to various parts of the Madras Presidency, with a view to the study of the more important tribes and classes; (3) the publication of Bulletins, wherein the results of my work are embodied (4) the establishment of an anthropological laboratory; (5) a collection of photographs of Native types; (6) a series of lautem slides for lecture purposes; (7) a collection of phono graph records of tribal songs and music.
