Book excerpt: William Meade Dame's 'From the Rapidan to Richmond and the Spottsylvania Campaign' is a personal account of a soldier's experience during the American Civil War. Dame offers a vivid description of camp life and recreations, Confederate rations, and Lee's leadership that inspired soldiers. The book also provides first-hand narratives of battles including the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House, and the defense of Richmond. A must-read for those interested in the Civil War, especially the Confederate perspective, as seen from the eyes of a soldier in service.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third installment of this award-winning Civil War series offers a vivid and authoritative chronicle of Meade and Lee’s conflict after Gettysburg. The Eastern Theater of the Civil War during the late summer and fall of 1863 was anything but inconsequential. Generals George Meade and Robert E. Lee clashed in cavalry actions and pitched battles that proved that the war in Virginia was far decided at Gettysburg. Drawing on official reports, regimental histories, letters, newspapers, and other archival sources, Jeffrey Wm Hunt sheds much-needed light on this significant period in Meade and Lee at Rappahannock Station. After Gettysburg, the Richmond War Department sent James Longstreet and two divisions from Lee’s army to reinforce Braxton Bragg’s Army of Tennessee. Washington followed suit by sending two of Meade’s corps to reinforce William Rosecrans’ Army of the Cumberland. Despite his weakened state, Lee launched a daring offensive that drove Meade back but ended in a bloody defeat at Bristoe Station on October 14th. What happened next is the subject of Meade and Lee at Rappahannock Station, a fast-paced and dynamic account of Lee’s bold strategy to hold the Rappahannock River line. Hunt provides a day-by-day, and sometimes minute-by-minute, account of the Union army’s first post-Gettysburg offensive action and Lee’s efforts to repel it. In addition to politics, strategy, and tactics, Hunt examines the intricate command relationships, Lee’s questionable decision-making, and the courageous spirit of the fighting men.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 1863, Civil War soldiers took refuge from the dismal conditions of war and weather. They made their winter quarters in the Piedmont region of central Virginia: the Union’s Army of the Potomac in Culpeper County and the Confederacy’s Army of Northern Virginia in neighboring Orange County. For the next six months the opposing soldiers eyed each other warily across the Rapidan River. In Music Along the Rapidan James A. Davis examines the role of music in defining the social communities that emerged during this winter encampment. Music was an essential part of each soldier’s personal identity, and Davis considers how music became a means of controlling the acoustic and social cacophony of war that surrounded every soldier nearby. Music also became a touchstone for colliding communities during the encampment—the communities of enlisted men and officers or Northerners and Southerners on the one hand and the shared communities occupied by both soldier and civilian on the other. The music enabled them to define their relationships and their environment, emotionally, socially, and audibly.

War--as we then thought the vastest of all wars, not only that had been, but that could ever be--swept over it. I never knew in those days a man who had not been in the war. So, "The War" was the main subject in every discussion and it was discussed with wonderful acumen.

Also, it is to be noted that twenty-one men who served in the ranks of the Confederate Army became Bishops of the Episcopal Church after the war. Of the men who thus gathered from all the Southern land, the first raised regiments were drawn to[...]".

Book excerpt: From Gettysburg to the Rapidan: The Army of the Potomac, July, 1863, to April, 1864 is a narrative that was intended to form the first part of Vol. XII of the Scribner Campaigns of the Civil War but was necessarily excluded from the said volume by its bulk. TABLE OF CONTENTS PREFACE. CHAPTER I. General Lee retreats from Gettysburg and crosses the Potomac at Williamsport, intrenching his position to cover the crossing-General Meade follows in pursuit by his left flank-Finds Lee covered by intrenchments too strong to attack without careful examination; but his reconnoissance in force is too late to prevent the crossing-While covering Washington, Meade forces Lee to abandon the Shenandoah Valley, with its large food supplies, and to take position between the Rappahannock and the Rapidan. CHAPTER II. The movement to Centreville-Meade advances against Lee, who is forced to withdraw beyond the Rapidan. CHAPTER III. General Meade Crosses the Rapidan, expecting to surprise General Lee, and encounter his Forces in detail-The plan is frustrated by the failure of the Third Corps to unite with the Second and Sixth Corps on the morning of the second day at Robertson's Tavern-Meade Advances to Mine Run, makes dispositions to attack Lee; but finding him too strongly posted and intrenched, withdraws to his former position on the Rapidan. CHAPTER IV. The Army of the Potomac makes a Demonstration against Lee on the Rapidan to aid General Butler's proposed Attack on Richmond, but only spoils its own chance for surprising Lee in his Winter Quarters-Kilpatrick's attempt to capture Richmond, and release the prisoners of Libby and other Military Prisons.
