IFC, and more recently, other multilateral, bilateral, and export credit institutions have played a strong suportive role in bringing project finance to its current volumes. This role was highlighted in 1998, when these institutions sustained flows of an estimated $25 billion at a time when there was an abrupt decline in some types of private flows. IFC, in particular, was a pioneer of project finance in developing countries and has a unique depth of experience in this field, which spans more than 40 years in the practical implementation of some 2000 projects, many of them on a limited-recourse basis. Particularly in today's marketplace, IFC's ability to mobilize finance (both loan and equity for its own account and syndicated loans under its B-loan program), the strength of iis project appraisal capabilities, and its experience in structuring complex transactions in difficult environments have been reassuring to other participants and important to the successful financing of many projects. This report draws on IFC's experience in more than 230 greenfield projects costing upward of $30 billion that relied on project finance on a limited-recourse basis (see Appendix A). It opens with a brief description of the major international trends in project finance over the past two decades and then turns to the essential ingredients of successful project financing."--Publisher abstract.

Book excerpt: Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 105, University of Siena, course: MSc in Finance, language: English, abstract: Project Finance approach is an important financing mechanism because of its intrinsic features and differences with respect to the conventional corporate finance. It has experienced a rapid development and growth in the last decades both in developed and developing countries. The aim of this dissertation is to study and deepen the Project Finance in Emerging Markets framework. After a brief introduction of the main general features of this approach, it will focus on the developing countries context: the historical evolution overview, the risks evaluation, the international institutions involved and the economic impact of project finance in this scenario. Furthermore, financial feasibility study will be conducted in order to evaluate a project over several financial and economic aspects. Finally, all these theoretical issues will be empirically applied to the PMESA case study. It regards a hydroelectric power plant built in Brazil in the early 2000s through the project finance approach. The project evaluation is time located in these years because Brazil was considered an emerging market and it presented some peculiar economic and financial characteristics.

It presents the major changes in the attitudes and orientations of these financiers as they have entered a competitive environment seeking opportunities to do more business in the energy sector of developing countries. For every good energy project, there is a financier somewhere. However, creating an attractive project package requires an explicit understanding of the following: availability of soft loans, credits, grants, tied and untied loans; objectives, tendencies, and requirements of various financiers; possibilities of combining various financial instruments; methods of economic, financial, and risk analysis and mitigation. The reader is guided through the process of understanding the fundamentals of project financing, getting to know the financiers, and developing an acceptable project package. Finally, some real-world case studies demonstrate the intricacies of mobilizing funds for projects in various segments of the energy sector.

The book is aimed at a business savvy audience, but one which is not necessarily up to speed on the concept, and has a global reach by covering both OECD countries and the emerging markets. Project finance is positioned at a key point between the global capital markets and the energy and infrastructure industries. To explain and illustrate the ideas behind project finance, the book is made of chapters written by a range of leading players in the market from around the world and is split into four sections: ¢ The first reviews various themes and issues key to the project finance market - views from bankers, lawyers and advisers plus chapters on bank, bond and multilateral finance and a look at environmental, insurance and construction market issues. ¢ The second section looks at how project finance is used in various sectors of the energy and infrastructure market - renewable energy, oil and gas, mining, PPPs and roads and transportation. ¢The third then takes an in-depth look at various projects finance markets from around the world - Australia, Vietnam, Indonesia, India, Turkey, Russia, Africa, France, USA and Brazil. ¢ Finally, the fourth section presents a series of Top 10 deal cases studies from the pages of Thomson Reuters Project Finance International (PFI), the leading source of global project finance information.

Book excerpt: This overview of project finance for the oil and gas industry covers financial markets, sources and providers of finance, financial structures, and capital raising processes. About US$300 billion of project finance debt is raised annually across several capital intensive sectors—including oil and gas, energy, infrastructure, and mining—and the oil and gas industry represents around 30% of the global project finance market. With over 25 year’s project finance experience in international banking and industry, author Robert Clews explores project finance techniques and their effectiveness in the petroleum industry. He highlights the petroleum industry players, risks, economics, and commercial/legal arrangements. With petroleum industry projects representing amongst the largest industrial activities in the world, this book ties together concepts and tools through real examples and aims to ensure that project finance will continue to play a central role in bringing together investors and lenders to finance these ventures. Combines the theory and practice of raising long-term funding for capital intensive projects with insights about the appeal of project finance to the international oil and gas industry Includes case studies and examples covering projects in the Arctic, East Africa, Latin America, North America, and Australia Emphasizes the full downstream value chain of the industry instead of limiting itself to upstream and pipeline project financing Highlights petroleum industry players, risks, economics, and commercial and legal arrangements

The International Finance Corporation (IFC), which has been involved in the financing of infrastructure projects for nearly three decades, has played an active role in these developments. To date, the Corporation has undertaken the financing of nearly 90 such projects in 26 developing countries, many of them in only the past few years. Its pipeline on new infrastructure projects has moreover continued to grow rapidly. This paper reviews the preliminary lessons emerging from IFC's experience with infrastructure financing in the developing world.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper has the purpose of analyzing the role of civil society in funding and providing infrastructure projects in developing countries. Considering that local associations around the world have been directly engaged on some infrastructure projects - some scholars define it as “semi-formal finance” - the intention is to demonstrate that the experiences on such arrangements in developing countries have been responsible for fostering infrastructure investments in the poorer regions where the government is more absent. Based upon legal, economic and social aspects, this paper aims to contribute to a broader debate for the development of infrastructure in emerging countries. Therefore, the introduction deals with new approaches in public administration, as well as the actual broader concept of privatization. Next, I assume that the Third Sector has a great role in this process, but the current regulation in Brazil serves to prevent such arrangements. In the last section, the objective is to argue that civil society, even without the help of organized entities such NGOs, may have a strong role on such semi-formal finance arrangements in Brazil: in many developing countries, informal arrangements were responsible for boost small infrastructures in poor regions. The conclusion is that, under a more social approach, the legal and economic mechanisms in developing countries are able to consider such arrangements in the benefit of their development. In this context, it raises the possibility of civil society provision in small and specific public infrastructure projects, in order to match demands that are not provided by the state (or provided unsatisfactorily). So, local projects in several areas may emerge as alternatives to satisfy these small demands. This type of funding by a semi-formal sector is conceived especially in developing countries, where the states are not self-sufficient in their public duties. Latin America - and specially Brazil - is more connected to this concept due to its uniformity in key public policy issues and the respective state's failure with the direct provision, so that it is a proposal to be considered by the region for reducing the existing economic and social disparities.

Book excerpt: Many infrastructure projects around the world are funded through the project finance method, which combines private financing with public sector backing from multilateral finance institutions such as the World Bank. This examination of the theoretical and practical implications of such funding begins with a discussion of the relationship between the financial structuring of these projects and finance, policy and legal disciplines, especially in the form of investment law, human rights and environmental law. A number of case studies are then examined to provide practical insights into the application (or otherwise) of human rights and sustainable development objectives within such projects. While these theoretical perspectives do not conclude that the project finance method detracts from the application or implementation of human rights and sustainable development objectives, they do highlight the potential for the prioritisation of investment returns at the expense of human rights and environmental protection standards.
