Book excerpt: The Wealth and Welfare of the Punjab: Being Some Studies in Punjab Rural Economics by Hubert Calvert is a fascinating look into the lives and welfare of the people in the Punjab Province while under British colonization. Calvert begins the book by expressing the complaints he worries the book will generate -- that it is a duplication of efforts, and provides no new information to the reader -- however, Calvert is quick to argue that this book is important if only for its capacity to remind the reader of previously learned information, thereby keeping those issues relevant and in the forefront of the public consciousness. As a result, this book is well suited for readers who have yet to learn about this particular topic as well as those who already posses substantial knowledge on the topic but want to re-engage the material on a new level. The book is quick to circumvent talk of culture or religion and dives directly into the topics of economics and public welfare. Poverty, in particular, is a subject that plagues the people of the Punjab and thus Calvert devotes much of the first half of his book discussing this critical issue. Making a point to emphasize the importance of the reader's understand of the plight of the Punjab people, Calvert does not sugar-coat the struggle of these people, filling the work with gritty descriptions and compelling personal stories. But Calvert isn't only concerned with the problem. While he tries to express the reasons why the economy of Punjab is struggling and people of Punjab are impoverished, he inadvertently suggests remedies to these problems intended to inspire and motivate the reader to action. The Wealth and Welfare of the Punjab: Being Some Studies in Punjab Rural Economics is a great resource for the novice historian and sociologist. This book offers an interesting look at the Punjab society and the incredible impact of British colonization in the area. Striking the delicate balance between education and advocacy, Calvert presents a fundamental issue impacting the Punjab region in India and compels his reader to make a difference. Book excerpt: This book examines economic reform in the Punjab in the period 1900-47 in an attempt to historicise theories of institutional change and community development. It advances the economic history of the region by analysing microeconomic reform in the province. A close examination of programmes of rural reconstruction in colonial Punjab reveals stark parallels with more contemporary prescriptions of development economics. Simultaneously, a study of the trajectory of legislative change sheds light on the institutional legacies of colonial rule. It engages deeply with the theoretical scholarship on development and rural uplift that emerges in this period and develops an intellectual genealogy that links colonialism to development studies. It questions the continued valorisation of the 'community' despite a lack of supportive evidence and argues that one reason for the continued popularity of ideas of community development and institutional malaise is that both absolve the status quo from blame.

Against the background of the history of the Punjab, the volume surveys the changing pattern of human settlements in the region until the fifteenth century and the emergence of the Punjabi language as the basis of regional articulation. Subsequent chapters explore the life and beliefs of Guru Nanak, the development of his ideas by his successors and the growth of his following. The book offers a comprehensive statement on one of the largest and most important communities in India today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the economic reforms of the 1990s, India’s economy has grown rapidly. To sustain growth and foreign investment over the long run requires a well-developed legal infrastructure for conducting business, including cheap and reliable contract enforcement and secure property rights. But it’s widely acknowledged that India’s legal infrastructure is in urgent need of reform, plagued by problems, including slow enforcement of contracts and land laws that differ from state to state. How has this situation arisen, and what can boost business confidence and encourage long-run economic growth? Tirthankar Roy and Anand V. Swamy trace the beginnings of the current Indian legal system to the years of British colonial rule. They show how India inherited an elaborate legal system from the British colonial administration, which incorporated elements from both British Common Law and indigenous institutions. In the case of property law, especially as it applied to agricultural land, indigenous laws and local political expediency were more influential in law-making than concepts borrowed from European legal theory. Conversely, with commercial law, there was considerable borrowing from Europe. In all cases, the British struggled with limited capacity to enforce their laws and an insufficient knowledge of the enormous diversity and differentiation within Indian society. A disorderly body of laws, not conducive to production and trade, evolved over time. Roy and Swamy’s careful analysis not only sheds new light on the development of legal institutions in India, but also offers insights for India and other emerging countries through a look at what fosters the types of institutions that are key to economic growth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groundbreaking analysis of how colonialism created new conceptual categories and spatial forms that reshaped rural societies. This book examines how, over colonial times, the diverse practices and customs of an existing rural universe—with its many forms of livelihood—were reshaped to create a new agrarian world of settled farming. While focusing on Punjab, India, this pathbreaking analysis offers a broad argument about the workings of colonial power: the fantasy of imperialism, it says, is to make the universe afresh. Such radical change, Neeladri Bhattacharya shows, is as much conceptual as material. Agrarian colonization was a process of creating spaces that conformed to the demands of colonial rule. It entailed establishing a regime of categories—tenancies, tenures, properties, habitations—and a framework of laws that made the change possible. Agrarian colonization was in this sense a deep conquest. Colonialism, the book suggests, has the power to revisualize and reorder social relations and bonds of community. It alters the world radically, even when it seeks to preserve elements of the old. The changes it brings about are simultaneously cultural, discursive, legal, linguistic, spatial, social, and economic. Moving from intent to action, concepts to practices, legal enactments to court battles, official discourses to folklore, this book explores the conflicted and dialogic nature of a transformative process. By analyzing this great conquest, and the often silent ways in which it unfolds, the book asks every historian to rethink the practice of writing agrarian history and reflect on the larger issues of doing history. “The Great Agrarian Conquest is a subtle and substantial work of scholarship. If there is one book Indians need to read to understand how colonialism actually worked (or did not work), this is it.” — Ramachandra Guha, in The Wire, in praise of the Indian edition
