Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Voice, Its Physiology and Cultivation I AM aware that the comprehensive title of this work appears to be out of proportion to the small number of its pages. It has been my intention to put before the reader, in as few words as possible, a distinct outline of the vocal instruments, with the object of bringing the scientific and practical aspects of the voice into closer relation. If I should be so fortunate as to supply those, to whom the cultivation of the voice is a matter of importance, with materials to facilitate their work, and at the same time to indicate a line of scientific research to those who are in a position to pursue it, my object will. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Music: As Applied to the Teaching and Practice of Voice and Instruments This Work is not so much intended for self-instruction, as to provide a systematized course by which teachers may assist their pupils toward that general knowledge which is neces sary to the true musician. The keen competi tion in the musical branches at present, is gradually leading the musician to become merely a specialist; to counteract this, a study Of those principles which underlie all music, such as the laws of Acoustics, musical form, etc., are most necessary, and this little volume is intended to become a text-book Of such studies. It naturally gives but an outline, the details Of which are to be filled in by the teacher. In the matter Of Acoustics, only those facts which are Of the utmost importance to the musician are stated, and no attempt is made to touch upon all the ramifications Of the interest ing subject. It is as ameans therefore, not as an end, that I hope this work may be accepted by musician and public. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Voice Production and Analysis Thousands of persons whose voices naturally are pleasant, sweet, acceptable, find, as the result of train ing, of learning to sing, that their voices are ruined. The result of their efforts is ability to perform all sorts of vocal gymnastics. They have the trill and tremolo and arpeggio and many other accomplishments. Their singing, however, has no heart, no soul. The voice is merely the wreck of its former self, and the vocal organs are irreparably damaged. This result of the present methods of voice-culture is all the more remarkable when it is remembered that other physical training, if properly conducted, does not injure the bodily organs. Any one by gymnastics can be made a better athlete than he is naturally. A person who is taught to play the piano may not always develop into an artist. The muscular exercise required by such training does not, however, result in cramped fingers or in loss of sensation. Why, then, do the present meth ods of instruction in vocal music result so frequently in irretrievable injury to the voice and vocal organs To answer this question, not empirically, but scientifically, is the purpose of this series of articles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Improving the Voice and Ear: And of Increasing Their Musical Powers, on Philosophical Principles; Adapted to Public Speakers, Musicians, and Actors, and Particularly Useful for the Instructors of Youth It must he confessed, that between such instru ments and the voice, there is no very evident re semblance; for though the sound of the voice is produced by the vibration of air in the tube of the wind-pipe, yet there is nothing analogous to the mouth-piece of the instrument, and the sound does not apparently depend much on the physical nature of the substance of the throat. The substances, indeed, composing the wind-pipe and the parts about the throat, are too soft and inelastic to rank as sonorous bodies. This instrument, by laying bare the interior of the larynx, shows how the glottis proceeds to produce sounds and registers. It shows, also, the manner in which the ringing and veiled qualities are communicated to the voice. These qualities - produced by the glottis-are distinct from the characteristics of the voice called timbres, and are originated in the pharynx by quite another mechanism. All this should dispel many false' ideas afloat on the question of voice production. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Use of the Voice Professor J. Adams tells us that All education is in the last resort self-education. The great masters have always taught this truth, and latterly Madame Montessori has brought it more insistently before us. It is hoped that the following pages will. Help, as far as the use of the voice is concerned, those who are seeking' direction along the path of true self education. But any who think that they will} be able to read the book at a sitting or two and then lay it aside altogether and derive much benefit from it must be doomed to disappointment. Practice must be regular and pleasurable. An endeavour has been made to point out the main principles which both child and adult should observe when using the voice. The point of View of the adult, however, is predominant throughout. Especially is it hoped that some slight help may be given to those whose life-work is the Christian ministry and to those who teach in schools. The methods advocated throughout the book are the results of the writer's own experience. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Accuracy of the Voice in Simple Pitch Singing The tonoscope has been criticised as giving only an approximate result, because the pitch of the singing voice is not uniform and it is therefore necessary in reading the instrument to select the pre dominating pitch. This criticism stands or falls according to the needs of the problem to be attacked. If one were studying the oscillations of the voice, or the variations of the individual sections of a tone, as for example the difference in pitch between the first tenth and the fifth tenth of a second of a tone, it would be better to use a graphic method. But even in such problems as these the tonoscope is not without its possibilities. The characteristics of tonal attack in singing are easily discernible in the configurations on the screen. With many of the problems which lie in our field there is no need for so detailed a record. The predominant or modal pitch of a tone of from one to two seconds in length is all that is needed for much of the work in the psychology of pitch singing. The tonoscope can of course meet this condition admir ably, as it is this modal pitch which stands out clear and distinct, forcing itself upon the attention of the experimenter.
