Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Way to Victory, Vol. 2 of 2 Looking back upon the last phase of the war, with more detachment of mind than was possible to me or to any man in the actual tumult of it, certain aspects of the military and moral situation of the armies in conflict, and of the Armistice which followed the German surrender, stand out in clearer detail through the dust and smoke and slaughter on the battlefields. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Way to Victory, Vol. 1 of 2 In my last book of collected dispatches - "From Bapaume to Passchendaele" - I dealt first with the German retreat after the Somme battles to the shelter of their Hindenburg line; then with the Arras battles which began with a striking victory and petered out into minor actions when our troops, with grim perseverance and no light losses, continued to hold German divisions so that the French might strike more freely elsewhere; and, in the third part, with the battles in Flanders - those muddy, bloody battles of last year - ending with the capture of the ridges. All that fighting, so heroic, so costly, so disappointing as it seemed in its immediate and apparent results when in March and April of this year, 1918, the enemy came sprawling back over all the ground we had gained, must be remembered in order to understand the happenings that followed - the incomplete success of the Cambrai adventure in November, the great retreat in March, the arrival of the Germans on the Marne with their dreadful threat to Paris, and the strategy of the French Generalissimo, the fine genius of Foch, so patient in his waiting for the moment to strike back, so terrific when he struck, leading up to the glorious recovery and victories of the British armies in August and September. For in war as in normal life there are no isolated facts. Nothing happens that is not the direct consequence of previous events and conditions, and that does not lead like a chain of fate to results that follow by inevitable laws. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For film and history buffs alike, this is the engrossing story of Hollywood's involvement in World War II, as it's never before been told. Part of the Turner Classic Movies Library. Remember a time when all of Hollywood--with the expressed encouragement and investment of the government--joined forces to defend the American way of life? It was World War II and the gravest threat faced the nation, and the world at large. Hollywood answered the call to action. This is the riveting tale of how the film industry enlisted in the Allied effort during the second World War--a story that started with staunch isolationism as studios sought to maintain the European market and eventually erupted into impassioned support in countless ways. Industry output included war films depicting battles and reminding moviegoers what they were fighting for, "home-front" stories designed to boost the morale of troops overseas, and even musicals and comedies that did their bit by promoting the Good Neighbor Policy with American allies to the south. Stars like Carole Lombard--who lost her life returning from a war bond-selling tour--Bob Hope, and Marlene Dietrich enthusiastically joined USO performances and risked their own health and safety by entertaining troops near battlefronts; others like James Stewart and Clark Gable joined the fight themselves in uniform; Bette Davis and John Garfield created a starry haven for soldiers in their founding of the Hollywood Canteen. Filmmakers Orson Welles, Walt Disney, Alfred Hitchcock, and others took breaks from thriving careers to make films aiming to shore up alliances, boost recruitment, and let the folks back home know what beloved family members were facing overseas. Through it all, a story of once-in-a-century unity--of a collective need to stand up for humanity, even if it means risking everything--comes to life in this engrossing, photo-filled tale of Hollywood Victory.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Memoirs, Vol. 2 England hoped to overwhelm our country with the Russian steam-roller, whilst the Franco-Anglo-Belgian army brought ours to a standstill, and intended then to stop the war if the danger arose of the Russians winning too big a victory. The enemy assumed that Italy's secession would upset our calculations and cancel our numerical superiority in the west during the decisive weeks. The enemy's well-founded hopes of victory were disappointed by the way in which our military machine did its work and the speed with which we seized Belgium. The Russian masses did what could be expected of them. But they had the misfortune soon to stumble across great generals, who, favoured by the luck of battle, brought out by magnificent man uvres the best qualities of our nation in arms. The Schlieffen plan of attacking France through Belgium was intended to stave off from Germany the first vital danger. Book excerpt: On a summer's day, Ellen returns to the coastal town she grew up in: Victory Point. Revisiting old haunts and people from her past, she feels increasingly disconnected from her previous life, and exhausted by her constant struggle to forge a path ahead. Exploring the town, Ellen searches for some comfort in her own history that could give her the strength to move forward in her own life. Victory Point explores the concept of how we live and choose to be remembered, asking whether we should strive for a higher calling, or if a simple, domestic legacy is the most honest and admirable achievement we can hope for. Set in a town that is itself an architectural experiment, this graphic novel is a poignant and heartfelt search for meaning in life.

Book excerpt: After the success at Normandy, the Allied commanders are confident that the war in Europe will soon be over. But in December 1944, in the Ardennes Forest, the Germans launch a ruthless counteroffensive that begins the Battle of the Bulge. The Führer will spare nothing to preserve his twisted vision of a “Thousand Year Reich,” but stout American resistance defeats the German thrust. No Less Than Victory is a riveting account presented through the eyes of Eisenhower, Patton, and the soldiers who struggled face-to-face with their enemy, as well as from the vantage point of Germany’s old soldier, Gerd von Rundstedt, and Hitler’s golden boy, Albert Speer. Jeff Shaara carries the reader on a journey that defines the spirit of the soldier and the horror of a madman’s dreams.
