A comprehensive geographic spatially explicit wetlands data model could add significant advances for addressing wetland projects in Lucas County. The objective of this study was to create a systematic methodology to identify wetlands using remote sensing and GIS(Geographic Information System) techniques. The resulting wetlands inventory and classification advanced the wetlands project mapping needs. The model identified four primary wetlands of interest: prairie, coastal, forest, and riparian. The overall accuracy of the classification was 94.5%.

The NWI Program has produced wetland maps for 91% (78% final) of the lower 48 states, all of Hawaii, and 35% of Alaska. Wetlands are classified according to the Service's official wetland classification system (Cowardin et al. 1979). This classification describes wetlands by ecological system (Marine, Estuarine, Lacustrine, Riverine, and Palustrine), by subsystem (e.g., water depth, exposure to tides), class (vegetative life form or substrate type), subclass, water regimes (hydrology), water chemistry (pH and salinity), and special modifiers (e.g., alterations by humans). The maps have been converted to digital data for 47% of the lower 48 states and 18% of Alaska. The availability of digital data and geographic information system (GIS) technology make it possible to use NWI data for various geospatial analyses.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this investigation was to research and document the application of remote sensing technology to wetland detection and mapping. Various remote sensing sensors and platforms are evaluated (1) for suitability to monitor specific wetlands systems; (2) for their effectiveness in detailing the extent of wetlands; (3) for their capability to monitor changes; and (4) for the resulting relative cost-benefits of implementing and updating wetlands databases. The environment to be monitored consists of physiographic and ecological wetland resources affected directly or indirectly by anthropogenic activity. Air craft and satellite remote sensing can be used to record and assess the condition of these resources. Monitoring of environmental conditions is based on the observation and interpretation of certain landscape features. Although some forms of monitoring are continuous, resource monitoring from aircraft and satellite platforms is periodic in nature, with change being documented through a series of observations over a given span of time. This report summarizes the findings of a bibliographic search on the methods used to inventory and/or detect changes in wetland environments. The bibliography contains numerous citations and is not intended to be all-inclusive. Books, major journals, and symposium proceedings were examined. The findings documented will provide the potential user with a basic understanding of remote sensing technology as it is applied to wetland monitoring and trend analysis.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to develop a wetland identification tool that makes use of freely available geospatial datasets to identify potential wetland locations at a spatial scale relevant for transportation corridor assessments. The tool was developed to assist the Virginia Department of Transportation in wetland identification over large geographic regions. Wetland identification is an integral part of many construction projects performed by state departments of transportation. However, current methods for wetland identification in support of these activities are lacking in one or more of the following ways: inadequate use of ancillary data, little automation, failure to leverage freely available data, excessive computation times, high expense, or the requiring of software not typically available to state departments of transportation. This study addressed these limitations through development of a GIS-based wetland screening tool with freely available data and automated geoprocessing workflows to assist in wetland identification over large geographic regions. The tool was designed as a screening tool able to identify potential wetland areas that would require further investigation by a trained wetland identification expert. Therefore, the tool was designed to minimize false negatives: cases where the tool incorrectly designates wetland as non-wetland. Application of the tool to a study region with detailed wetland delineations showed that the tool correctly identified wetlands nearly 70% of the time, produced false positives 24% of the time, and produced false negatives only 6% of the time. The tool allows decision makers to adjust the sensitivity of the wetland identification algorithm in order to decrease false negatives at the expense of increasing the fraction of the study area identified as potential wetland. The tool, therefore, allows decision makers to balance trade-offs between the amount of area requiring more detailed wetland identification and the frequency with which wetland areas are misidentified by the screening tool as false negatives. Although the wetland identification tool was shown to be effective, future studies will be required to calibrate and validate the tool further using a broader range of application areas. The study recommends that this be done by way of additional corridor analyses to facilitate further improvements to the tool.

As society has become more aware of the values and functions of wetlands, so has the importance in conservation of these valuable resources. The objective of this study is to compare the accuracy of Remote Sensing/Geographic Information System (GIS) based functional assessment to the field based Hydrogeomorphic (HGM) approach. An accurate Remote Sensing/GIS based functional assessment can be valuable to those interested in wetland management as field work requires greater expense of labor, equipment, and time. Remote sensing models were developed for the Stephen F. Austin Experimental Forest using a combination of soil maps, soil information, QuickBird RTM multispectral satellite imagery, LiDAR derived Digital Elevation Model (DEM), and LiDAR derived Canopy Height Model. Each of the data layers was prepared in raster format and was recoded with low ratings as 1, medium ratings as 2, and high ratings as 3 in terms of its wetland function. A composite raster layer was created through pixel value addition. Then each pixel value total was divided by the highest possible value total to give the ratio pixel value as a Functional Capacity Index (FCI). The FCIs for each modeled function was then compared to the corresponding HGM field measured function FCIs for accuracy assessment. Use of the developed models is cautioned as the statistical results are mixed. All functions and function averages have significant positive correlations except for the Cycling of Nutrients, Detain Precipitation, and Maintenance of Plant Communities functions.
