Riverdale's Fall Festival is held every year by the lake. The townspeople and visitors from ALL over look forward to the festival. But this year, everyone is on edge because of rumors of a 'lake monster.' Is there a creepy creature lurking in the lake? Will the townspeople and visitors ever feel safe again to go fishing, swimming or picnicking? Will Sheriff Williker be able to solve the case of the 'lake monster' in time for Riverdale's Fall Festival? WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING -- Kim Hansen's brilliant story-line combines with beautiful illustrations to bring vibrant life to the charming forest animal characters living in the fictional quaint town of Riverdale, Iowa. "This is a fun children's picture book. Children will become engaged and want to help Sheriff Williker uncover the mystery behind the lake monster. Solving this mystery was important to Sheriff Williker for several reasons, the main one being the Riverdale Fall Festival, and it will become important to your child as well. It was fun to not only read this story, but watch Sheriff Williker navigate the solving of the mystery. This book displays a great message for the young reader that things are not always as they seem and you can't believe everything that you hear. If you're looking for a lovely children's book that will keep your child entertained, add this book to your library." -- Vernita Naylor for Readers' Favorite

Book excerpt: The lines have been drawn. On one side are young earth creationists, who assert that God created the universe in six days and-based on calculations derived from the Bible-that the earth is six thousand years old. On the other side are secular scientists, who claim the universe has existed for over thirteen billion years, the earth for 4.5 billion. Scientists claim that no miracles were necessary to form the universe, and that everything is explained by natural causes. However, young earth creationists point to verses at the beginning of the Bible and the beginning of the book of John that clearly claim that God created the universe. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. Genesis 1:1-2 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made. John 1:1-3 But what if there is no contradiction between scientific data and the Bible? Arnold Guyot was a nineteenth-century geologist and geographer at Princeton University. In addition to his numerous scientific accomplishments, he developed the day-age interpretation of Genesis 1, in which the "days" of creation represent geologic ages. When we view the Bible through this lens, we find that modern science has not only failed to refute the miracles of Genesis, but has in fact provided abundant evidence for their veracity. Genesis Revealed: A Scientific Examination of the Creation Story takes readers down the twin paths of science and theology to show that they lead us to the same destination. Citing a multitude of discoveries in astronomy and geology, Dr. Peter Waller makes a compelling case for Guyot's interpretation-and for the miracles described in Genesis 1:1-25.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shipwreck Modernity engages early modern representations of maritime disaster in order to describe the global experience of ecological crisis. In the wet chaos of catastrophe, sailors sought temporary security as their worlds were turned upside down. Similarly, writers, poets, and other thinkers searched for stability amid the cultural shifts that resulted from global expansion. The ancient master plot of shipwreck provided a literary language for their dislocation and uncertainty. Steve Mentz identifies three paradigms that expose the cultural meanings of shipwreck in historical and imaginative texts from the mid-sixteenth through the early eighteenth centuries: wet globalization, blue ecology, and shipwreck modernity. The years during which the English nation and its emerging colonies began to define themselves through oceangoing expansion were also a time when maritime disaster occupied sailors, poets, playwrights, sermon makers, and many others. Through coming to terms with shipwreck, these figures adapted to disruptive change. Traces of shipwreck ecology appear in canonical literature from Shakespeare to Donne to Defoe and also in sermons, tales of survival, amateur poetry, and the diaries of seventeenth-century English sailors. The isolated islands of Bermuda and the perils of divine anger hold central places. Modern sailor-poets including Herman Melville serve as valuable touchstones in the effort to parse the reality and understandings of global shipwreck. Offering the first ecocritical account of early modern shipwreck narratives, Shipwreck Modernity reveals the surprisingly modern truths to be found in these early stories of ecological collapse.

Book excerpt: From the master of contemporary urban fantasy, a new collection of "Newford" stories The city of Newford could be any city in North America, bursting with music, commerce, art, love, hate, and, of course magic. Magic in the sidewalk cracks, myth at the foundations of its great buildings, enchantment in the spaces between its people. In novels like Moonheart, Forests of the Heart, The Onion Girl, and The Mystery of Grace, and in a series of story collections, urban fantasy master Charles de Lint has explored that magic and those spaces, bringing to life a tapestry of people from all walks of life, each looking for a spark of the miraculous to shape their lives and transform their fate. In Muse and Reverie, the fifth of the story collections, we reencounter old friends such as Jilly, Sophie, and the Crow Girls. We breathe in intimations of the world beyond death, and of magic beyond time. Longtime readers and newcomers alike will find themselves under Charles de Lint's unique spell.
