SAR data, collected by aircraft and satellites during a series of oceanographic experiments, have been used to demonstrate the ability of this imaging remote sensor to measure water gravity waves in a variety of sea states. For example, wave refraction was successfully documented in the coastal regions near Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, using Seasat SAR satellite data. SAR has also been successfully used to measure internal gravity waves and long-period surf beats. Several parameters determine the visibility of gravity waves in SAR images: radar wavelengths and polarization, angle of incidence and radar look direction (relative to the wave propagation direction), as well as ocean wavelength, wave height, and wind speed and direction. In general, waves traveling toward or away from the SAR line of sight are more visible in the imagery than waves traveling perpendicular to the SAR line of sight. (Author).

Book excerpt: Modern airborne and spaceborne imaging radars, known as synthetic aperture radars (SARs), are capable of producing high-quality pictures of the earth's surface while avoiding some of the shortcomings of certain other forms of remote imaging systems. Primarily, radar overcomes the nighttime limitations of optical cameras, and the cloud- cover limitations of both optical and infrared imagers. In addition, because imaging radars use a form of coherent illumination, they can be used in certain special modes such as interferometry, to produce some unique derivative image products that incoherent systems cannot. One such product is a highly accurate digital terrain elevation map (DTEM). The most recent (ca. 1980) version of imaging radar, known as spotlight-mode SAR, can produce imagery with spatial resolution that begins to approach that of remote optical imagers. For all of these reasons, synthetic aperture radar imaging is rapidly becoming a key technology in the world of modern remote sensing. Much of the basic `workings' of synthetic aperture radars is rooted in the concepts of signal processing. Starting with that premise, this book explores in depth the fundamental principles upon which the spotlight mode of SAR imaging is constructed, using almost exclusively the language, concepts, and major building blocks of signal processing. Spotlight-Mode Synthetic Aperture Radar: A Signal Processing Approach is intended for a variety of audiences. Engineers and scientists working in the field of remote sensing but who do not have experience with SAR imaging will find an easy entrance into what can seem at times a very complicated subject. Experienced radar engineers will find that the book describes several modern areas of SAR processing that they might not have explored previously, e.g. interferometric SAR for change detection and terrain elevation mapping, or modern non-parametric approaches to SAR autofocus. Senior undergraduates (primarily in electrical engineering) who have had courses in digital signal and image processing, but who have had no exposure to SAR could find the book useful in a one-semester course as a reference.

Book excerpt: A critical issue in the design of large floating structures such as those being considered in the Mobile Offshore Base (MOB) effort currently being pursued by the U.S. Navy is the nature of the ocean-wave field viewed on scales of 2 km or more. Of prime concern is the ability to assess the spatial coherence of the wave field or the probability of occurrence of long, unbroken wave crests for various environmental conditions. This report describes an effort to use satellite-based synthetic-aperture radar images to determine the crest-length statistics for ocean waves. The first portion of the study examined the feasibility of using SAR image data to determine the crest length distribution, which was shown the be directly related to the directional spread of the spectrum. A fully nonlinear SAR model was used in a simulation study to assess the impact of imaging effects on the resulting measures. For the cases examined, the errors in estimated directional spread were generally less than 20-30% and were conservative when the SAR look direction was within 200 of the propagation direction. The errors were shown to increase with increasing significant wave height, increasing directional spread, and increasing angle between the wave propagation direction and the SAR look direction. The second portion of the study developed a methodology to estimate the wave spectrum directly from the SAR-image spectrum via a variational inversion procedure. The methodology was successful, and the results from ERS SAR data indicate that errors in spectral parameters such as the mean wave length and directional spread are strongly dependent on the signal to noise ratio, as measured by the peak image spectral density. Errors become large when the peak spectral density falls below about 10 sq m for ERS SAR data. Above this level, estimates of wave length arid directional spread are accurate to within about 10-20%.

Book excerpt: The study presented in this work examines the use of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) on-board the first European Remote Sensing Satellite (ERS-1) for the measurement of wind waves and discusses its applications such as wave data assimilation and inverse modelling. Over four years of directional measurements acquired by a heave-pitch-roll buoy moored in tropical deep waters around 150 km offshore are employed to investigate the mechanisms of SAR wave imaging and the retrievals of wave spectra from SAR images. For the first time the most widely implemented Max-Planck Institut (MPI) SAR Wave Mode retrieval scheme was assessed through detailed statistical intercomparisons and selected qualitative validations against directional buoy data and against the third generation wave model WAM data, which was used as first guess to the inversion. The performance of the WAM model, the ECMWF Atmospheric Model and of the Maximum Entropy Method for the retrieval of the buoy directional spectrum are also discussed through several cross-validation exercises.

Book excerpt: Spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has been demonstrated invaluable in observing the global ocean winds and waves. SAR images acquired by multiple sensors are employed, including Sentinel-1(S-1), Envisat/ASAR, Gaofen-3 and Radarsat-2. This thesis reviews the commonly used SAR parameters (NRCS and azimuth cutoff) in the first part. A series of calibration steps are required to obtain a proper NRCS and assessment of NRCS is carried out for S-1wave mode (WV). It turns out that WV is poorly calibrated and is thus re-calibrated to obtain accurate NRCS. Azimuth cut off is demonstrated to be complementary to NRCS and can account for the sea state impact on the wind retrieval. Based on the available fully polarimetric SAR products, azimuth cut off is found to vary greatly with polarizations. The present SAR mapping transformation is sufficient to interpret the co-polarized azimuth cut off, while not for the cross-polarization. With the limitations of SAR imaging in mind, a new parameter is proposed and defined based on the SAR image cross-spectra, termed as MACS. The imaginary part of MACS is found to be a signed quantity relative to the wind direction. Given this dependence, an independent wind retrieval algorithm is expected to benefit. The magnitude of MACS is able to aid for estimate of modulation function of SAR mapping. In addition, MACS also gives promising results regarding the global wave studies. The global signatures of MACS at various wave lengths are well representative of the winds distributions, spatially and seasonally. MACS of long waves shows greater values over the storm tracks while the shorter waves are mostly within the trader winds. These results are expected to help evaluate the model outputs and complement further studies of the global wave spectral climate. Data continuity in the coming 10 years shall extend the study towards longer duration.
