Book excerpt: "This is a story from the Rwanda of 1994. Life was difficult enough in Rwanda for a boy in the early 1990s, and Faustin's father did not make it any easier with inexplicable rules and dark secrets. Teachers at school began to emphasize the division between the Tutsis and Hutus, a division that made its way to the soccer field..."--Back cover.

Book excerpt: Private associations organized around a common cult, occupation, ethnic identity, neighborhood or family were among the principal means of organizing social and economic life in the ancient Mediterranean. They offered opportunities for sociability, cultic activities, mutual support and contexts in which to display and recognize virtuous achievement. This volume collects 140 inscriptions and papyri from Ptolemaic and early Roman Egypt, along with translations, notes, commentary, and analytic indices. The dossier of association-related documents substantially enhances our knowledge of the extent, activities, and importance of private associations in the ancient Mediterranean, since papyri, unavailable from most other locations in the Mediterranean, preserve a much wider range of data than epigraphical monuments. The dossier from Egypt includes not only honorific decrees, membership lists, bylaws, dedications, and funerary monuments, but monthly accounts of expenditures and income, correspondence between guild secretaries and local officials, price and tax declarations, records of legal actions concerning associations, loan documents, petitions to local authorities about associations, letters of resignation, and many other papyrological genres. These documents provide a highly variegated picture of the governance structures and practices of associations, membership sizes and profiles, and forms of interaction with the State.

A place of untold technological wonders, home to a myriad humanoid races, and world of some of the most beloved science fiction stories ever written! The human, Louis Wu; the puppeteer known as the Hindmost; Acolyte, son of the Kzin called Chmeee . . . legendary beings brought together once again in the defense of the Ringworld. Something is going on with the Protectors. Incoming spacecraft are being destroyed before they can reach the Ringworld. Vampires are massing. And the Ghouls have their own agenda—if anyone dares approach them to learn. Each race on the Ringworld has always had its own Protector. Now it looks as if the Ringworld itself needs a Protector. But who will sit on the Ringworld Throne? “Niven’s work has been an intriguing and consistent universe, and this book is the keystone of the arch. . . . [His] technique is wonderfully polished, his characters and their situations are nicely drawn . . . wraps up (maybe) a corner of a very interesting universe.”—San Diego Union-Tribune

Book excerpt: The period of Egyptian history from its rule by the Macedonian Ptolemaic dynasty to its incorporation into the Roman and Byzantine empires has left a wealth of evidence for the lives of ordinary men and women. Texts (often personal letters) written on papyrus and other materials, objects of everyday use and funerary portraits have survived from the Graeco-Roman period of Egyptian history. But much of this unparalleled resource has been available only to specialists because of the difficulty of reading and interpreting it. Now eleven leading scholars in this field have collaborated to make available to students and other non-specialists a selection of over three hundred texts translated from Greek and Egyptian, as well as more than fifty illustrations, documenting the lives of women within this society, from queens to priestesses, property-owners to slave-girls, from birth through motherhood to death. Each item is accompanied by full explanatory notes and bibliographical references.

When Shelta is injured in battle, she travels to Asgard to save her unborn child. In return, the gods ask her to become the first world-weaver in ages: a dragon rider whose actions ripple through all of creation. Her mission: to shift the currents of destruction poisoning the multiverse of the World Tree. But combat training with Thor and riddles with Merlin can only go so far. Secretly, Shelta turns to Loki, a self-professed connoisseur of musicians, and trades her most vulnerable songs for a pair of enchanted blades that allow her to open portals and kill with a thought. Shelta doesn't want to be a vigilante, and she's no one's savior, but she'll do what it takes to protect her family from the schemes of the gods. This is the sequel to Falling Through the Weaving, completing the ROOTS AND STARS duology, which is part of the World Tree Chronicles. PRAISE FOR THE WORLD TREE CHRONICLES “A spellbinding, genre-bending delight for fans of romance and fantasy alike.” — Kat Turner "Myth and mortality tango at the crossroads of choice and chance." — Beth W. Patterson "Sweet and steamy with a dreamy vibe that will suck you in." — Elysia Lumen Strife "A vivid and lyrical adventure." — Halla Williams "This is some seriously good series writing. It's just remarkably well done. You will absolutely love it." — Tom Wacker

The swordswoman Thorn could strew a field with corpses in a moment's battle rage. Outcasts, both of them. Hunted by the farmer-priests who ruled the wasteland that once had been a world. Then Thorn in her folly got pregnant. Flower, in her folly, wanted the child. And together, foolishly, they set out to survive...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did you know that Pocahontas probably never fell in love with John Smith, as the Disney and other film versions of those events pretend? That Godzilla was originally an anti-American and anti-nuclear movie, heavily cut and supplemented with new material? That Zorro was not created by an American author but derived from the much older Mexican struggle for independence? That Anna and the King was largely invented? That the myth of the sexually eager Hula girls is based on misunderstandings by the first explorers? That Black Hawk Down and many other war movies were censored and indirectly subsidized by the Pentagon? Screening Difference takes us on a fascinating voyage through major movie blockbusters that deal with the encounter between "us," based on white Hollywood, and "them," the filmic representations of other races, ethnicities, and cultures. Looking at subtle orientations in casting and make-up, sets and props, lighting and camera movements, music and language, this lively book follows the best-known genres and subgenres: from animated cartoons to wilderness films, from romantic movies to colonial adventures. Screening Difference tracks the stories back to their origins and patiently dissects the hidden messages that have gradually crept into them.
