Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Vitality and Germination of Seeds It has long been known that the conditions under which plants are grown and the degree of maturity at the time of harvesting are fac tors which play an important part in the life of seeds. But, granting that seeds are of strong vitality at the time of harvesting, there remain to be considered the methods of gathering and curing, the water content of the seed at the time of storing, the methods of stor age, the humidity and temperature of the surrounding atmosphere, the composition of the seed, the nature of the seed coats, activities within the cells, and numerous other factors which play important parts in the life of the seed. The conditions necessary for the successful germination of a seed of good vitality and the chemical transformations accompanying these early stages of development have received considerable attention from numerous investigators. These changes and conditions are fairly well understood for many of our common seeds. However, several impor tant facts still remain unexplained, and our knowledge will not be complete until each and every species has'been carefully studied. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Vitality of Buried Seeds So much has already been written on the germination of seeds that have remained dormant in the'soil for a number of years, in some cases even for centuries, that it Seemed desirable to determine with some degree of accuracy the length of time that certain seeds will retain their vitality when buried in the soil under known conditions. Accordingly, in the autumn of 1902, 112 different samples of seeds were selected for these expe-riments, as follows: . Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Agricultural Science, Vol. 9: 1918-19 The seeds of many species of plants have a habit of germinating in un expected places under various conditions, and the question of the vitality of seeds is one that has frequently engaged the attention of. Scientists. It has often been claimed that seeds obtained from old pyramids and sepulchres have germinated when placed in favourable circumstances, but Becquerel1 states that strict enquiry and experiment show that authentic seeds of such origin will not germinate, but that the seeds so obtained which do germinate have proved to be frauds insetted by the fellaheen for the sake of gain. Various writers (quoted bv Becquerel) have claimed the power of germination for seeds buried for very long periods. Michelet elaimed that seeds of Galimn nlicum, buried 3000 years ago in the valley of Doubs, had retained their power of growth; von Held reich, that Glrmcium Serpieri from land covered by excavated scoriae 1500 years ago, was still viable; much doubt, however, has been thrown on the authenticity of such seeds. Information of this kind is of comparatively little value as evidence, as there is no definite proof of the time at which the seed actually reached its position or of the way in which it was transported. More satisfactory evidence has been obtained by the attempted germination of seeds of known age by various observers. Becquerel quotes experiments in which 500 species of seeds were sown, some of which were nearly 200 years old. Only four families gave any germination, Leguminosae, Nelumbifweae, Malvaceae, Labiatae. Cuminosae. 18 species germinated out of 90 sown. Ages 28-87 years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kentucky Bluegrass Seed: Harvesting, Curing, and Cleaning The seed of Kentucky bluegrass forms an important item in the grass-seed trade of the eastern United States, both in the'domestic market and for export. In the absence of precise statistics, it may be stated that the annual crop averages from to bushels, with-a value of to In the progress of our studies in the seed laboratory a surprising variation was found in the percent age of germination of this seed. It was suspected that the vitality of the seed was injured at some Stage in the process of harvesting or curing. An investigation was therefore institutedwhich has involved an examination, by Mr. Pieters and Mr. Brown, of the field operations of the growers in Kentucky during the harvesting seasons of 1900 and 1901, together with an extensive series'of germination tests-conducted in Washington. This investigation, the first results of which are here with published, has demonstrated conclusivelythat the frequent low germination of Kentucky bluegrass Seed is in reality. Due to improper treatment during the process of curing'the crop, which results in over heating the seed and destroying its Vitality. The investigation has demonstrated, further, that this overheating is preventable. It is believed that a drying apparatus can. Be used which will obviate the difficulty and take the place of the expensive hand labor or expensive storage facilities which otherwise are necessary. Further experiments relative to such appa'ratus are planned for the coming year. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Germination of Treated Shortleaf Pine Seed The study was made in greenhouse facilities of the University of Missouri, using 1957 Missouri seed that had been stored in sealed containers at 32 to 36 F. Moisture content of this seed before stratification was about 22 percent. Treatments studied were stratification for 20, 40, and 60 days at 38 to 40 F. Followed by storage for 2, 15, and 30 days at 38 and 60 F. Some seed lots received no coating, others the sticker only, and the rest were treated with both sticker and a mixture of two repellents. All treatment combinations were replicated four times. There were 220 sample lots of 100 seeds each. The polyethylene-plastic-bag method of seed stratification was used in this study. Seed soaked in water at 60 to 70 F. For 24 hours was drained, sealed in plastic bags, and placed in a refriger ator (fig. Repellents and sticker were applied after stratification but before storage. The sticker used was Dow Latex si2r; repellents were Endrin 25w, a rodent repellent that also possesses insecticidal properties, and sublimed anthraquinone, a bird repellent. Two pounds of Endrin 25w (25 percent concentration) and 15 pounds of anthraquinone were applied per 100 pounds of seed. Book excerpt: Regarded by many as the most comprehensive anthology of all time, ‘The Harvard Classics’ was first published in 1909 under the supervision of the Harvard president Charles W. Eliot. An esteemed academic, Eliot had argued that the elements of a liberal education could be gained by spending 15 minutes a day reading from a collection of books that could fit on a five-foot shelf. The publisher P. F. Collier challenged Eliot to make good on this statement and ‘Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf’ was the result. Eight years later Eliot added a further 20 volumes as a sub-collection titled ‘The Harvard Classics Shelf of Fiction’, offering some of the greatest novels and short stories of world literature. The exhaustive anthology of the ‘The Harvard Classics’ comprises every major literary figure, philosopher, religion, folklore and historical subject up to the twentieth century. This comprehensive eBook presents the complete anthology, with Eliot’s original introductions, numerous illustrations, rare texts and the usual Delphi bonus material.
