Book excerpt: The forty-five sermons collected in Volume 3 were composed and first delivered between October 1830 and November 1831. During that time Emerson's first wife, Ellen Tucker Emerson, died of tuberculosis, a loss that deeply affected Emerson. Transcribed and edited from manuscripts in Harvard's University's Houghton Library, the sermons are presented in a clear text approximating as nearly as possible the original version delivered to Emerson's congregation. As well as the detailed chronology, explanatory footnotes, and textual endnotes found in previous volumes, this one contains a comprehensive index.

Book excerpt: This book sets out to shed light on what is specific to American Transcendentalism by comparing it with the atheistic vision of German philosophers and theologians like Ludwig Feuerbach and Arthur Schopenhauer. The study argues that atheism was part of the discursive and religious context from which Transcendentalism emerged. Tendencies toward atheism were already inherent in Transcendentalist thought. The atheist scenario came to the surface in the controversy about Emerson’s “new views.” Contemporary critics charged that the deity Emerson worshipped was himself. Emersonian Transcendentalism thus anticipated some of the central concerns in the works of German atheists like Feuerbach. From idealism to atheism seemed but a short step.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sermon on the Liturgy of the Protestant Episcopal Church: Preached Before the Convention Held in Christ-Church, Philadelphia, June 15, 1808 The Authour of this Sermon, being unexpectedly called upon to preach before the Convention, only four days previous to the meeting of that body; and having his time almost entirely occupied by the duties of his academical and parochial charges, he could not possibly pay that attention to its composition, which the importance of the occasion and the dignity of his subject required. He, therefore, trusts the candid reader will pardon those deficiencies and errours, which a more extended period for its preparation might have enabled him to avoid. A few sentences in the course of the Sermon are transcribed from a Lecture on our Liturgy, attached to his Lectures on the Catechism of the Protestant Episcopal Church, lately published. Book excerpt: "One of the most significant men of letters in American history, Ralph Waldo Emerson was not only acquainted with the most prominent authors, reformers, and politicians of his day, but also had daily contact with such literary figures as Thoreau, Hawthorne, Margaret Fuller, and Bronson Alcott. Based on journals, correspondence, reminiscences, newspaper articles, and many other sources of information, this detailed chronology of the life of Emerson offers a daily accounting of what he read and wrote, where he traveled, who he saw, and his thoughts and opinions concerning the events and personalities of his day. All of his speeches are accounted for and, indeed, this volume provides the most complete and accurate record of his public appearances available. An Emerson Chronology is an important resource for students of nineteenth-century American literature, history, religion, and philosophy."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons of the Past: A Sermon, on the Anniversary of Ordination, Preached to the North Society, in Salem, Mass;, Sunday, November 19th, 1837 We have reason to be grateful that the System of slander adopted and countenan ced by those who ought to have known bet ter; is at last made to shew its own wicked ness and weakness, by being brought to the tribunal of the public press. And we call upon those of our 'orthodox lellow citizens who have been deceived by the calumnies which have so industriously and persever ingly been poured out through the medium of tracts, and discourses from the pulpit, and exhortations in the vestry, and dark insinuationsm private, to frown upon all such malignant defamation in future, and, 'while they enjoy their own sentiments in their own way, to protect the Unitarians from outrage and abuse on thepart of those whom they, contribute to support. Book excerpt: Since its beginning in the 1990s, Radical Orthodoxy has become perhaps the most influential, and certainly the most controversial, movement in contemporary theology. This book offers an introduction to the Radical Orthodox sensibility through sermons preached by some of those most prominent figures in radical orthodoxy. Accessible, challenging and varied, the sermons together help to suggest what Radical Orthodoxy might mean in practice.
