Book excerpt: The Velvet Sky is a creative nonfiction biography by Cherie Battista who combines field research, family history, and fiction to piece together her Great Uncle Stephen Duckhouse's life. He shares his story with his sister in spirit, Annie, who guides him throughout the story. Stephen Duckhouse was born in 1897 in Birmingham, England and in 1910, Stephen and his brother Albert immigrated to Canada as Home Children--poor and orphaned children sent from the United Kingdom to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and South Africa. There he resided with Edgar McPhail, Ada Alde McPhail and John A. McPhail until 1916, when he joined the C.E.F. 129th Wentworth Battalion Regiment in Dundas, Wentworth County Ontario. Although under age, he said that he wanted to do his duty. Later in Europe, Private Duckhouse became part of the action at Vimy Ridge and Hill 70. With respect to those voices who can no longer speak for themselves, it is important to acknowledge that Stephen and Albert and their close family are real people. Stephen's story develops from darkness to light and evolves to show how a bleak chapter of British and Canadian history can enlighten the path for others.

Book excerpt: Equal parts steamy and funny, with a few genuinely creepy moments, this paranormal romance has everything -- compelling characters, plenty of witty banter, and a romance that just might be to die for. After losing both her parents before age 17, aspiring designer Caitlin Holte feels like her whole world has been turned upside down, and that was before she accidentally attracted the attention of a demon. Then, she learns that her hot, bad-boy neighbor, Adrian -- who might have just saved her life -- is actually a half-demon vampire. Suddenly, Caitlin is stuck with a vampire bodyguard who feels that the best way to protect her is to become her pretend boyfriend. Trouble is, Caitlin is starting to fall in love for real, while Adrian can never love a human. Caitlin trusts Adrian to keep her safe from his demon father, but will he be able to protect her heart? Temple West’s debut novel Velvet is a sexy, delightful romance chosen by readers like you for Macmillan's young adult imprint Swoon Reads. Praise for Velvet: “This romantic Twilight readalike shines with credible dialogue and fully developed characters.” —School Library Journal "Velvet is fun and very entertaining with snappy dialogue, awesome characters and some solid teen angst.” —The Windy Pages

Book excerpt: The novel is a coming of age story that follows a boy and a girl as they struggle to find their way emotionally and physically in a small southern town in middle 1970s. Both ultimately confront their worst fears and learn to trust each other and a close group of friends. The book is a search for love and understanding and shows the common fears we all share. The novel takes the reader on a rollercoaster ride that starts in a little girl's bedroom and ends savagely on the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. The book is about the triumph of the spirit and the constant unseen war between evil and good. ---------------------------------- REVIEWS You'll read it in one sitting!, October 7, 2002 Reviewer: A reader from Richland, MS USA This novel is a fantastic cross between J.D.Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye" and John Grisham's "The Client" and it'll keep you wondering about the multi-story outcome to the very end! Great book! Kudo's to Mr. Reeves! I'm ready for more. -Will A Fantastic Read!!! A Fantastic Ride!!!, September 5, 2002 Reviewer: A reader from New Orleans, LA USA VELVET SKY is a fast, deeply felt emotional ride set in central Mississippi in the 60s. The writer pulls you in from the first page and carries you on a journey that you won't soon forget. It is an amazing effort for a first novel. Bravo! A Modern Southern Masterpiece, June 24, 2003 Reviewer: A reader from South Carolina ,USA Rusty Van Reeves is 10 days younger than I am. He describes the childhood and coming of age of young people in a small Mississippi town in the early 1970's. This town could be anywhere in the south, the children anyone of a group of forty-something people. I felt so many of his descriptions in my heart, and deep in my memories. He could have been describing any number of days and summer nights from my growing up. The main characters are all very different, yet linked in many ways. Patrick is a young man who is being pushed by his father to become a prize athlete. Chase has been his best friend since grade school and is struggling with a secret he feels he must keep or risk losing everything he holds precious; Chelsea has a secret of her own that is so horrible it could slowly destroy her. Kelley is a beautiful, yet kindhearted girl who cares deeply about everyone. These characters are slowly drawn together when Chelsea's secret comes to light when a horrible murder is discovered. The characters in this book are very believable. The reader grows to understand and care about each and every one. The book progresses from the early ages of 9 or 10 until the characters are graduating high school. The mystery of the two young people's secrets and the growing love between the other two keep the book interesting and rapidly moving forward. All in all, Velvet Sky is a wonderful read and I would gladly recommend it. ~Susan Johnson /reviewer Great summer read!, June 13, 2003 Reviewer: A reader from Houston, TX USA During the summer I like reading books that remind me of my childhood and growing up in the south. VELVET SKY is the perfect book to transport you back in time (1960's/1970's) to that magical era. The novel shows you the frustrations of first love and does a wonderful bit of storytelling that keeps you flipping the pages. I loved it! Must Read - Trip Back in Time to the 70s!, November 12, 2002 Reviewer: A reader from Austin, TX USA This novel, VELVET SKY by Rusty Van Reeves, is a multi-story effort. This guy knows how to cook on all cylinders. Once this book sets up the main characters it thrusts them into the fire and you find yourself (the reader) being pulled in from every direction. The book has a few minor grammar errors and a typo here and there but it takes NOTHING away from this multi-harmony

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illuminating biography of Lou Reed, featuring interviews with over 140 people who knew him intimately, plus previously unpublished photographs. As band leader of the Velvet Underground and later a successful solo artist, Reed was much more than what the general public came to know as the grumpy New Yorker in black who sang “Walk on the Wild Side.” To his dedicated admirers, he was one of the most innovative and intelligent songwriters of modern times—a natural outsider who lived a tumultuous and tortured life. In the course of his deep research into Reed’s life, from a humble upbringing on Long Island to death from liver disease in 2013, Howard Sounes interviewed more than 140 people who knew the artist intimately—some of whom have not spoken publicly about him before. With new revelations from former wives and lovers, family members, fellow band members and celebrities, and music industry figures, this book offers an updated, unfettered look at Reed’s creative process, his mental health problems, his bisexuality, his three marriages, and his addictions to drugs and alcohol. Featuring previously unpublished photographs of some of Reed’s most private moments, this is the definitive account of one of rock ’n’ roll’s most complicated and brilliant prophets. “Compelling . . . Sounes takes pride in carefully debunking the myths that have crept in from Reed’s own fictionalizations.” —The Sunday Telegraph “Controversial . . . Sounes’ book pushes the standard Reed narrative.” —New York Times “A measured chronicle of the life and music of Lou Reed . . . Sounes proves to be an amiable narrator who successfully reveals Reed as an innovative, influential musician.” —Publishers Weekly “A walk on the dark side.” —Independent “A must read . . . Sounes chronicles Reed’s turbulent, and often brutal, relationships with men and women . . . and the wayward talent that produced such classics as ‘Walk On The Wild Side.’” —Daily Mail

Book excerpt: After two days of traveling, I pulled up on Sugar's reins, stared at the trail ahead, turned in the saddle and looked at the dusty trail behind. It looked like silver water running off a duck's back, and the land in front of us seemed to sizzle, like a burning flame. Some of the terrain looked vaguely familiar, but then looking a second time, it didn't look like anything I had seen before. As I took another look, the subtle rise and fall of the land all looked the same.

Book excerpt: Imagine a book that has you sitting at the edge of your seat, turning each page, from cover to cover with breathless anticipation. Your heart pounds, your hands sweat, your mind wanting to know what happens next. Have you ever read a book that has you mused one moment to the next, and then breaks your heart and leaves you with tears streaming down your cheeks. Are you ready for a read so thought provoking that after reading it you are left changed forever. This is that book. Izz of Zia is the first novel of a three part trilogy that can be interpreted on two separate horizontal stratums: as an exciting, fantasy, action, adventure, or as a deeply spiritual saga. Izz of Zia is set in the First Age of the Noble Kings, in the Middle Era of the First Millennia, in the year one hundred and eleven, in the days of King Ozzdon, in the Empire of Xylenia, on the planet Zia. Betrayal from within threatens to tear a world that has lived in peace for thousands of years apart forever. This work is a multi-faceted writing that intertwines heartbreak with adoration, deceit with truth, betrayal with loyalty, creating a web in which two young heartthrobs that are as different as the east is far from the west learn the fathomless meaning of passion, devotion and true love. This is a book about a faith filled heart that wills to keep going no matter how many time it breaks, no matter how low life beats it down, no matter how close death comes to sweeping it under, hope rises from within. Prepare to be inspired by a love whose story begs to be told, and refuses to be denied no matter how painful, tragic, or tear-jerking.
