Book excerpt: Winnipeg is divided between two worlds: one is comprised of human beings and the other of supernatural beings, some of whom have been gifted with special powers and magic. Supernatural beings, animals shaped like humans, believe their ancestors are their gods, dutifully follow the rules of their tradition, and understand their purpose is to eradicate the human race. Hero is a young adult, magician supernatural being who has been sent with his brothers to the world of human beings to destroy humankind. But everything changes during his important mission when Hero surprisingly feels his magic pushing him against his own desire to protect Angel, a mysterious human being who appears different than others in her race. When Hero breaks the rules of his tradition and battles against his own family to protect Angel, he becomes a traitor who now must learn why his magic warns him when Angel is in danger as fate leads him to places he never imagined. In this fantasy tale, a young supernatural being with magical powers on a mission to destroy the human race crosses paths with a mysterious being that causes him to question everything he has ever known.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mr. Anthony Hope is finding out his enviable position. Do what he will, he has the power to please most people. Whatever be his moods, and whatever the quality of his performance, he is never awkward, and elegance of form in any literary matter popularly interesting is so uncommon that gratitude and admiration are widespread and intense in proportion. Now that he is finding this out, it is not surprising that he should take advantage of it, and give pleasure to his numerous admirers as frequently and with as little trouble to himself as possible. It is impertinent to pry into the state of Mr. Hope's soul to see if it is growing demoralised by easy triumphs, but it is quite justifiable to say that a little more effort than is to be found in this book is wanted to keep to the estimate which some sincere but discreet admirers have formed of his powers. The stories here are entertaining, and the youth of fourteen who should disapprove of them would do so from mere dulness. But there are features in it that would lead one to believe they were not written for lads in their early teens. Yet it is not exactly a book for men and women, to whom the tales, excellent in imagining as many of them are, must be spoilt by the artificiality of the mechanism, and the conventionality of all the motives, feelings, and expressions, of the human beings concerned. Mr. Hope is a novelist of power, and he gives us an unimpeachable gift-book of a quality equalled by a dozen boys' story writers any Christmas. His Antonio he calls an outlaw ; but he is the outlaw of a maiden-aunt's or a schoolmaster's imagination—compounded of demi-god and family pastor. True, he appears to us through the narrative of a holy father, but Mr. Hope chose that medium, and if it was unsuitable for the rough record of the wild men who took to the hills, he is responsible.

Book excerpt: Joyce Carol Oates has performed a full review of her acclaimed 1992 anthology, The Oxford Book of American Short Stories, and in this second edition embraces those authors who have come to define turn-of-the-century American literature. Jhumpa Lahiri, Junot Diaz, Richard Ford, and David Foster Wallace are just a few of the authors whose stories are now represented. Each story is accompanied by a brief introduction, and there is also a fascinating introductory essay by Joyce Carol Oates that explains why these stories form the foundation of the American literary canon, and the trends and innovations that have taken place in the last twenty years.

Book excerpt: The Palliser novels are six novels, also known as the "Parliamentary Novels", by Anthony Trollope. The common thread is the wealthy aristocrat and politician Plantagenet Palliser and (in all but the last book) his wife Lady Glencora. The plots involve British and Irish politics in varying degrees, specifically in and around Parliament. Plantagenet Palliser is a main character in the Palliser novels. First introduced as a minor character in The Small House at Allington, one of the Barsetshire novels, Palliser is the heir presumptive to the dukedom of Omnium. Palliser is a quiet, hardworking, conscientious man whose chief ambition in life is to become Chancellor of the Exchequer. After an unwise flirtation with the married Lady Dumbello (daughter of Dr. Grantly and granddaughter of the Reverend Mr Harding from The Warden and Barchester Towers), he agrees to an arranged marriage with the great heiress of the day, the free-spirited, spontaneous Lady Glencora M'Cluskie._x000D_ Table of Contents:_x000D_ Can You Forgive Her?_x000D_ Phineas Finn_x000D_ The Eustace Diamonds_x000D_ Phineas Redux_x000D_ The Prime Minister_x000D_ The Duke's Children_x000D_ Anthony Trollope (1815-1882) was one of the most successful, prolific and respected English novelists of the Victorian era. Some of his best-loved works, collectively known as the Chronicles of Barsetshire, revolve around the imaginary county of Barsetshire. He also wrote perceptive novels on political, social, and gender issues, and on other topical matters. Trollope's literary reputation dipped somewhat during the last years of his life, but he regained the esteem of critics by the mid-twentieth century.
