Book Synopsis Early American Wooden Ware & Other Kitchen Utensils by : Mary Earle Gould
Download or read book Early American Wooden Ware & Other Kitchen Utensils written by Mary Earle Gould and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-05 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authoritative and comprehensive history of wooden ware, including old New England kitchens, pantry tools, bowls, plates, mortars, buckets, tubs, the early uses of paint, means of identification, and much more. “It would be hard to say how and where the material for this book was gathered. From my childhood I have been interested in early manners, customs, and sayings, and have retained as I have learned. It was natural, then, that wherever I went as a collector I questioned and listened, and no chance remarks slipped by unheeded. A notebook went with me and I began to keep a diary of the happenings of the days.... “With many happy memories of places I have visited, of acquaintances I have made, of hospitality shown me by those of an older generation and of interesting correspondence with all parts of the United States, I have written my book. “This enlarged edition has been made possible by more research work and by helpful correspondence from those interested in recording this early history. A few more pieces of wooden ware have come to the museum which now numbers over 1,000 pieces, including the iron fireplace utensils.”—Mary Earle Gould

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban Crisis, Urban Hope recognises that our cities are in crisis. It resurrects the concept of the city and its neighbourhoods as a crucible for new ideas and a site of innovative action, recognising the desperate need for support, resources and complementary visions at urban and national scales. The collection of essays brings together leading thinkers and doers from across the spectrum of policy and practice to present both critical analysis and an agenda for action, showing how government and public services not only can be agents of hope, but must be if our cities are to thrive.

Book Synopsis Community Food Initiatives by : Oona Morrow
Download or read book Community Food Initiatives written by Oona Morrow and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-22 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines a diverse range of community food initiatives in light of their everyday practices, innovations, and contestations. While community food initiatives aim to tackle issues like food security, food waste, or food poverty, it is a cause for concern for many when they are framed as the next big "solution" to the problems of the current industrialised food system. They have been critiqued for being too neoliberal, elitist, and localist; for not challenging structural inequalities (e.g. racism, privilege, exclusion, colonialism, capitalism); and for reproducing these inequalities within their own contexts. This edited volume examines the everyday realities of community food initiatives, focusing on both their hopes and their troubles, their limitations and failures, but also their best intentions, missions, and models, alongside their capacity to create hope in difficult times. The stories presented in this book are grounded in contemporary theoretical debates on neoliberalism, diverse economies, food justice, community and inclusion, and social innovation, and help to sharpen these as conceptual tools for interrogating community food initiatives as sites of both hope and trouble. The novelty of this volume is its focus on the everyday doings of these initiatives in particular places and contexts, with different constraints and opportunities. This grounded, relational, and place-based approach allows us to move beyond more traditional framings in which community food initiatives are either applauded for their potential or criticized for their limitations. It enables researchers and practitioners to explore how community food initiatives can realize their potential for creating alternative food futures and generates innovative pathways for theorising the mutual interplay of food production and consumption. This volume will be of great interest to students and scholars of critical food studies, food security, public health, and nutrition as well as human geographers, sociologists, and anthropologists with an interest in food.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have learned to notice the splendour of life even in the slimiest of creatures. I have found beauty in what I used to perceive as ugly. Slowly I have learned to love that which is difficult to love, both in myself and in others. Florencia Clifford is a zen cook. In this evocative and powerful book, we move seamlessly from Buddhist retreats in an isolated farmhouse in mid-Wales, to the hills of Florencia's childhood in Argentina, and back again. She describes her experiences in sensual detail: the subtle and magical shifts in herself, the seasons, and the people around her. Along the way, she shares her insights and many delicious vegetarian recipes. This is a journey of cooking and healing, taking us into a deep and luminous understanding of the food she prepares, and of the world around us. It tells of the growth of love, as the author learns to care for all beings, including the slugs in the title. This book features twenty original illustrations by artist Michaela Meadow.
