Excerpt: ...World was all before them."--(Milton.) argument: The Story, in its present stage, affords an illustration of one of the most conspicuous social features of the Era, reflected in the feelings, prospects, and regrets, of the Emigrant in his Exodus. The Votary of the Spirit of Change and Progress, having now seen the objects of his Invocation (Book i.) thus far accomplished in the downfall of the Enemy of the Good Cause, is now called, by his Spirit Guide, to trace the movements of Alastor in leading his Brothers in arms to reap the fruits of their important victory. Consistently with its Argument of Social Advance, the action of the Story, in the ensuing events, proceeds with the furtherance of this object and moral end. The new fruits of Victory are forthwith attained in the establishment of a New World of improved Institutions based on principles of Self-Government and Freedom, and rising upon the wreck of an "Old World" of Systems of Error. Such is the proposal of the Chief to his followers, and such is his Mission, to be further illustrated in the inauguration of the "Golden Shrine" in a future stage of events. The tide of Emigration flowing more steadily to the Australian Colonies, than any other (see Notes). AUSTRALIA is marked out by the Story as the goal of Alastor's venture. Independently of this, its importance as a feature of the J5ra, demands its prominence in any picture or narrative of illustration: and as regards the various opinions of its Future, they are stated in Note 2 of the present Book. The New physical World is thus legitimately constituted by the Story, as the seat of the New moral World. Alastor, accordingly, accompanied by Fidalma, his Betrothed, and followed by Guiscard and his Patriot...

Book Synopsis The Language of the Past by : Ross Wilson
Download or read book The Language of the Past written by Ross Wilson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-07-14 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Language of the Past analyzes the use of history in discourses within the political, media and the public sphere. It examines how particular terms, phrases and allusions first came into usage, developed and how they are employed today. To speak of something or someone as representing the 'stone age', or characterize an institution as 'byzantine', to describe a business relationship as 'feudal' or to disparage ideals or morality as 'Victorian', refers to both a perception of the past and its relationship to the present. Whilst dictionaries and etymologies define meanings and origin points of words or phrases, this study examines how history is maintained and used within society through language. Detailing the specific words and phrases associated with particular periods used to describe contemporary society, this thorough examination of language and history will be of great interest to those studying historiography, social history and linguistics.
Book Synopsis Benjamin Disraeli Letters by : Michael W. Pharand
Download or read book Benjamin Disraeli Letters written by Michael W. Pharand and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 910 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Times Literary Supplement recently praised the Benjamin Disraeli Letters volumes as ‘a remarkable series … on its way to becoming one of the landmarks of Victorian-era scholarship.’ Each volume provides a unique record of Disraeli’s daily activities as well as rare glimpses into his decision-making process and his relationships with colleagues and political foes. This latest volume covers 1865 to 1867, crucial years leading up to Disraeli’s first ministry in 1868. During this period, the prime minister, Lord Derby, and Disraeli, chancellor of the exchequer, grappled with a number of challenges. Their greatest accomplishment, however, was the passage of a landmark franchise reform bill that expanded the electorate in England to an unprecedented extent. The story is told through 697 letters, of which 525 have never before been published and 78 only in part. Thoroughly annotated, the notes often include the other side of Disraeli’s correspondence – including many letters from Derby and Queen Victoria. Finally, this volume is cross-referenced with the previous ones to obtain as complete a picture as possible of political events during Disraeli’s lifetime.

Book Synopsis A Walk in Victoria's Secret by : Kate Daniels
Download or read book A Walk in Victoria's Secret written by Kate Daniels and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With A Walk in Victoria’s Secret, Kate Daniels crafts a bold, brassy, yet delicate vision of a woman’s growth. Imbued with a unique poetic voice that is utterly feminist, these poems possess a fiery intensity for those abuses no woman can ever quite recover from, but also reveal the loving, forgiving temperament of the mother no woman can do without. From the title poem’s unapologetic celebration of the breast to a belated apology to the girl who integrated her elementary school, to the awkward juxtaposition of elderly and young women in a gynecologist’s office on September 11, 2001, Daniels provides a rich array of meditations on what it means to be a woman in our time. Buoyant and entertaining, singular in style, and exuberant in language, A Walk in Victoria’s Secret offers an intimate look at women’s experiences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true story for fans of the PBS Masterpiece series Victoria, this page-turning biography reveals the real woman behind the myth: a bold, glamorous, unbreakable queen—a Victoria for our times. Drawing on previously unpublished papers, this stunning portrait is a story of love and heartbreak, of devotion and grief, of strength and resilience. NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE NEW YORK TIMES • ESQUIRE • THE CHICAGO PUBLIC LIBRARY “Victoria the Queen, Julia Baird’s exquisitely wrought and meticulously researched biography, brushes the dusty myth off this extraordinary monarch.”—The New York Times Book Review (Editor’s Choice) When Victoria was born, in 1819, the world was a very different place. Revolution would threaten many of Europe’s monarchies in the coming decades. In Britain, a generation of royals had indulged their whims at the public’s expense, and republican sentiment was growing. The Industrial Revolution was transforming the landscape, and the British Empire was commanding ever larger tracts of the globe. In a world where women were often powerless, during a century roiling with change, Victoria went on to rule the most powerful country on earth with a decisive hand. Fifth in line to the throne at the time of her birth, Victoria was an ordinary woman thrust into an extraordinary role. As a girl, she defied her mother’s meddling and an adviser’s bullying, forging an iron will of her own. As a teenage queen, she eagerly grasped the crown and relished the freedom it brought her. At twenty, she fell passionately in love with Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, eventually giving birth to nine children. She loved sex and delighted in power. She was outspoken with her ministers, overstepping conventional boundaries and asserting her opinions. After the death of her adored Albert, she began a controversial, intimate relationship with her servant John Brown. She survived eight assassination attempts over the course of her lifetime. And as science, technology, and democracy were dramatically reshaping the world, Victoria was a symbol of steadfastness and security—queen of a quarter of the world’s population at the height of the British Empire’s reach. Drawing on sources that include fresh revelations about Victoria’s relationship with John Brown, Julia Baird brings vividly to life the fascinating story of a woman who struggled with so many of the things we do today: balancing work and family, raising children, navigating marital strife, losing parents, combating anxiety and self-doubt, finding an identity, searching for meaning.
Book Synopsis Victoria's Year by : Richard L. Stein
Download or read book Victoria's Year written by Richard L. Stein and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1988-03-31 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although 150 years have passed since Princess Victoria became Queen, the first twelve months of her reign remain relatively unexplored. In the first literary history to focus specifically on the year 1837-1838, Richard L. Stein examines a wide variety of cultural products--in visual art and architecture, statistics and maps, scientific writing and popular journalism, and literature itself--to reconstruct the thought and experience of England in "Victoria's Year." Surveying such figures as Carlyle, Cruikshank, Darwin, Dickens, Martineau, Ruskin, Tennyson, and Turner, this wide-ranging volume examines the connections and discontinuities within the values, beliefs, and modes of representation of this brief cultural moment, describing how various arts struggled to produce new, legible, and stable signs to reflect unprecedented modes of experience in a rapidly changing culture. Stein shows how this quest for legibility and certainty was often undermined from inside and out, and the ways in which "the order of things," in Foucault's sense of the phrase, was constantly being reasserted or broken down. Revealing how this particular historical moment was understood by those who lived it, and how an array of cultural products served to mediate the most radically new and unfamiliar aspects of the age, Victoria's Year offers new insights into the process that created the myth of Victorianism.

Perched in the Catskill Mountains, the centuries-old, ivy-covered campus was home until the tragic death of her girlfriend. Now, after a year away, she's returned to finish high school. She even has her old room in Godwin House, the exclusive dormitory rumored to be haunted by the spirits of five Dalloway students—girls some say were witches. The Dalloway Five all died mysteriously, one after another, right on Godwin grounds. Witchcraft is woven into Dalloway's past. The school doesn't talk about it, but the students do. In secret rooms and shadowy corners, girls convene. And before her girlfriend died, Felicity was drawn to the dark. She's determined to leave that behind now, but it's hard when Dalloway's occult history is everywhere. And when the new girl won't let her forget. It's Ellis Haley's first year at Dalloway, and she has already amassed a loyal following. A prodigy novelist at seventeen, Ellis is a so-called method writer. She's eccentric and brilliant, and Felicity can't shake the pull she feels to her. So when Ellis asks Felicity to help her research the Dalloway Five for her second book, Felicity can't say no. Given her history with the arcane, Felicity is the perfect resource. And when history begins to repeat itself, Felicity will have to face the darkness in Dalloway—and herself.
