Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War and the Way Out In a speech delivered at Dublin, on September 25th, 1914, the Prime Minister expressed in the following terms his view as to what the outcome of the war ought to be: - "I should like, if I might for a moment, beyond this inquiry into causes and motives, to ask your attention and that of my fellow countrymen to the end which in this war we ought to keep in view. Forty-four years ago, at the time of the war of 1870, Mr. Gladstone used these words. He said 'The greatest triumph of our time will be the enthronement of the idea of public right as the governing idea of European politics.' Nearly fifty years have passed. Little progress it seems has yet been made towards that good and beneficent change, but it seems to me to be now at this moment as good a definition as we can have of our European policy. The idea of public right, what does it mean when translated into concrete terms? It means first and foremost the clearing of the ground by the definite repudiation of militarism as the governing factor in the relation of States, and of the future moulding of the European world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Only Way Out The story of The Only Way Out was first published as a serial in Ta! Canaan: herald, of New York. The favorable reception accorded it by the readers of that journal encouraged the author and publishers to issue it in book form. The publishers of the first edition were Anson D. F. Randolph Company, of New York, who retired from business before a second edition could be brought out and therefore the book was permitted to go out of print. Since then it has often been called for, and many persons have, according to their own testimony, derived benefit from it, and some have even declared that they have been reclaimed from a life of doubt through its influence. The present publishers, therefore, have simply obeyed a call of duty in printing a new edition. It is only right to say that the author has entirely te written the work, and has also, in some measure, recon structed the story, and believes that it has been not a little immoved both as to matter and manner. Some years have elapsed since it was first written, and the author ventures to think that added experience has enabled him to correct certain crudities that appeared in the first edition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Way Out of War: Notes on the Biology of the Subject Sociology has failed in its attempt at bring ing the subject of warfare down to satisfactory conclusion. Psychology then took up the task, as a specialist, but without practical result. The reason for this is because sociology and psychol ogy belong largely to educational conviction. Warfare as an expression of natural law cannot be examined critically excepting from its funda mentals in natural history. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER In this definitive account of the conflict, acclaimed war correspondent and bestselling author Bing West provides a practical way out of Afghanistan. Drawing on his expertise as both a combat-hardened Marine and a former assistant secretary of defense, West has written a tour de force narrative, rich with vivid characters and gritty combat, which shows the consequences when strategic theory meets tactical reality. Having embedded with dozens of frontline units over the past three years, he takes the reader on a battlefield journey from the mountains in the north to the opium fields in the south. A fighter who understands strategy, West builds the case for changing course. His conclusion is sure to provoke debate: remove most of the troops from Afghanistan, stop spending billions on the dream of a modern democracy, and insist the Afghans fight their own battles. Bing West’s book is a page-turner about brave men and cunning enemies that examines our realistic choices as a nation.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from "The War in Europe" And Its Lessons for Us: An Address While I have found receptive audiences all over the country, there is no community in which 'i would expect a more sym pathetic hearing than in this, because the distinguished gentle man who represents you\in Congress views the subject from the same standpoint that I do. Whenever a new question arises upon which the people have not expressed themselves, it is important that each individual should make known his views in order that public opinion may represent the voters generally and not a portion of the people only. The country would be fortunate if all of our public men were as candid and as courageous in taking a position as Congressman Bailey, who honors you as he is honored by you. In order that you may follow me the more easily, I shall outline in advance the address which I am to deliver to you. It naturally divides itself into three parts: first, the war as it is and its injury to neutrals; second, the false philosophy out of which the war has grown and the natural results of that false philosophy; and, third, the way out, or the road to permanent peace. The subject is presented with a view to emphasizing the lessons which this country can draw from the conflict beyond the ocean. Book excerpt: There are two ways of looking at the war: one as a journalist, the other as a theologian. The journalist tells you what happens; the theologian not only why it happens, but also what matters. If we look at this war through the eyes of a journalist or a commentator, it will he only a succession of events without any remote causes in the past, or any great purpose in the future. But if we look at the war through the eyes of God, then the war is not meaningless, though we may not presently understand its details. It may very well be a purposeful purging of the world’s evil that the world may have a rebirth of freedom under His Holy Law, for: Every human path leads on to God, He holds a myriad finer threads than gold, And strong as holy wishes, drawing us With delicate tension upward to Himself. Our approach is from the divine point of view, first of all, because it is the only explanation which fits the facts; secondly because the American people who have been confused by catchwords and slogans are seeking an inspiration for a total surrender of their great potentialities for sacrifice, both for God and country. The great mass of the American people are frankly dissatisfied with the ephemeral and superficial commentaries on what is happening. Being endowed with intelligence, they want to know why it is happening. We all know what we are fighting against; we want to know what we are fighting for. We all know that we are in a war; we want to know what we must do to make a lasting peace. We know whom we hate; but we want to know what we ought to love. We know we are fighting against a barbarism that is intrinsically wicked; we want to know what we have to do to make the resurrection of that wickedness impossible.
