Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Zealand’s first Anglican bishop, George Selwyn, was a towering figure in the young colony. Denounced as a ‘turbulent priest’ for speaking out against Crown practices that dispossessed Māori, he brought a vigorous approach to Episcopal leadership. His wife Sarah Selwyn supported all her husband’s activities, in a life characterised as one of ‘hardship and anxiety’. She expressed independently her sense of outrage over the Waitara dispute. Selwyn promoted participatory church government, founded the innovative Melanesian Mission, and developed a distinctive style of colonial church architecture. More controversially, he battled with the Church Missionary Society, and was caught up in the bitter maelstrom of settler and Māori politics. His personal links with colonial and ecclesiastical networks gave him access to the heart of empire. These essays offer new insights into Selwyn’s role in developing pan-Anglicanism, strengthening links between the Church of England and the Episcopal and Anglican Churches in North America, and his time as Bishop of Lichfield (1868–78). His place in Treaty history, as a political commentator and a valuable source of historical information, is recognised. George Selwyn left a large imprint on New Zealand church and society. This collection both honours and critiques a controversial bishop. Contributors include Ken Booth, Judith Bright, Terry M. Brown, Janet E. Crawford, Bruce Kaye, Warren E. Limbrick, Jonathan Mane-Wheoki, Grant Phillipson, John Stenhouse and Rowan Strong.

In this volume, leading and emerging scholars, activists and those working in the public sector, archives and museums bring their expertise to provide timely direction and informed debate about the importance of history. Primarily concerned with Aotearoa (the Māori name for New Zealand), the essays within traverse local, national and global knowledge to offer new approaches that consider the ability and potential for history to ‘make a difference’ in the early twenty-first century. Authors adopt a wide range of methodological approaches, including social, cultural, Māori, oral, race relations, religious, public, political, economic, visual and material history. The chapters engage with work in postcolonial and cultural studies. The volume is divided into three sections that address the themes of challenging power and privilege, the co-production of historical knowledge and public and material histories. Collectively, the potential for dialogue across previous sub-disciplinary and public, private and professional divides is pursued.

Book excerpt: This book examines the advertising posters, town plans and geographical views that encouraged middle-class emigration to New Zealand in the 1840s. It explores how the New Zealand Company exploited visual literacy to advertise its settlement in Te Whanganui ā Tara Wellington. A tale of two towns, prospective English settlers looked to Wellington to make their homes, while Te Whanganui ā Tara was already home to numerous Māori sub-tribes. The book explores the worlds of each to ask how the images produced by the New Zealand Company were complicit in transferring Māori land into English ownership. Not seeking blame, it works instead to understand, and investigates processes of redress, offering hope for a post post-colonial future in Aotearoa New Zealand. This book will interest scholars and students of migration, visual culture and print history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Treaty of Waitangi/Te Tiriti o Waitangi is a foundational document for New Zealand. Signed in 1840 by more than 540 rangatira and representatives of the British Crown, the Treaty set out an agreement between Māori and the European newcomers that remains central to this country’s cultural and political life. Claudia Orange’s writing on the Treaty has contributed to New Zealanders’ understanding of this history for over thirty years. In this new edition of her popular illustrated history, Dr Orange brings the narrative of Te Tiriti/Treaty up to date, covering major developments in iwi claims and Treaty settlements – including the ‘personhood’ established for the Whanganui River and Te Urewera, applications for customary title in the foreshore and seabed, and critical matters of intellectual property, language and political partnership. New Zealand’s commitment to the Treaty claims process has far-reaching implications for this country’s future, and this clear account provides readers with invaluable insights into an all-important history. The Treaty of Waitangi by Claudia Orange was first published in 1987 to national acclaim, receiving the Goodman Fielder Wattie Award. This widely respected history has since advanced through several new editions. The Treaty of Waitangi/Te Tiriti o Waitangi: An Illustrated History is the most comprehensive account yet, presented in full colour and drawing on Dr Orange’s recent research into the nine sheets of the Treaty and their signatories.

Book excerpt: "On October 15th, 2007 an estimated 300 police raided houses all over Aotearoa New Zealand and arrested people based on warrants issued under the Terrorism Suppression Act. Lives were turned upside down as the police searched for evidence of 'terrorism'. This book is a collection of oral history interviews of people affected by those raids and the aftermath: defendants, friends, family, supporters and other people subject to the state's coercive powers on that day. The case is the first ever attempted use of the Terrorism Suppression Act, a piece of legislation enacted in response to the 9/11 events in New York and Washington DC. The terrorism charges were not brought, but the people arrested continue to face a long journey to freedom as the state seeks to punish political activists and to reinforce the status quo."--Publisher's description.
