Book Synopsis Elements of a Science Plan for the North Pacific Research Board by : National Research Council
Download or read book Elements of a Science Plan for the North Pacific Research Board written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-04-06 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The North Pacific Research Board (NPRB) was established in 1997 as custodian to a pool of funds intended for the study of the North Pacific Ocean, Bering Sea, and Arctic Ocean. The success of the NRPB is the development of a high quality, long-range science plan that provides a better understanding of ecosystems and their fisheries in the region. This report provides a framework to help the NPRB identify appropriate science themes and mechanisms for administering and distributing the funds. It contains extensive input from residents of Alaskan communities, to help scientists understand and address issues of importance to the local communities. The book makes specific recommendations on long-term research priorities, the NPRB management structure and the development of future programs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originating from a series of workshops held at the Alaska Forum of the Fourth International Polar Year, this interdisciplinary volume addresses a host of current concerns regarding the ecology and rapid transformation of the arctic. Concentrating on the most important linked social-ecological systems, including fresh water, marine resources, and oil and gas development, this volume explores opportunities for sustainable development from a variety of perspectives, among them social sciences, natural and applied sciences, and the arts. Individual chapters highlight expressions of climate change in dance, music, and film, as well as from an indigenous knowledge–based perspective.

Book Synopsis Arctic Ocean Sediments: Processes, Proxies, and Paleoenvironment by : R. Stein
Download or read book Arctic Ocean Sediments: Processes, Proxies, and Paleoenvironment written by R. Stein and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2008-07-22 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although it is generally accepted that the Arctic Ocean is a very sensitive and important region for changes in the global climate, this region is the last major physiographic province of the earth whose short-and long-term geological history is much less known in comparison to other ocean regions. This lack of knowledge is mainly caused by the major technological/logistic problems in reaching this harsh, ice-covered region with normal research vessels and in retrieving long and undisturbed sediment cores. During the the last about 20 years, however, several international and multidisciplinary ship expeditions, including the first scientific drilling on Lomonosov Ridge in 2004, a break-through in Arctic research, were carried out into the central Artic and its surrounding shelf seas. Results from these expeditions have greatly advanced our knowledge on Arctic Ocean paleoenvironments. Published syntheses about the knowledge on Arctic Ocean geology, on the other hand, are based on data available prior to 1990. A comprehensive compilation of data on Arctic Ocean paleoenvironment and its short-and long-term variability based on the huge amount of new data including the ACEX drilling data, has not been available yet. With this book, presenting (1) detailed information on glacio-marine sedimentary processes and geological proxies used for paleoenvironmental reconstructions, and (2) detailed geological data on modern environments, Quaternary variability on different time scales as well as the long-term climate history during Mesozoic-Tertiary times, this gap in knowledge will be filled.*Aimed at specialists and graduates *Presents background research, recent developments, and future trends*Written by a leading scholar and industry expert

This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our objective is to analyze data from the western Arctic Ocean and its adjacent seas in order to provide a measure of the variability of the shelf-basin system that is observationally based; identify, and where possible quantify, the important physical mechanisms controlling this system; contribute to the Shelf-Basin Interaction initiative (SBI), particularly in understanding the mechanisms of shelf-basin exchange; and promote further improvements in the rapidly growing array of models of arctic circulation and hydrographic structures and their variability, including providing patterns and statistics against which to test the fidelity of these models,
