Book excerpt: An unsettling assessment of how - and when - war with China might break out and the consequences for the world, from bestselling author and ex-major general the late Jim Molan What are Australia's options in confronting a rising and belligerent China? For the first time in nearly 80 years, war on our doorstop is not just possible, it is likely. Former army major general and Liberal Party senator Jim Molan fought wars, reviewed intelligence, participated in government and conducted business in hotspots across the world, making him an expert in evaluating risk and reward in perilous military situations. In this sober assessment, penned just before he died, Molan examines the present and growing danger of China's rise, not just to Taiwan, Japan and other countries in the immediate region, but also to the geopolitical balance of power as it has existed since the end of World War II. He suggests what China's endgame is, how war might start, what war with China would look like and, importantly, what Australia's best interests and options are. Acknowledging the increasing awareness of possible conflict, he stresses how important it is to prepare for the right war, not the war we would prefer to fight, or the one we think might never happen. PRAISE 'The Prime Minister should read Molan's book. It is chilling but a necessary statement of the truth that the region is heading to conflict and Australia is not well prepared to defend itself' Peter Jennings, The Australian 'Should be compulsory reading for all policy makers' Peta Credlin, Daily Telegraph 'Jim Molan grabs the reader squarely by the shoulders, swivelling him/her around to re-focus on the primary threat - in the Pacific. This book is confronting, like the threat it unveils' Russell Linwood, Sabretache, journal of theMilitary Historical Society of Australia

Book excerpt: In June 1942, Japanese troops occupied the Aleutian islands of Attu and Kiska in Alaska, the first enemy occupation of US territory since the War of 1812. For the next year a bloody conflict raged that was nearly invisible to most North Americans as Canadian and American soldiers, airmen and sailors went north to hold the Japanese in check. This is the complete story of the war in the North Pacific, including details of: Japanese subs lurking off the west coast, sinking ships and shelling the coast of British Columbia; the submarine-launched airplane that bombed Oregon's forests; the surreal tale of balloon-bombs crossing the Pacific to North America. Brendan Coyle has done a magnificent job in this comprehensive review of the war on the West Coast. No other single volume has so neatly tied together the myriad stories of how the war affected people in British Columbia, California, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska. —Jim Delgado

In the early 20th century, families crowded into single rooms, children played on the streets and neighbours' doors were never locked in case you needed an escape route from the police... World War 2 changed everything. During the Blitz, men set off for work never to return and rows of houses were reduced to rubble overnight. Yet the East Enders' ability to keep calm and carry on cemented their reputation for cheerful resilience. They say Hitler killed off the bugs but, along with the slums, the Blitz destroyed a way of life. After the war families were scattered - some to estates on the edge of London, others to isolated high-rise blocks. The old East End communities were gone forever. Told by the residents themselves, The War on Our Doorstep is an eye-opening, moving and laugh-out-loud depiction of the history of London's East End and what it means to be an East Ender.

Book excerpt: India might not admit it, but should it find itself involved in a border war with China it will lose. Apart from superior military power, close coordination between the political leadership and the military and the ability to take quick decisions, China has potent anti-satellite and cyber warfare capabilities. Even more shockingly, regardless of popular opinion, India today is not even in a position to win a war against Pakistan. This has nothing to do with Pakistan's nuclear weapons. It is because while India has been focused on building military force (troops and materiel needed to wage war) Pakistan has built military power (learning how to optimally utilize its military force). In this lies the difference between losing and winning. Far from being the strong Asian power of its perception, India could find itself extremely vulnerable to the hostility of its powerful neighbors. In Dragon On Our Doorstep, Pravin Sawhney and Ghazala Wahab analyse the geopolitics of the region and the military strategies of the three Asian countries to tell us exactly why India is in this precarious position and how it can transform itself through deft strategy into a leading power.

Book excerpt: I can't understand the mentality of the Australian people. One day they are in a panic about the war and the next they want more race meetings.' - John Curtin By March 1942, the Japanese had steamrolled through Malaya, laid siege to Singapore, and bombed Darwin with the same ferocity they had dealt Pearl Harbor. Nothing could stop them. Their next step was inevitable, surely: the invasion and occupation of Australia. Meanwhile, as Australian prime minister John Curtin was battling with Winston Churchill to get troops back from overseas to defend their homeland, he was also positioning to ensure the United States would be there with us to fend off the approaching enemy. And at home, people pitched in as best they could and in any way to frustrate the invader. They all played their part, torn between 'she'll be right' and near panic. On Our Doorstep is the story of how Australia and Australians - the government, the military and the people - prepared to face this calamity, and the events that persuaded them of its probability. In the end, Japan found it had stretched itself beyond the reliability of its supply line, but had it ever intended to invade Australia?

Book excerpt: "The inside story of the Supreme Court decisions that brought true democracy to the United States Today, Earl Warren is recalled as the chief justice of a Supreme Court that introduced school desegregation and other dramatic changes to American society. In retirement, however, Warren argued that his court's greatest accomplishment was establishing the principle of "one person, one vote" in state legislative and congressional redistricting. Malapportionment, Warren recognized, subverted the will of the majority, privileging rural voters, and often business interests and whites, over others. In declaring nearly all state legislatures unconstitutional, the court oversaw a revolution that transformed the exercise of political power in the United States. On Democracy's Doorstep tells the story of this crucial--and neglected--episode. J. Douglas Smith follows lawyers, activists, and Justice Department officials as they approach the court. We see Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy pushing for radical change and idealistic lawyers in Alabama bravely defying their peers. We then watch as the justices edge toward their momentous decision. The Washington Post called the result a step "toward establishing democracy in the United States." But not everyone agreed; Smith shows that business lobbies and their political allies attempted to overturn the court by calling the first Constitutional Convention since the 1780s. Thirty-three states ratified their petition--just one short of the two-thirds required"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Devil at Our Doorstep Description: David Bego's account of Big Labor's use of intimidation and corruption in an attempt to usurp American freedoms is chronicled in this riveting new release, The Devil at Our Doorstep. The Devil at Our Doorstep, a non-fiction account by businessman David Bego, reads like a fast paced novel and describes the impact of labor unions on the economic and political landscape of America. He warns of the dangers to America's future posed by allowing greater control to these firmly-entrenched organizations and their political supporters/dependents, like President Obama, who are dedicated to elimination of the republic and the rise of socialism. Bego, an entrepreneur and business owner, experienced first-hand the intimidation, the physical threats and the character assassination labor unions will utilize to achieve their goals during his battle to protect his employees from the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). In this true-life expansion to his successful book, The Devil at My Doorstep, Bego finds his efforts to be vindicated, receives an apology and recommendation from an SEIU ally and describes the final stages of his victory against one of the largest labor unions in the world. This story is seen throughout today's headlines, as Bego champions the need for National Right-to-Work legislation, explores President Obama's recess appointments to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) and the Board's drive to achieve card check or forced unionism through regulation. It exposes the political collusion between big labor, President Obama and the liberal left, and suggests programs to restore America's future. The book also exposes the media's support or acquiescence to Big Labor. It shows the bias, fueled by the mainstream media's philosophical agreement with Big Labor, and points out their lack of coverage on labor related topics for fear of attacks against their advertisers. Mixing personal experience with business and political policy critique, Bego presents readers with the case against those who would limit the freedoms of other Americans for their own gain. Following the success of his first book, David was inundated with stories about big labor abuses, such as misuse of employee dues and intimidation from people all over the country who were tired of being bullied by Big Labor! Their riveting, and often shocking, true life stories are included, exposing the depths to which labor unions will sink to accomplish their goals. “This book is dedicated to preserving American freedoms and to the belief that all Americans must take personal responsibility and accountability for their own actions, as well as their personal growth and well-being,” says Bego. Featured on radio and television shows across the country for his dramatic story, including the Lou Dobbs show on Fox Business, Bego wrote the book to engage, educate and inspire people from all political perspectives to act for the future of America, before it is too late. The book is intended for all readers interested in business, politics, history, social or economic issues and those who are concerned about the preservation of freedom in America. Bego's blog, TheDevilatOurDoorstep.com, is regularly featured on Breitbart's BigGovernment.com, where he is a featured contributor, as well as the California Public Policy Center's UnionWatch.org and the Competitive Enterprise Institute's (CEI) website. Dave has appeared on CNN and FOX Business, and he has been interviewed on Glenn Beck's Insider Extreme by S.E. Cupp. David is a weekly regular on radio talk shows across the country such as Barry Farber, Chuck Wilder, Jayne Carroll, Zeb Bell, Pat Snyder, Lincoln Brown, Bob Harden, Joe Messina, Elise Richmond and many others.

Book excerpt: On 14 December 1995, the signing of the Dayton Peace Accords ended the separatist war in former Yugoslavia and created the State of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Twenty years on, MSF reveals how the organization spoke out about a conflict marked by ethnic cleansing, crimes against humanity, targeted assaults of humanitarian organizations and individuals, and the unfulfilled promises by the International Community. MSF claimed that mass distributions of aid were simply a ‘humanitarian alibi’ of the international community that lacked the will to take political and military measures to end the conflict. Some MSF leaders even called for an armed intervention against the Bosnian-Serb artillery bombing Sarajevo. In December 1992, MSF published a report describing the Bosnian Serb policy of ethnic cleansing. They denounced the Bosnian Serbs for hindering supplies to Srebrenica and Gorazde Muslim besieged enclaves. They raised awareness and denounced the lack of protection of the population when the enclaves came under attack in 1994 and 1995 despite being declared safe zones by the UN. In August 1995, MSF denounced a lack of access to the Serb refugees and from 2000, MSF advocated for parliamentary commissions to be set up to investigate the military and political responsibilities of the States involved in the Srebrenica crisis. This Speaking Out Case Study explores the variety of questions and dilemmas MSF faced, Among them: to what extent should MSF risk the lives of its staff in order to operate in conflict zones? Should MSF condemn obstacles set up to limit the access to the population if it meant no longer having any access at all? Should MSF denounce the fact that humanitarian aid was presented by the international political leaders as the only solution to the conflict and call for military force, an action that would lead to loss of human life?

Book excerpt: Children in the Holocaust and World War II is an extraordinary, unprecedented anthology of diaries written by children all across Nazi-occupied Europe and in England. Twenty-three young people, ages ten through eighteen, recount in vivid detail the horrors they lived through. As powerful as The Diary of Anne Frank and Zlata's Diary, children's experiences are written with an unguarded eloquence that belies their years. Some of the diarists include: a Hungarian girl, selected by Mengele to be put in a line of prisoners who were tortured and murdered; a Danish Christian boy executed by the Nazis for his partisan work; and a twelve-year-old Dutch boy who lived through the Blitzkrieg in Rotterdam. And many others. These heartbreaking stories paint a harrowing picture of a genocide that will never be forgotten, and a war that shaped many generations to follow. All of their voices and visions ennoble us all.

Book excerpt: Hero Martyr Poet The inspiring story of a remarkable life cut short. “I don’t think Hannah wanted to die for the sake of having her memory exalted in history or to prove herself equal to a romantic image she conceived for herself. Her purpose wasn’t to die. She died for her life’s purpose.” —U.S. Senator John McCain, in Why Courage Matters Hannah Senesh, poet and Israel’s national heroine, has come to be seen as a symbol of Jewish heroism. Safe in Palestine during World War II, she volunteered for a mission to help rescue fellow Jews in her native Hungary. She was captured by the Nazis, endured imprisonment and torture, and was finally executed at the age of twenty-three. Like Anne Frank, she kept a diary from the time she was thirteen. This new edition brings together not only the widely read and cherished diary, but many of Hannah’s poems and letters, memoirs written by Hannah’s mother, accounts by parachutists who accompanied Hannah on her fateful mission, and insightful material not previously published in English. Described by a fellow parachutist as a “spiritual girl guided almost by mysticism,” Hannah’s life has something of value to teach everyone. Now the subject of a feature-length documentary, Blessed Is the Match: The Life and Death of Hannah Senesh, Hannah’s words and actions will inspire people from each generation to follow their own inner voices, just as she followed hers.
