Book excerpt: In his comic strip, Rubes, cartoonist and "sit-down" comedian Leigh Rubin takes a careful look at everyday situations and human nature--and then pokes fun at them. The result is a hilarious and often uncannily accurate exploration of our crazy life and times. Featuring favorite Rubes cartoons handpicked by Rubin himself, The Wild and Twisted World of Rubes is a best-of collection that serves as a wonderful introduction to the comic strip People magazine calls "sneakily funny." Syndicated internationally by Creators Syndicate, Rubes is one of the most popular single-panel cartoons in the country. Rubes appears daily in more than 400 newspapers and is also featured each week as "Rubes Friday Funnies" on the long-running, nationally broadcast program AgDay. Leigh's blog, Tales from a Twisted Mind, is a consistent favorite on AgWeb and draws in tens of thousands of readers each month. Rubes is also featured in calendars as well as on T-shirts and greeting cards.

Book excerpt: Sports, politics, and sex collide in Hunter S. Thompson’s wildly popular ESPN.com columns. From the author of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and father of “Gonzo” journalism comes Hey Rube. Insightful, incendiary, outrageously brilliant, such was the man who galvanized American journalism with his radical ideas and gonzo tactics. For over half a century, Hunter S. Thompson devastated his readers with his acerbic wit and uncanny grasp of politics and history. His reign as "The Unabomber of contemporary letters" (Time) is more legendary than ever with Hey Rube. Fear, greed, and action abound in this hilarious, thought-provoking compilation as Thompson doles out searing indictments and uproarious rants while providing commentary on politics, sex, and sports—at times all in the same column. With an enlightening foreword by ESPN executive editor John Walsh, critics' favorites, and never-before-published columns, Hey Rube follows Thompson through the beginning of the new century, revealing his queasiness over the 2000 election ("rigged and fixed from the start"); his take on professional sports (to improve Major League Baseball "eliminate the pitcher"); and his myriad controversial opinions and brutally honest observations on issues plaguing America―including the Bush administration and the inequities within the American judicial system. Hey Rube gives us a lasting look at the gonzo journalist in his most organic form―unbridled, astute, and irreverent.

John McGraw won his first pennant as a manager and repeated the feat the following year with the team he later called his greatest. His Giants were praised for their playing ability and criticized for their rowdy behavior. Meanwhile the Cubs were putting together the greatest team in franchise history, emphasizing speed on the bases, solid defense and outstanding pitching. Jack Chesbro won 41 games in 1904 by employing a new pitch--the spitball. Other pitchers began using it, accelerating the trend toward lower batting averages. The White Sox entered baseball lore as the "Hitless Wonders," winning the 1906 pennant through adroit use of "scientific baseball" tactics.

And then, like an avenging angel bringing knowledge of a weapon so terrible it had been used but once in the history of the universe, came a Warrior-Princess to strike the shackles from people who wanted only to live in peace. STIRRING NOVELETS OF ALIEN WORLDS THE BLUE BEHEMOTH (by Leigh Brackett) Shannon’s Imperial Circus was broke—and jinxed. Its biggest asset was a blue Venusian cansin. And then, in a grey Venusian swamp, the asset became a liability which had to be paid for in human lives. THREE PLANET SHORT STORIES STRANGER FROM SPACE (by Hannes Bok) He was a god from space—and strangely inhuman. GRIFTERS’ ASTEROID (by H. L. Gold) It was a special con men’s free-for-all—three slickers outgyping each other. MENACE OF THE MISTS (by Richard Storey) A mindless horror poured from the sea-bottoms of Venus.

Book excerpt: If Henry Hasse (1913–1977) is remembered today, it is probably as the co-author of Ray Bradbury's first published story, “Pendulum,” which appeared in November 1941 in Super Science Stories. He published only one novel, The Stars Will Wait, from a minor publisher in 1968. From the late 1930s to the early 1950s, however, he was a frequent and popular author in the pulp science fiction magazines, publishing more than 50 adventure stories such as the ones presented here. One, “He Who Shrank,” was anthologized in the seminal science fiction anthology, Adventures in Time and Space, edited by Raymond J. Healy and J. Francis McComas. (If the title sounds familiar, you might also have read it in Isaac Asimov’s anthology, Before the Golden Age.) He published his last two stories—probably unsold tales from his pulpster years—in Whispers in the 1970s. Included are: THE BEGINNING THE STAR OF SATAN ALCATRAZ OF THE STARWAYS REVENGE OF THE VERA STAR OF PANADUR THIEF OF MARS CITY OF THE LIVING FLAME PROKTOLS OF NEPTUNE WE’RE FRIENDS, NOW OUT OF THIS WORLD WALLS OF ACID ONE PURPLE HOPE! After attending the Sac and Fox agency school and Haskell Indian Junior College in Lawrence, Kansas, he transferred to Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania. At Carlisle he led the football team to victories over some of the nation’s best college teams-Army, Navy, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Pennsylvania, and Nebraska. In 1912 he participated in the Olympic Games in Stockholm, winning both the decathlon and pentathlon. It was then that King Gustav V of Sweden dubbed him "the world’s greatest athlete." Between 1913 and 1919, Thorpe played professional baseball for the New York Giants, the Cincinnati Reds, and the Boston Braves. In 1915 he began playing professional football with the Canton (Ohio) Bulldogs. When the top teams were organized into the American Professional Football Association in 1920, Thorpe was named the first president of the league, which was renamed the National Football League in 1922. Throughout his career he excelled in every sport he played, earning King Gustav’s accolade many times over.

Book excerpt: “Reminiscent of Ursula Le Guin’s paradigm-shattering The Left Hand of Darkness, this piercingly moving story belongs in most fantasy collections.”—Library Journal There are secrets beneath her skin. Sorykah Minuit is a scholar, an engineer, and the sole woman aboard an ice-drilling submarine in the frozen land of the Sigue. What no one knows is that she is also a Trader: one who can switch genders suddenly, a rare corporeal deviance universally met with fascination and superstition and all too often punished by harassment or death. Sorykah’s infant twins, Leander and Ayeda, have inherited their mother’s Trader genes. When a wealthy, reclusive madman known as the Collector abducts the babies to use in his dreadful experiments, Sorykah and her male alter-ego, Soryk, must cross icy wastes and a primeval forest to get them back. Complicating the dangerous journey is the fact that Sorykah and Soryk do not share memories: Each disorienting transformation is like awakening with a jolt from a deep and dreamless sleep. The world through which the alternating lives of Sorykah and Soryk travel is both familiar and surreal. Environmental degradation and genetic mutation run amok; humans have been distorted into animals and animal bodies cloak a wild humanity. But it is also a world of unexpected beauty and wonder, where kindness and love endure amid the ruins. Alluring, intense, and gorgeously rendered, Ice Song is a remarkable debut by a fiercely original new writer. Praise for Ice Song “A stunning debut fantasy about love and the ties of blood.”—Armchair Interviews “Kasai’s debut is a boldly adventurous tale depicting a richly detailed world. The aspect of Traders shifting gender brings Ursula K. LeGuin’s The Left Hand of Darkness to mind, while the activities on Chen’s island are more reminiscent of Laurell K. Hamilton’s Meredith Gentry novels.”—Booklist “Ice Song is definitely a compelling read, largely due to the fact that Sorykah is such a well-developed character. She has an equally intense and complex sense of love and resentment for her children. And the fact that she exists between the world of humans and the mutants is also a source of conflict for her character . . . Ice Song is a near-perfect combination of fantasy, great storytelling and social commentary.”—Philadelphia Gay News

Book excerpt: In an "epic, game-changing, moving and brilliant" story of love and hate, two immortals chase each other across continents and centuries, binding their fates together -- and changing the destiny of the human race (Viola Davis). Doro knows no higher authority than himself. An ancient spirit with boundless powers, he possesses humans, killing without remorse as he jumps from body to body to sustain his own life. With a lonely eternity ahead of him, Doro breeds supernaturally gifted humans into empires that obey his every desire. He fears no one -- until he meets Anyanwu. Anyanwu is an entity like Doro and yet different. She can heal with a bite and transform her own body, mending injuries and reversing aging. She uses her powers to cure her neighbors and birth entire tribes, surrounding herself with kindred who both fear and respect her. No one poses a true threat to Anyanwu -- until she meets Doro. The moment Doro meets Anyanwu, he covets her; and from the villages of 17th-century Nigeria to 19th-century United States, their courtship becomes a power struggle that echoes through generations, irrevocably changing what it means to be human.

Book excerpt: This World Fantasy Award winner in the vein of Animal Farm delves into a lab worthy of a mad Nazi scientist—but run by a brilliantly sadistic rodent. In the annals of American literature, there has never been a character quite like Doctor Rat, PhD. From one of the most indispensable storytellers in speculative fiction, this biting satire introduces a narrator of learned charm and humor, and a twisted logic that is absolutely chilling. Doctor Rat is a credit to his species. A survivor of the most refined scientific experiments, now removed from the maze, he has become a valued and productive member of the academic community. When he must administer a lethal dose, he comforts his fellow rats with his compassionate slogan: “Death is freedom.” But everything changes when animals worldwide begin to rebel, refusing to accept their proper places in the natural order of things: as test subjects, pets, or food. And only Doctor Rat has the courage to defend mankind from the ungrateful animal kingdom. Hailed by the Los Angeles Times as “dazzlingly original” and “occasionally quite beautiful,” Doctor Rat is a sly and stylish indictment of fanaticism in mice and men. “A truly imaginative impresario . . . [Doctor Rat] teases your conscience with educated wit and versatile improvisation, not to mention the casual flick of the tail about to be cut off.” —Kirkus Reviews
