He is accustomed to being asked, by ladies, 'have you written anything else except the Fairy Books?' He is then obliged to explain that he has not written the Fairy Books, but, save these, has written almost everything else, except hymns, sermons, and dramatic works. I also superintend. I find out where the stories are, and advise, and, in short, superintend. I do not write the stories out of my own head. The reputa tion of having written all the fairy books (an European reputation in nurseries and the United States of America) is the burden of an honour unto which I was not born.' It weighs upon and is killing me, as the general fash of being the wife of the Lord of Bur leigh, Burleigh House by Stamford Town, was too much for the village maiden espoused by that peer. Book excerpt: The Fairy Books, also known as "Coloured" Fairy Books, are a collection of twelve books of fairy tales, each associated with a different color. Andrew Land gathered them from various countries and translated them by Lang's wife and other translators. They also retold many of the stories. The collection has been enormously influential. While he did not collect the stories directly from oral tradition, he can lay claim to the first English translation of many of them. It was first published in 1904. Andrew Lang was a Scottish poet, novelist, and literary critic who lived from 1844 to 1912. Although he did not collect the stories from oral tradition himself, the breadth of his sources, who had originally collected them (with the notable exception of Madame d'Aulnoy), made the collections enormously influential. Many of the stories were first told in English by Lang. Although Lang made the majority of the selections, his wife and other translators did a large portion of the translating and retelling of the actual stories, as stated in the prefaces. This book includes an author biography as well as a table of contents that is linked to each chapter (Kindle edition). We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high-quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Violet Fairy Book - Illustrated by H. J. Ford' forms part of Andrew Lang's 'Coloured' Fairy Books series -- a series of twelve collections of fairy tales, published between 1889 and 1910. Each volume is distinguished by its own colour, and all in all, 437 tales from a wide array of cultures and countries are presented. Andrew Lang (1844 - 1912) was a Scots poet, novelist and literary critic, with a passion for folkloric story telling. Most of his volumes (including this, 'The Violet Fairy Book') were beautifully illustrated by Henry J. Ford (1860 - 1941), an inordinately talented artist who came to public attention with his illustrations for Lang. The books captured the imagination of British children, and later became worldwide bestsellers in the 1880s and 1890s. This 'Violet Book' contains many traditional fairy tales such as 'The Finest Liar in the World', 'The Lute Player', The Two Frogs', The History of Dwarf Long Nose', 'The Monkey and the Jellyfish', 'The Boys with the Golden Stars', 'Virgilius the Sorcerer', 'Morgarzea and his son' and many more. Pook Press celebrates the great 'Golden Age of Illustration' in children's classics and fairy tales - a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage Golden Age illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Crimson Fairy Book Each Fairy Book demands a preface from the Editor, and these introductions are inevitably both monotonous and unavailing. A sense of literary honesty compels the Editor to keep repeating that he is the Editor, and not the author of the Fairy Tales, just as a distinguished man of science is only the Editor, not the Author of Nature. Like nature, popular tales are too vast to be the creation of a single modern mind. The Editor's business is to hunt for collections of these stories told by peasant or savage grandmothers in many climes, from New Caledonia to Zululand; from the frozen snows of the Polar regions to Greece, or Spain, or Italy, or far Lochaber. When the tales are found they are adapted to the needs of British children by various hands, the Editor doing little beyond guarding the interests of propriety, and toning down to mild reproofs the tortures inflicted on wicked stepmothers, and other naughty characters. These explanations have frequently been offered already; but, as far as ladies and children are concerned, to no purpose. They still ask the Editor how he can invent so many stories - more than Shakespeare, pumas, and Charles Dickens could have invented in a century. And the Editor still avers, in Prefaces, that he did not invent one of the stories; that nobody knows, as a rule, who invented them, or where, or when.
