Alvaro Hickey follows the stories Baja California campesinos are spreading about visits from the Holy Virgin. Though Alvaro doubts her divinity, he’s firmly on her side. She wants them to vote the corrupt and tyrannical Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) out of power. When Lourdes Shuler asks him to unite her with her sister Lupe, Alvaro doesn’t think much of it until Lourdes claims Lupe is the campesinos’ Virgin. Alvaro’s not the kind to turn down an appeal for help, especially from such a beauty. Besides, the published sketch a savant girl drew of the Virgin looks just like Lourdes. He suspects that Lourdes might not have a sister after all. Then, on their way to dinner, Lourdes and Alvaro pick up a tail. Lourdes admits the man could’ve been sent by her brother Andres. But is Lourdes hiding something more? Alvaro chooses to stand with the lady although he knows she might become his last adventure. Then someone arrives to rid the land of this vagabond Virgin....

Book Synopsis Body-Poetics of the Virgin Mary by : Jane Petkovic
Download or read book Body-Poetics of the Virgin Mary written by Jane Petkovic and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Judeo-Christian scriptures understand humans as being made in the image of God. What exactly does this mean? Basic agreement is that it means humans can only know and understand themselves in relation to God. If, however, this God is pure uncreated spirit, where does human embodiment fit in? Is it an obstacle to understanding? Or is it in some way instructive? John Paul II comes down decisively in favor of the body's value and importance. In his catechetical series, widely known as the Theology of the Body, John Paul II analyzes what is distinctive about human beings. He undertakes a "reading" of the body. This book reflects on John Paul II's interpretation, extending his findings to the Virgin Mary. Her specifically female, maternal body is seen to offer insights into how the body images God--in how it "speaks." The transformations of the female body parallel the transformations of language in poetry. The reconfigurations and accommodations of the gestational body are, this book suggests, poetic incarnations of God-likeness. Body-Poetics of the Virgin Mary offers a Mariological slant on theological anthropology and a new way to think of how humans poetically image God.

Book Synopsis Martin Scorsese's Divine Comedy by : Catherine O'Brien
Download or read book Martin Scorsese's Divine Comedy written by Catherine O'Brien and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-05-17 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catherine O'Brien draws on the structure of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy to explore Martin Scorsese's feature films from Who's That Knocking at My Door (1967-69) to Silence (2016). This is the first full-length study to focus on the trajectory of faith and doubt during this period, taking very seriously the oft-quoted words of the director himself: 'My whole life has been movies and religion. That's it. Nothing else.' Films discussed include GoodFellas, The Last Temptation of Christ, Taxi Driver and Mean Streets, as well as the more recent The Wolf of Wall Street. In Dante's poem in 100 cantos, the Pilgrim is guided by the poet Virgil down through the circles of Hell in Inferno; he then climbs the steep Mountain of the Seven Deadly Sins in Purgatory; and he finally encounters God in Paradise. Embracing this popular analogy, this study envisions Scorsese as a contemporary Dante, with his filmic oeuvre offering the dimensions of a cinematic Divine Comedy. Drawing on debates at the heart of religious studies, theology, literature and film, this book goes beyond existing explorations of religion in Scorsese's work to address issues of sin and salvation within the context of wider debates in eschatology and the afterlife.

Book excerpt: It was perhaps unheard of in 1964 for two young blonde Mormon girls from Salt Lake City to hitchhike though the Middle East. My sister and I were driven by a desire for adventure to see the world beyond Utah. But we wanted to remain Mormons, to be able to return to our family, our culture, the world we belonged to. In order to do this, we had to keep our virginity. The Mormon religion requires a temple marriage to enter the Celestial Kingdom in the next life. You cannot be married in the Mormon temple if you are not a virgin. You not only lose your chance of going to the Celestial Kingdom, you risk becoming an outcast from your family as well as your church. Staying pure proved to be very difficult because we traveled only with boys. And as we formed romantic attachments to some of those boys, our struggle to stay chaste became harder and harder, even as we became more and more determined not to lose our virginity. We traveled through Egypt, Cyprus, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Turkey, and then to Greece, Rome, Stockholm, Copenhagen, and Germany, and finally to Spain and Morocco. We had adventures in cultures very different from Mormon America, but we did not want to become exiles from our own roots. We thought we would return to Salt Lake City to marry good Mormon men and become mothers. This memoir is about our realization, like that of other young women in the early Sixties, that our lives were not our own; they had been determined by the patriarchal culture we'd grown up in. As our horizons broadened, we saw that we no longer had to be bound by the narrow confines of Mormonism. We could strike into territory that was perhaps dangerous, certainly unknown, but was of our own choosing.
