Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. The Hegemony of Heritage makes an original and significant contribution to our understanding of how the relationship of architectural objects and societies to the built environment changes over time. Studying two surviving medieval monuments in southern Rajasthan—the Ambika Temple in Jagat and the Ékalingji Temple Complex in Kailaspuri—the author looks beyond their divergent sectarian affiliations and patronage structures to underscore many aspects of common practice. This book offers new and extremely valuable insights into these important monuments, illuminating the entangled politics of antiquity and revealing whether a monument’s ritual record is affirmed as continuous and hence hoary or dismissed as discontinuous or reinvented through various strategies. The Hegemony of Heritage enriches theoretical constructs with ethnographic description and asks us to reexamine notions such as archive and text through the filter of sculpture and mantra.

Book excerpt: Ancient Indonesian sculpture, as yet a relatively unexplored area of research, is discussed in this volume from various angles. The nine contributions originate from an international symposium at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Robert L. Brown formulates a set of rules that account for the way Indian art was transformed when adopted in Southeast Asian regions. Sara Schastok shows how the dating of Amaravātī style bronzes was influenced by colonial thinking. In comparing the northeast Indian and Javanese bronzes figurines, Susan L. Huntington concludes that although Javanese bronzes owe something to northeast Indian ones, each group has its own distinctive characteristics. Pauline Lunsingh Scheurleer’s contribution stresses the Javanese aspects of Javanese bronzes. Nandana Chutiwongs focuses on images of Avalokiteśvara in this manifestation as Great Compassionate Lord. A fragment of a bronze-ringed rattle leads A. de Vries Robbé to trace the development of this attribute of mendicant Buddhist monks from India, over mainland Southeast Asia, to Central and East Java. Moving to the great Buddhist monument in Central Java, the Borobudur, its structure and meaning are given a completely new interpretation by John C. Huntington. A northeast Indian iconographic model is proposed by J.A. Schoterman for the famous images of Amoghapāśa Lokeśvara and his retinue in the East Javanese temple Candi Jago. Finally, Marijke J. Klokke offers a new interpretation of the iconography of the East Javanese ‘portrait statues’.

Book excerpt: Illustrations: Numerous B/w Illustrations Description: Horse has been one of the noblest animals whose use came quite handy to man at very early age. For its nobility, energy and power horse was very soon universally acknowledged for the progress of human civilization. In its tremendous energy and power, man discovered something unusual and something divine and as such all over the ancient world some sort of divine flavour came to be attached to it by countries evolving different civilizations. The usefulness of this animal was also felt by our ancestors who attributed it to a high position and allowed the same to be symbolic theriomorphically of some of their very important gods and goddesses. Religious recognition which the horse received from the early Indians had also inspired Indian artists to compose meaningful and fascinating themes in stone, terracotta and in colour with horse as the pivotal character. Only a few books and articles have so far been written on animals in Indian art and in each case the studies have been very summarily undertaken. The present work for the first time studies exhaustively a single animal viz., the horse. Various aspects of horse including its history, its place and position in Indian mythology and its depictions in early Indian art have been dealt with utter devotion and affectionate sympathy.
