Book excerpt: Across Black Spaces gathers and builds on a diverse array of essays and interviews by American philosopher and leading public intellectual George Yancy. Within this multidisciplinary framework are works from The New York Times, The Guardian, and other major media outletswhich have drawn international acclaim for their spotlight on vicious racial tensions in American academia and society at large. With this collection of revised and updated works, Yancy engages a vast scope of social, political, historical, linguistic, and philosophical themes that together illustrate what it means to be Black in America. Four sections of the book engage, first, moral outrage at contemporary ethical crises; second, the search for identity and value of vulnerability; third, the history and present values of Black and Africana philosophy; and fourth, the essential role of African American language in understanding Black lived experience. Representing twenty years of persistent inquiry and advocacy, Across Black Spaces celebrates Yancy’s undeniable importance in American intellectual progress and essential social change.

Book Synopsis The Re-Institutionalization of Higher Education in the Western Balkans by : Brankovic Jelena
Download or read book The Re-Institutionalization of Higher Education in the Western Balkans written by Brankovic Jelena and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2014-04-30 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher education in the Western Balkans is currently undergoing substantial changes as a result of European reform ideas, new domestic policy initiatives as well as universities and colleges in the region trying to adapt to new expectations and challenges. The book analyzes the changes in both policy and practices in various countries in this region predominantly through a comparative approach. Through a number of empirical studies in which new data was collected and systematized, the book shows how countries in the Western Balkans are struggling to maneuver between adapting to broader European reform ideas while at the same time handling domestic challenges. Hence, the book is a valuable contribution to those interested in studying how various higher education systems are developing in the different European regions.

Book Synopsis Black Sisterhoods: Paradigms and Praxis by : Denise Davis Maye
Download or read book Black Sisterhoods: Paradigms and Praxis written by Denise Davis Maye and published by Demeter Press. This book was released on 2022-03-18 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sisterhood is oft elusive, if not a misunderstood concept. Despite all the factors that could impede the development, elevation, and maintenance of sistering relationships, Black women continue to acknowledge the value of sisterhoods. Sistering offers a lifeline of support and validation. Holding membership in an empowering woman-centered relationship is a special kind of privilege. The authors in this volume contest any assumption that sisterhood is limited to blood relationships and physical proximity. In this volume, we consider sisterhood simultaneously as paradigm and praxis. We approach Sisterhood as Paradigm and attempt to parse out the nature of Sisterhood as it is understood in Black communities in the United States. We hope to convey an organized set of ideas about “sisterhood” to create sisterhood as a model of interaction or way of being with one another, specifically among Black women. As we consider how sisterhood could be enacted as practice. Using Sisterhood as a framework, we explore Sisterhood as Peer Support, examining how Black women provide support to peers in academic and professional settings. we embark on a provision of applied exemplars of sistering in emerging digital media in Digital Sisterhood.

Book Synopsis The Social Engagement of Social Science, a Tavistock Anthology, Volume 1 by : Eric Trist
Download or read book The Social Engagement of Social Science, a Tavistock Anthology, Volume 1 written by Eric Trist and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-01-11 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World War II brought together a group of psychiatrists and clinical and social psychologists in the British Army where they developed radical, action-oriented innovations in social psychiatry. They became known as the "Tavistock Group" since the core members had been at the pre-war Tavistock Clinic. They created the post-war Tavistock Institute of Human Relations and expanded on their wartime achievements by pioneering a new mode of relating theory and practice, called in these volumes, "The Social Engagement of Social Science." There are three perspectives: the socio-psychological, the socio-technical, and the socio-ecological. These perspectives are interdependent, yet each has its own focus and is represented in a separate volume. Volume I, The Socio-Psychological Perspective, extends the object-relations approach in psychoanalysis to group, organizational, and wider social life. This extension is related to field theory, the personality/culture approach, and open systems theory. Action-oriented papers deal with key ideas in social psychiatry, varieties of group process, new paths in family studies, the dynamics of organizational change, and the unconscious in culture and society. The Institute's dynamic social science approach to industrial problems, which will be presented in Volume II, began with Eric Trist's coal-mining program for the development of more productive and personally satisfying self-regulating forms of work organization. The whole "Quality of Working Life" movement owes its theoretical and empirical basis to this pathfinding endeavor. Volume III will focus on non-hierarchical forms of organization facilitating inter-organizational relations in complex and rapidly changing environments—the socio-ecological perspective. This perspective is offered as a guide to institution building for the future.
