This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than a half-century ago, C. G. Chamberlayne, under the sponsorship of the Virginia State Library, transcribed, edited, and indexed a number of original Virginia parish vestry books, four of which are reprinted here. While the dates of coverage and lengths of the volumes vary, they are nonetheless similar in terms of scope and content. Each volume contains the oldest known records pertaining to that parish, in most cases beginning only a few years following the parish's date of formation. Mr. Chamberlayne begins each vestry book with an Introduction that pieces together the formation of the parish and important milestones in its history from published and original sources. Facsimilies of pages from the original vestry books, maps, and photographs help to put each volume into greater context, moreover. Appended to the vestry books are brief lists of the various parish ministers, with an indication of their earliest date of service as found in the records. The transcriptions themselves, ranging from about 250 to more than 600 pages of text, relate to the following issues growing out of the business affairs of colonial parish vestries; namely, payments to persons for services rendered to the parish, oaths and lists of oath-takers, news of the arrival of ministers, the appointment of church wardens, issues related to indentured servants, lists of tithables, payment of salaries and other obligations, the formation of parish precincts with the names of the families apportioned therein, the warding of children, and so on. In each case, these four scarce collections of colonial church records establish the existence of thousands of Virginia inhabitants, each of whom is easily found in the index or indexes at the back of the book.

This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mr. Chamberlayne's transcription of "The Vestry Book and Register of Bristol Parish" contains the earliest extant records of the parish. Among other things, the volume includes the minutes of all vestry meetings from October 30, 1720 to April 18, 1789, except for the period October 28, 1722 through November 11, 1723, and a register of births and baptisms, and a few deaths, spanning the period 1720-1798. The vestry book occupies about 60 percent of the transcription. Since it was concerned primarily with church business, most of the entries pertain to payments for services, tithables, guardianship issues, and so forth. Nevertheless, the frequent lists of accounts payable, witnesses to petitions, and so forth have the decided value of placing many colonists in Bristol Parish at a particular moment in time. The parish register, on the other hand, is an unassailable genealogical treasure. The vast majority of the more than 3,000 entries constitute records of birth and baptism, and they unfailingly indicate the names of the child, names of parents, date of birth, and date of baptism. In all, the parish register bears reference to over 9,000 persons, all of whom may be found in the comprehensive index at the back of the volume.

Book excerpt: A classic best-selling manual on Episcopalian faith for lifelong followers, newcomers, and those wishing to sample and explore the beliefs and organization of the denomination. The original Episcopal Handbook, published in 2008, was an instant classic and has been a best-seller ever since. Still providing helpful and insightful information about the Episcopal ethos with a certain amount of whimsy and complete accessibility, this revision maintains the best features of the original work, but adds an update and an expansion on the church today. This revision highlights Episcopal diversity—including more women and people of color in the biographical material—and focuses more on Episcopal, rather than Anglicans. Additions to this edition include updated illustrations, an expanded glossary, and new sections on church governance, the origins of religious belief, and a capsule summary of church history. The Handbook is suitable for use in Sunday school, confirmation classes, inquirer sessions—and for everyone from visitors to vestries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Vestry Handbook was first published in 1988 and a revised edition was published in 2000. Over that span of time it has sold nearly 90,000 copies and continues to sell well. Inevitably, such a working guidebook becomes out of date if not revised at regular intervals. The Canons of the church change and new issues confront Vestries. The author is consulting diocesan administrators, other clergy, the Church Deployment Office, and the Church Pension Fund concerning changes that need to be made. Following is a partial list indicating the kind of revisions needed: 1. Update the Canons Many of the Canons summarized in Appendix I, pp. 101-102, have been revised and renumbered. Canons are often referred to in the text and these need to be checked against the latest edition of the Canons. 2. Update the resource list 3. Update financial information The illustrations for salaries etc. given are in relevant amounts for 2000 and need to be updated. 4. Safe Church Training There is only a brief discussion of "sexual misconduct" and no direct reference to "safe church training." 5. Continuing EducationThe new canons and diocesan emphasis on this subject are a development since the current edition. 6. Dealing with conflict The material provided is in terms of local issues but new material needs to be provided on the current tensions in the Anglican Communion: how to handle tensions in the congregation and how to be sure property decisions are properly made in terms of national canons. 7. Technology The current edition is markedly out of date, with no references to websites, cell phones, Facebook, Twitter, etc., and their use in parish communications. 8. Other minor spot revisions and updates throughout the book."

This book was released on 1919 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This parish was established in 1712, and met in the homes of various planters until a church was built in 1724. The parish "was bounded on the east by St. Helena Sound and Combahee River, on the north by a line from the head of Combahee River to Savannah River and to the south on the ocean." These transcriptions of vestry minutes provide a detailed view of the business and spiritual affairs of the parishioners. They record the elections of church officers, financial transactions, and matters of church discipline. Since the parish was extensively involved in assisting its sick and poor members, there are innumerable instances of sums being paid for housing, nursing, and doctoring, and in some cases burying, parishioners. There are also investigations of illegitimacy, children being bound out, etc.
