Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Vision of the Foam Mowbray was a young physician who had obtained his degrees, with honours in special subjects, at a leading College, three years before his introduction to the reader. He went abroad to extend by observation and experience his knowledge of the science to which his life would be devoted, and on returning home received from an old friend of his father's, Dr. Fortescue an invitation to assist him in an extensive practice at Bayview. Mowbray consented the more readily because he knew that old Fortescue had an interesting and only daughter, Helen, and his acceptance of the position was socially and professionally a desirable opening for a young man on the threshold of his career. Youth being ever prone to indulge the pleasing romance of hope, his fancy painted the bright prospect of winning Helen's heart and hand and succeeding to her father's business. Time and chance too often shatter such glowing illusions, as Mowbray was soon to discover in the most unexpected manner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Vision of the Foam The arrival one summer afternoon in the town of Bayview of a distinguished looking young woman, who entered her name in the hotel register as Edith Busch, was destined in the sequel to prove a memorable event. She came alone. Those who first saw her were struck with the incomparable charms of her person. She lit up their dull methodical lives with a dream of rare beauty and inspired ideas of mystery and romance which are often associated with women of fragile and exquisite loveliness. When, later on, gossips enjoyed the congenial pleasure of full deliberation and discussion they hinted suspiciously, without any particular reason, that such a charming creature had some secret purpose in coming alone amongst them. Prying eyes searched for a clue to her business, her mode of life, or her antecedents; but neither idle nor malignant curiosity, could obtain any particulars to account for her sudden and mysterious appearance in Bayview. Book excerpt: Amassing a body of work that could not be ignored, Chamberlain has been clumsily shoehorned into a variety of ill-fitting categories. Perhaps the most fertile of these is the retroactive link with Abstract Expressionism. His choice of vernacular materials also tied him to Pop. These same materials understood as products of standardized manufacturing associated him with Minimalism, encouraged by the unwavering critical support of Donald Judd. His method of assembly drew him toward Neo-Dada. He remains the inveterate rebel without a tribe, while still being recognized as a standard-bearer of sculptural practice. Driven by the pursuit of what he does not already know, the desire for unprecedented information and knowledge, Chamberlain turned away from car metal to experiment with new materials for a period. In the summer of 1966, he began squeezing and tying urethane foam.

Book excerpt: In his first published monograph, Tyler Mitchell, one of America's distinguished photographers, imagines what a Black utopia could look like. I Can Make You Feel Good, is a 206-page celebration of photographer and filmmaker Tyler Mitchell's distinctive vision of a Black utopia. The book unifies and expands upon Mitchell's body of photography and film from his first US solo exhibition at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York. Each page of I Can Make You Feel Good is full bleed and bathed in Mitchell's signature candy-colored palette. With no white space visible, the book's design mirrors the photographer's all-encompassing vision which is characterized by a use of glowing natural light and rich color to portray the young Black men and women he photographs with intimacy and optimism. The monograph features written contributions from Hans Ulrich Obrist (Artistic Director, Serpentine Galleries), Deborah Willis (Chair of the Department of Photography & Imaging at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University), Mirjam Kooiman (Curator, Foam) and Isolde Brielmaier (Curator-at-Large, ICP), whose critical voices examine the cultural prevalence of Mitchell's reimagining of the Black experience. Based in Brooklyn, Mitchell works across many genres to explore and document a new aesthetic of Blackness. He is regularly published in avant- garde magazines, commissioned by prominent fashion houses, and exhibited in renowned art institutions, Mitchell has lectured at many such institutions including Harvard University, Paris Photo and the International Center of Photography (ICP), on the politics of image making.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ursula Hegi returns with a luminous epic of a bicultural family filled with passion and aspirations, tragedy, and redemption. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Stefan Blau, whom readers will remember from Stones from the River, flees Burgdorf, a small town in Germany, and comes to America in search of the vision he has dreamed of every night. The novel closes nearly a century later with Stefan's granddaughter, Emma, and the legacy of his dream: the Wasserburg, a once-grand apartment house filled with the hidden truths of its inhabitants both past and present. The Vision of Emma Blau illustrates a fascinating picture of immigrants in America, including their dreams and disappointments, the challenges of assimilation, the frailty of language and its transcendence, the love that bonds generations and the cultural wedges that drive them apart.

Book excerpt: This collection of essays examines the potential connections between speculative fiction and actual social change. Through a variety of approaches, the contributors explore whether consumers of science fiction and fantasy narratives can experience a real shift in their worldviews as a result of that consumption. Topics include the utopian vision of California in Ursula K. LeGuin's Always Coming Home, the changing role of women in science fiction pulp magazines, and the representation of progress and social change in popular graphic novels.
