Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Vitality of Buried Seeds So much has already been written on the germination of seeds that have remained dormant in the'soil for a number of years, in some cases even for centuries, that it Seemed desirable to determine with some degree of accuracy the length of time that certain seeds will retain their vitality when buried in the soil under known conditions. Accordingly, in the autumn of 1902, 112 different samples of seeds were selected for these expe-riments, as follows: . Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Struggle--of both the small and staggering sort--is woven throughout all our lives. It can erode our faith, strip us of hope, rob us of joy, extinguish our vitality, and diminish our capacity to love. But because God is always present and at work, seeds of redemption lie as hidden treasure buried in the ground of struggle. By taking a deeply human look at various figures in the lineage of Jesus in Matthew 1, Andy White shows us that the people we once may have considered unlike us because of thousands of years of separation suddenly come close in their pain, loss, and failures. He, too, comes close as a man who has faced hardships, to offer others a hand when their feet are unsteady. By digging into the lives of these biblical sojourners, White unearths hidden treasures, guides readers on a journey of self-discovery, and points the way forward, showing us ways to cultivate tenacious hope, stronger faith, and greater capacity to live and love as participants in God's ongoing redemption story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Agricultural Science, Vol. 9: 1918-19 The seeds of many species of plants have a habit of germinating in un expected places under various conditions, and the question of the vitality of seeds is one that has frequently engaged the attention of. Scientists. It has often been claimed that seeds obtained from old pyramids and sepulchres have germinated when placed in favourable circumstances, but Becquerel1 states that strict enquiry and experiment show that authentic seeds of such origin will not germinate, but that the seeds so obtained which do germinate have proved to be frauds insetted by the fellaheen for the sake of gain. Various writers (quoted bv Becquerel) have claimed the power of germination for seeds buried for very long periods. Michelet elaimed that seeds of Galimn nlicum, buried 3000 years ago in the valley of Doubs, had retained their power of growth; von Held reich, that Glrmcium Serpieri from land covered by excavated scoriae 1500 years ago, was still viable; much doubt, however, has been thrown on the authenticity of such seeds. Information of this kind is of comparatively little value as evidence, as there is no definite proof of the time at which the seed actually reached its position or of the way in which it was transported. More satisfactory evidence has been obtained by the attempted germination of seeds of known age by various observers. Becquerel quotes experiments in which 500 species of seeds were sown, some of which were nearly 200 years old. Only four families gave any germination, Leguminosae, Nelumbifweae, Malvaceae, Labiatae. Cuminosae. 18 species germinated out of 90 sown. Ages 28-87 years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Grows to a height of from 2 to 18 inches. The smaller plants have a single stem with few branches. The larger are branched and bushy. The leaves are somewhat elongated, are about ll inches long and set right on the stem without a stalk. The blossoms are very small, are white and.have four petals and for sepals, they are in clusters which are extensions of the main stem or of the lateral branches, and each one is attached to the stem by a little stalk of its own. The flowers at the lower part come out first, and the pods may be almost ripe while the upper part is still in bloom. The distinguishing features are its dis agreeable smell and, its peculiarly shaped pod. The pod is of a light green color, flat, from 1 to 1} inch broad, heart shaped and deeply indented at the top. It has two cells, and each cell contains from {our to eight seeds. The seed is similar to, though much smaller than that of cauli flower. Plants growing when winter comes on will retain their vitality and produce and shed their seed very early, and these seeds will often repro duce twice in the same season. The seed being small will not germinate unless very near the surface, and when buried below the germinating point will retain its vitality for many years. The milk produced by cows which have access to Stink Weed is not fit for use, and unless such stock is removed from such pasture two or three weeks previous to slaughtering the beef is unmarketable. The body is, indeed, included in the dominion, but its subjection follows as a necessary result: it is not the primary subject. Those spiritual parts require truth to influence them. They require knowledge to guide them. What they need is, not an army of the kingdom, nor a despotism of the kingdom, nor a treasure of the kingdom, but a word of the kingdom. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What’s better than a lost treasure? Seven lost treasures! These rarely seen Dr. Seuss stories were published in magazines in the early 1950s and are finally available in book form. They include “The Bippolo Seed” (in which a scheming feline leads a duck toward a bad decision), “The Rabbit, the Bear, and the Zinniga-Zanniga” (about a rabbit who is saved from a bear by a single eyelash), “Gustav, the Goldfish” (an early rhymed version of the Beginner Book A Fish Out of Water), “Tadd and Todd” (about a twin who is striving to be an individual), “Steak for Supper” (in which fantastic creatures follow a boy home in anticipation of a steak dinner), “The Strange Shirt Spot” (the inspiration for the bathtub-ring scene in The Cat in the Hat Comes Back), and “The Great Henry McBride” (about a boy whose far-flung career fantasies are bested only by those of Dr. Seuss himself). An introduction by Seuss scholar Charles D. Cohen traces the history of the stories, which demonstrate an intentional move toward the writing style we now associate with Dr. Seuss. Cohen also explores the themes that recur in well-known Seuss stories (like the importance of the imagination or the perils of greed). With a color palette enhanced beyond the limitations of the original magazines, this is a collection that no Seuss fan (whether scholar or second grader) will want to miss.

Only with its paperback publication thirty years later did this novel receive the recognition it deserves—--and still enjoys. Having sold-to-date millions of copies worldwide, Call It Sleep is the magnificent story of David Schearl, the "dangerously imaginative" child coming of age in the slums of New York.

Book excerpt: A solitary artisan. A legacy of bread-baking. And one secret that could collapse her entire identity. Liesl McNamara’s life can be described in one word: bread. From her earliest memory, her mother and grandmother passed down the mystery of baking and the importance of this deceptively simple food. And now, as the owner of Wild Rise bake house, Liesl spends every day up to her elbows in dough, nourishing and perfecting her craft. But the simple life she has cultivated is becoming quite complicated. Her head baker brings his troubled grandson into the bakeshop as an apprentice. Her waitress submits Liesl’s recipes to a popular cable cooking show. And the man who delivers her flour—a single father with strange culinary habits—seems determined to win Liesl’s affection. When Wild Rise is featured on television, her quiet existence appears a thing of the past. And then a phone call from a woman claiming to be her half-sister forces Liesl to confront long-hidden secrets in her family’s past. With her precious heritage crumbling around her, the baker must make a choice: allow herself to be buried in detachment and remorse, or take a leap of faith into a new life. Filled with both spiritual and literal nourishment, Stones for Bread provides a feast for the senses from award-winning author Christa Parrish. "A quietly beautiful tale about learning how to accept the past and how to let go of the parts that tie you down." —RT Book Reviews, 4.5 stars, TOP PICK!
