Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Victory of Venizelos a Study of Greek Politics, 1910-1918 During the last few months it has become apparent that a skilfully conducted campaign, emanating from Headquarters in Switzerland, is being carried out, with London and New York as its chief objectives, to capture them and to persuade them that Greece's only hope of salvation lies in recovering her beloved Constantine. Not only have we been informed in countless interviews that Constantine was always devoted to the Entente, and that he has been cruelly misrepresented by his enemies, but it is also asserted that the Greek people, almost to a man, have grown tired of M. Venizelos, and are pining for the return of their former King. A certain remote semblance of truth has been lent to these statements by a slight reaction in Greece itself, which has set in during the past months. Book Synopsis Eleftherios Venizelos by : Paschalis M. Kitromilides
Download or read book Eleftherios Venizelos written by Paschalis M. Kitromilides and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2006-06-26 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eleftherios Venizelos, Prime Minister of Greece, 1910-1920 and 1928-1932, could be considered from many points of view the creator of contemporary Greece and one of the main actors in European diplomacy in the period 1910-1935. Yet the last book-length study discussing the man, his politics and his broader role in twentieth-century history has appeared in English more than fifty years ago. The aspiration of the present book is to fill this lacuna by bringing together the concerted research effort of twelve experts on Greek history and politics. The book draws on considerable new research that has appeared in Greek in the last quarter century, but does not confine the treatment of the subject in a purely Greek or even Balkan context. The entire project is oriented toward placing the study of Venizelos' leadership in the broad setting of twentieth-century politics and diplomacy. The complex and often dramatic trajectory of Venizelos' career from Cretan rebel to an admired European statesman is chartered out in a sequence of chapters that survey his meteoric rise and great achievements in Greek and European politics in the early decades of the twentieth century, amidst violent passions and tragic conflicts. Five further essays appraise in depth some critical aspects of his policies, while a final chapter offers some glimpses into a great statesman's personal and intellectual world. The book is based on extensive scholarship but it is eminently readable and it should appeal to all those interested in twentieth-century history, politics and biography, offering a vivid sense of the hopes and tragedies of Greek and European history in the age of the Great War and of the interwar crisis.
Download or read book Sweet Greeks written by Ann Flesor Beck and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gus Flesor came to the United States from Greece in 1901. His journey led him to Tuscola, Illinois, where he learned the confectioner's trade and opened a business that still stands on Main Street. Sweet Greeks sets the story of Gus Flesor's life as an immigrant in a small town within the larger history of Greek migration to the Midwest. Ann Flesor Beck's charming personal account recreates the atmosphere of her grandfather's candy kitchen with its odors of chocolate and popcorn and the comings-and-goings of family members. "The Store" represented success while anchoring the business district of Gus's chosen home. It also embodied the Midwest émigré experience of chain migration, immigrant networking, resistance and outright threats by local townspeople, food-related entrepreneurship, and tensions over whether later generations would take over the business. An engaging blend of family memoir and Midwest history, Sweet Greeks tells how Greeks became candy makers to the nation, one shop at a time.

Download or read book Is This a Private Fight or Can Anybody Join? written by Zachary C. Shirkey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some countries join interstate wars well after the war has begun, waiting months and often years, and thus changing their beliefs about the wisdom of entering a war. This volume examines why this might be so, focusing on unforeseen events in wars which cause neutral players to update their expectations about the trajectory of the war, therefore explaining why some wars spread while others do not. The author uses a combination of case studies and statistical analysis to test this theory: the Crimean War, the Franco-Prussian War, World War I, and a study of the spread of war since World War II. Designed for courses on and research into war and other international security issues, this book is a must read.
