Book excerpt: Woolf originally began work on "The Voyage Out" in 1910 and had finished an early draft by 1912. Yet the novel had a long and difficult gestation and was not published until 1915. It was written during a period in which Woolf was especially psychologically vulnerable. She suffered from periods of depression and at one point attempted suicide. The resultant work contained the seeds of all that would blossom in her later work: the innovative narrative style, the focus on feminine consciousness, sexuality and death. Virginia Woolf (1882–1941) was an English writer, and one of the foremost modernists of the twentieth century. During the interwar period, Woolf was a significant figure in London literary society and a central figure in the influential Bloomsbury Group of intellectuals. Her most famous works include the novels Mrs Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927) and Orlando (1928), and the book-length essay A Room of One's Own (1929), with its famous dictum, "A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction."

An ocean cruise with her father leaves her for the summer at her Aunt’s villa in an unnamed South American country, where she meets the English inhabitants of the local town’s hotel. As the season progresses she starts to become entangled in their own lives and passions, and through those burgeoning acquaintances and friendships the discovery of her own nature grows. The Voyage Out is Virginia Woolf’s first novel and was a labour of love, taking her five years to complete. Even though heavy editing was required to reduce some of the more politically charged themes before its publication in 1915, it still bemused some contemporary critics and even garnered accusations of “reckless femininity.” Time however has proved kinder, with the book demonstrating the key points of Woolf’s future style. It even has the first appearance of Clarissa Dalloway, the titular protagonist of Woolf’s later and more famous novel Mrs. Dalloway. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: The Voyage Out (1915) is the story of a rite of passage. When Rachel Vinrace embarks for South America on her father's ship she is launched on a course of self-discovery in a modern version of the mythic voyage. Virginia Woolf knew all too well the forms that she was supposed to follow when writing of a young lady's entrance into the world, and she struggled to subvert the conventions, wittily and assiduously, rewriting and revising the novel many times. The finished work is not, on the face of it, a `portrait of the artist'. However, through The Voyage Out readers will discover Woolf as an emerging and original artist: not identified with the heroine, but present everywhere in the social satire and the lyricism and patterning of consciousness. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. It takes Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose and their niece, Rachel, on a sea voyage from London to a resort on the South american coast. "It is a strange, tragic, inspired book whose scene is a South americanca not found on any map and reached by a boat which would not float on any sea, an americanca whose spiritual boundaries touch Xanadu and Atlantis" (E. M. Forster).

Book excerpt: First published in England 1915, and following nearly a decade of composition, "The Voyage Out" is Virginia Woolf's first novel. Rachel Vinrace, the woman at the center of this beautiful and original story, is an intelligent, yet innocent, young English girl who embarks on a sea voyage to South America with distant relatives. Although she is far from the drawing rooms and theaters of London, she comes to learn of the worlds of politics and sex, love and marriage. Her journey takes a delicious turn when she meets -- and falls passionately for -- Terence Hewet, a man she meets in the Brazilian coastal town of Santa Marina. But it is in tragedy that this novel, poignant in its emotions, yet uncompromising in its vision, ultimately ends.

In 1981, Louise DeSalvo published an alternate version of The Voyage Out featuring its original title, Melymbrosia.[4] Professor DeSalvo worked for seven years on the project of reconstructing the text of the novel as it might have appeared in 1912, before Woolf had begun serious revisions. She reviewed more than 1,000 manuscript pages from Woolf's private papers, dating the earlier versions of the work by small organizational clues such as the color of ink used or noticing where a pen had last left off writing.

Book excerpt: The Voyage Out By Virginia Woolf Classic Literature The Voyage Out is the first novel by Virginia Woolf (1882 - 1941), published in 1915 by Duckworth; and published in the US in 1920 by Doran. Rachel Vinrace embarks for South America on her father's ship and is launched on a course of self-discovery in a kind of modern mythical voyage. The mismatched jumble of passengers provide Woolf with an opportunity to satirise Edwardian life. The novel introduces Clarissa Dalloway, the central character of Woolf's later novel, Mrs. Dalloway. Two of the other characters were modelled after important figures in Woolf's life. St John Hirst is a fictional portrayal of Lytton Strachey and Helen Ambrose is to some extent inspired by Woolf's sister, Vanessa Bell. And Rachel's journey from a cloistered life in a London suburb to freedom, challenging intellectual discourse and discovery very likely reflects Woolf's own journey from a repressive household to the intellectual stimulation of the Bloomsbury Group. Writing in 1926, E. M. Forster described it as "... a strange, tragic, inspired book whose scene is a South America not found on any map and reached by a boat which would not float on any sea, an America whose spiritual boundaries touch Xanadu and Atlantis" And, reviewing the book a decade earlier, he wrote this: "It is absolutely unafraid... Here at last is a book which attains unity as surely as Wuthering Heights, though by a different path." Literary scholar Phyllis Rose writes in her introduction to the novel, "No later novel of Woolf's will capture so brilliantly the excitement of youth." And also the excitement and challenge of life. "It's not cowardly to wish to live," says one old man at the end of the book. "It's the very reverse of cowardly. Personally, I'd like to go on for a hundred years... Think of all the things that are bound to happen!"

Book excerpt: It is hard to believe that "The Voyage Out" was Virginia Woolf's first novel, begun in the early 1900s but not published until 1915, having been rewritten several times. It is a grand story, almost epic in scope, of a young woman's inner voyage of discovery. In "The Voyage Out" are all the trademarks of Woolf's writing that were to come - her poetic lyricism, her social satire, and her experimentation with point of view and character. "The Voyage Out" follows the inexperienced Rachel Vinrace as she travels from England to South America on her father's ship with her aunt and uncle. Instead of traveling on with her father, Rachel chooses to reside with Helen, her aunt, in the fictional town of Santa Marina so that her aunt can teach her about life. Once there, their lives become entwined with the residents of the local hotel, a random assortment of scholars and wealthy vacationers. With these newly found friendships Rachel is finally able to explore feelings she has never experienced and try to discover who she is and who she wants to be. Woolf's writing in "The Voyage Out" is much more mature and established than one would expect for a first novel, but it is not without fault. the central story, that of the blossoming relationship between Rachel and Terence Hewet, offers a classic modern depiction of two souls struggling to find their place in this world and to discover what it truly means to love. Woolf's portrait of Rachel is not a self-portrait, although the character does share some of the same life experiences. Woolf shines through her writing in the satirical elements and in the beautiful way that she can explore some of the hardest to capture feelings of love and loss. "The Voyage Out" is a truly remarkable achievement as a first novel and one that definitely reaffirms Woolf's reputation as one of the finest writers of the modern era, or perhaps of any era.
