Book excerpt: An uncoupled CFD-DSMC technique is developed and applied to provide solutions for continuum jets interacting with rarefield external flows. The technique is based on a correlation of the appropriate Bird breakdown parameter for a transitional-rarefield condition that defines a surface within which the continuum solution is unaffected by the external flow-jet interaction. The method is applied to two problems to assess and demonstrate its validity: one of a jet interaction in the transitional-rarefied flow regime and the other in the moderately rarefield regime. Results show that the appropriate Bird breakdown surface for uncoupling the continuum and non-continuum solutions is a function of a non-dimensional parameter relating the momentum flux and collisionality between the two interacting flows.

Book excerpt: The combined Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) and Monotonic Lagrangian Grid (MLG) methodologies are used on the massively parallel Connection Machines CM-5 to solve for the properties of a low density hypersonic flow through a channel containing a wedge. Numerical issues related to grid generation around the obstacle, the effects of resolution in terms of the simulated to actual particle ratio, and the use of time-averaging to obtain a statistically converged solution are discussed. A method is presented for quantifying the effects of the grid on the solution. The flow field shows many important aerodynamic features, such as shock waves, boundary layers, expansion fan, and their interactions. Since the flow is so rarefied, these structures are diffuse compared to what is expected in a continuum flow. For example, the reattachment shock behind the trailing edge of the wedge degenerates into a diffuse viscous layer. Other low density effects include the velocity slip, which peaks near the leading edges where the density is low, and temperature jump of the gas adjacent to the solid surfaces, which is highest at the entrance of the channel and decreases further downstream. The calculated skin friction and heat transfer agree well with the Reynolds analogy for boundary layer flow. The computed pressure distributions along the wall are consistent with hypersonic viscous theory and other DSMC calculations.

Book excerpt: Calculation of drag coefficient of a flat semi-infinite heat-insulated plate in a hypersonic gas flow with slip is described. It is assumed that the region of flow between joined strong jumps of the packing and the plate consists of a non-viscous zone and laminar boundary layer. The strong interaction of the jump with the layer is considered. In calculation of the boundary layer the integral form of equation of pulses with linear profile of speed is used and taking into account the speed of slip. Parameters of flow on the external boundary of the boundary layer are calculated by the method of tangential wedges.

Book excerpt: Stewartson's theory for axisymmetric hypersonic flow of a model gas with strong viscous interaction and strong shock wave is extended to power-law viscosity variation, nonunit Prandtl number, and body shapes other than power laws. For power-law bodies, the generalized theory is obtained in closed form without recourse to numerical integration. In addition, numerical computations are presented for axisymmetric flow over a three-quarter power-law body with strong shock wave and viscous interactions that range from weak to strong. (Author).

Book excerpt: An attempt is made to reflect on current focuses in certain areas of hypersonic flow research by examining recent works and their issues. Aspects of viscous interaction, flow instability, and nonequilibrium aerothermodynamics pertaining to theoretical interest are focused upon. The field is a diverse one, and many exciting works may have either escaped the writer's notice or been abandoned for the sake of space. Students of hypersonic viscous flow must face the transition problems towards the two opposite ends of the Reynolds or Knudsen number range, which represents two regimes where unresolved fluid/gas dynamic problems abound. Central to the hypersonic flow studies is high-temperature physical gas dynamics; here, a number of issues on modelling the intermolecular potentials and inelastic collisions remain the obstacles to quantitative predictions. Research in combustion and scramjet propulsion will certainly be benefitted by advances in turbulent mixing and new computational fluid dynamics (CFD) strategies on multi-scaled complex reactions. Even for the sake of theoretical development, the lack of pertinent experimental data in the right energy and density ranges is believed to be among the major obstacles to progress in aerothermodynamic research for hypersonic flight. To enable laboratory simulation of nonequilibrium effects anticipated for transatmospheric flight, facilities capable of generating high enthalpy flow at density levels higher than in existing laboratories are needed (Hornung 1988). A new free-piston shock tunnel capable of realizing a test-section stagnation temperature of 10(exp 5) at Reynolds number 50 x 10(exp 6)/cm is being completed and preliminary tests has begun (H. Hornung et al. 1992). Another laboratory study worthy of note as well as theoretical support is the nonequilibrium flow experiment of iodine vapor which has low activation energies for vibrational excitation and dissociation, and can be studied in a laboratory with modest resou...

Book excerpt: The interaction of an impinging shock with the bow-shock generated by a blunt geometry is examined numerically for hypersonic (Mach 8, perfect gas) flows with modified Steger-Warming flux-split scheme. The modifications are designed to reduce numerical dissipation in the boundary layer thus improving the resolution and accuracy of the resulting algorithm. The full 2-D Navier- Stokes equations are solved in finite-volume formulation with central differencing for viscous terms and residual driven line Gauss-Seidel relaxation for time advancement. Grid resolution studies are performed. For a Type IV interaction, comparison with surface pressure and heat-transfer rates display good overall agreement with experimental values. For a Type III+ interaction, a detailed comparison is made with experimental surface quantities and a computation with Van Leer's flux-splitting algorithm. The peak amplification of pressure is modestly overpredicted with the current algorithm. The computed peak heat transfer is comparable to that obtained in previous research with Van Leer's splitting, although anomalous behavior is observed in the vicinity of the stagnation point. This behavior may be eliminated with appropriate corrections.

Book excerpt: Flow field studies of the shock wave and boundary layer development on a sharp flat plate are presented for a region of rarefied flow that bridges the gap between a classical hypersonic boundary layer downstream and a kinetic flow model at the leading edge. The measurements give a comprehensive picture of the flow pattern in the 'merged layer' or 'viscous layer' regime, which exists upstream of the region of validity of hypersonic viscous interaction theory. The results are derived from a combination of several probing and optical techniques and surface pressure measurements. From the detailed measurements, a true scale physical model of the flow field is constructed for the merged layer regime. One of the main features of the model is a thick, curved shock wave which decreases in strength as the leading edge is approached, even though the shock angle increases. Density profiles across the shock and viscous layers show that the structure of the flow field is quite different from the classical picture of a hypersonic boundary layer beneath an oblique Rankine-Hugonio shock wave.
