For young and old alike, The Life of Mary As Seen by the Mystics will forever impress the reader with an inspiring and truly unforgettable understanding of the otherwise unknown facts concerning Mary and the Holy Family.
Book Synopsis Miracles of the Blessed Virgin Mary by : William (of Malmesbury)
Download or read book Miracles of the Blessed Virgin Mary written by William (of Malmesbury) and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2015 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first title in the series Boydell Medieval Texts , which aims to present major works in a scholarly edition with a facing translation at an affordable price. The Miracles of the Virgin Mary, written c. 1135 by the Benedictine monk and historian William of Malmesbury (d. 1143), is important on several counts. It belongs to the first wave of collected miracles of the Virgin, produced by English Benedictine monks in the 1120s and '30s. These collections were to be influential across Europe because the stories in them were not connected with a particular shrine, but international. Although only two copies of William's collection survive in anything like its complete and original plan, in a dismembered form it too was influential across Europe and through the rest of the medieval period. The work is written in elegant Latin and embellished with William's customary erudition. His historical instinct is to the fore, as he tries to establish context and credibility for his stories. His ability as a latinist is shown by his frequent quotations and echoes of (sometimes unusual) classical authors. This is an important document in the history of Marian devotion in medieval Europe. In his long Prologue, William argues strongly for the Virgin's Immaculate Conception and bodily Assumption, doctrines still not generally accepted in western Europe at the time. With the appearance of this book all of William of Malmesbury's major works will be available in modern editions and translations.
Download or read book Mother of God written by Miri Rubin and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-21 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sweeping, ambitious study of the Virgin Mary’s emergence and role throughout Western historyHow did the Virgin Mary, about whom very little is said in the Gospels, become one of the most powerful and complex religious figures in the world? To arrive at the answers to this far-reaching question, one of our foremost medieval historians, Miri Rubin, investigates the ideas, practices, and images that have developed around the figure of Mary from the earliest decades of Christianity to around the year 1600. Drawing on an extraordinarily wide range of sources—including music, poetry, theology, art, scripture, and miracle tales—Rubin reveals how Mary became so embedded in our culture that it is impossible to conceive of Western history without her.In her rise to global prominence, Mary was continually remade and reimagined by wave after wave of devotees. Rubin shows how early Christians endowed Mary with a fine ancestry; why in early medieval Europe her roles as mother, bride, and companion came to the fore; and how the focus later shifted to her humanity and unparalleled purity. She also explores how indigenous people in Central America, Africa, and Asia remade Mary and so fit her into their own cultures.Beautifully written and finely illustrated, this book is a triumph of sympathy and intelligence. It demonstrates Mary’s endless capacity to inspire and her profound presence in Christian cultures and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Watching Jesus grow daily in wisdom and grace, the Blessed Virgin Mary pondered in her heart the secrets of her divine Son. Because Our Lady watched Christ grow each and every day, she created the most valuable manual of Christian perfection that can be had: her own heart. When from the Cross Jesus said, "Behold your mother," He invited us to read that manual the book of the heart of Mary wherein are found the secrets of the King. Unfortunately, few of Mary's words have come down to us, so we must read her heart as she read the heart of Jesus. We must ponder not only her words, but also the events of her life her attitudes, her actions, and even her silence. By imitating Our Lady, our lives like hers may also come to be full of grace. In The Little Book of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Fr. Raoul Plus helps us do just that, opening for us the book of the heart of Mary in the simplest yet most vivid ways. In pages filled with great devotion and penetrating wisdom, he moves us past modern misunderstandings and clich s about Mary into an encounter with the woman who was so remarkable that God Himself made her His spouse! Book Synopsis The Lost Gospel of Mary by : Frederica Mathewes-Green
Download or read book The Lost Gospel of Mary written by Frederica Mathewes-Green and published by Paraclete Press. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some Christians have piled the status of the mother of Jesus so high that it rivals that of her Son. Others ignore the Virgin Mary entirely. Behind all of the images is a girl who grew up to be the mother of Christ. How did the first Christians view her? What were the commonly understood facts about the Blessed Mother's early life --- before the Annunciation? How did Mary, the mother of Jesus, become the Theotokos? Frederica Mathewes-Green opens up the Virgin Mary's early life, offering a window into her centrality to the Christian Faith in new and sometimes startling ways. “Do you want to get to know Mary a bit better? Are you interested in entering a faithful Marian spirituality? Let Frederica Mathewes-Green facilitate a rich, traditional, authentic meeting of Mary. When it comes to spending time with the mother of our Lord, this book is second only to Scripture.” Lauren F. Winner, author of Girl Meets God, Mudhouse Sabbath, and Real Sex “The Mary that Frederica Mathewes-Green gives us in these winsome texts–a palpably real woman, at once humble and exalted--transcends the differences that persist even today among the main streams of the Christian tradition, not least because this Mary points beyond herself to the ultimate source of our hope and our joy. -John Wilson, editor, Books & Culture "Frederica Mathewes-Green is a sparkling writer. In The Lost Gospel of Mary, not only is her material fascinating, but so is her perspective as a thoughtful and irenic Orthodox Christian. There is much here to warm the heart as it engages the mind from here to warm the heart as it engages the mind from early in our comon Christian tradition." - Brian McLaren, author of A Generous Orthodoxy and www.brianmclaren.net.

Book excerpt: In 1929 the Holy Inquisition seized a secret communique from a senior bishop to the Roman emperor when Christianity became the state religion of the Roman Empire in 325AD, and hid it in the Vatican`s most sealed files. Graham Phillips` research in linking together the pieces of this puzzle at the heart of Western civilization has not only uncovered an extraordinary conspiracy, but also a wealth of new evidence pointing to the Jesus who did exist, and what became of his mother and early followers. Further, by identifying who the earliest Christians really were, he has possibly uncovered the resting place of Mary. This powerful story, which knits together historical analysis, archaeology, science and documentary evidence as never before, has opened up a whole new door of historical exploration.
