Book excerpt: School counselors are challenged with creating a wide range of programs to address three developmental domains: personal/social, career, and academic, with an increasing requirement to provide accurate and sufficient data substantiating their professional contributions to students' academic achievement. At the same time, the professional literature reports that during adolescence there is a documented decline in academic motivation for an alarming percent of students. As a result, at-risk students are often referred to school counselors with a brief comment, capable but unmotivated. Such referrals leave school counselors in want of strategies to enhance students' motivation for academic success. Finding a strategy that is effective with a diverse student caseload, enhances a counselor's efficiency and overall impact on students' achievement and successful school completion, which ultimately benefits students and society. Such a strategy, Motivational Interviewing (MI) was developed as a client-centered method for therapeutic work with addictive behaviors. Motivational Interviewing attempts to promote behavior change by building intrinsic motivation, through amplifying and clarifying discrepancies between a client's behaviors and values or goals. Literature from counseling and education suggests that MI may have applications over a variety of counseling settings. A literature review discusses concerns related to student achievement, describes motivation as a primary component of academic achievement, documents a need for interventions that improve the academic motivation of adolescents, provides information on the new vision for school counseling programs, emphasizes the challenges faced by counselors working with academically unmotivated students, describes MI as an intervention strategy, and suggests that MI may be appropriately used with adolescents in academic settings. A multiple baseline research study attempted to identify if capable, yet underachieving students could enhance their academic motivation and academic success by participating in Motivational Interviewing sessions. Results of this study documented that for two of the three participants, work production increased after MI sessions.

Book excerpt: School counselors have potential to make significant gains in closing the achievement gap for all students as advocated for by the American School Counseling Association. School counseling is moving away from the no-model model of services delivery that places counselors at the whim of principals, parents and teachers who traditionally define counseling duties according to their needs. Instead, it is moving toward a school counseling framework advocated for by national and state organizations. A core concept of these frameworks is the use of evidence-based practices to meet the needs of all learners. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based counseling practice developed to assist with resolution of ambivalence and behavior change. Researched throughout the world in a variety of settings from the health professions to prisons, the results show promise in MI for assisting with behavior change in both adult and adolescent populations. MI training is currently available to school counselors at conferences, school district trainings and through self-study. There is little research on the efficacy of MI and school counseling training and implementation. The purpose of this dissertation is to produce two manuscripts related to school counseling and MI. Using a concurrent multiple baseline design, this study focused on the impact of MI feedback and coaching supervision of school counseling graduate students (N=3) with previous beginning MI training in a two day workshop. The hypothesis stated that subsequent feedback and coaching supervision improved school counseling graduate the percentage of MI adherent behavior on the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI 3.1). The global rating scores increased with feedback and coaching supervision and the participants moved from levels of beginning MI competency to proficiency in their mean scores. Participants did not, however, increase the percentage of MI adherent behavior. These score began high and remained high throughout the 10 week duration of the research. Implications for this study include highlighting the importance of feedback and coaching supervision for school counseling graduate students wanting to increase beginning MI skills, and it marks the beginning of research on training and implementing MI in school counseling programs.

Behaviour change is, in effect, reliant upon the individual's motivation. Change is motivated by a perceived discrepancy between present beliefs and important personal goals or values. Overall, it is the student who is responsible for choosing and carrying out the change. Using Motivational Interviewing with Young People In the school context concerns regarding an individual student's behaviour may well have come from a third part, for example, a parent, teacher, mentor. The young person concerned may not be motivated to change his behaviour and may not share the same aspirations or goals as these concerned adults. This resource is consequently aimed at students in order to encourage them to explore their own patterns of behaviour and to further develop an understanding of the change process and the benefits it might bring. The programme introduces students to MI and the basic Motivational Interviewing skills: 1. Open-ended questions. 2. Reflective listening. 3. Reframing. 4. Developing discrepancy. 5. Looking forward. The programme is both educational and therapeutic in design. However, this group of students often receives limited if any targeted supports in schools because they tend to perform well academically (Suldo, O'Brennan, Storey, & Shaunessy-Dedrick, 2018). To address this gap in literature, this study investigated the efficacy of a targeted intervention in development to support academic and emotional success among students in accelerated curricula, namely the Motivation, Assessment, and Planning (MAP) intervention. MAP involves up to two one-on-one coaching sessions rooted in Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques. The intervention aims to help students in accelerated curricula further develop coping or engagement strategies learned in an accompanying universal intervention termed the Advancing Coping and Engagement program (ACE; Suldo, Parker, Shaunessy-Dedrick, & OBrennan, 2019). In this study, the efficacy of the MAP intervention was compared to an Action Planning (AP) intervention through a randomized, within subject design. Twenty 9th grade students taking Advanced Placement Human Geography from one high school who exhibited emotional and/or academic risks participated in this study. Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test revealed that participants reported significantly higher importance to change (S = 35.5, N = 20, p = 0.04) after receiving MAP compared to AP intervention. Many students, for various reasons, have minimal motivation for school evidenced by little persistence and little effort expended at school. This investigation examined the effect of counseling on academic motivation and achievement. Participants were seven 7th and 8th grade middle school students who were identified as students who lacked motivation. The Children's Academic Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (CAIMI) (Gottfried, 1986) was used to confirm that motivation was an issue for student participants. Each student completed a minimum of 11 counseling sessions over a 13-week research period. Results for each student are reported. Support was found for the hypothesis that motivation and self-efficacy would increase through the counseling process and as a result, grades, and in some instances attendance, would improve. Limitations of the study are discussed and suggestions for the direction of school counseling programs are presented.

The benefits and limitations of the program were examined based on teacher and student perceptions, analysis of survey data, and field observations. -- The four research questions that guided the study were as follows: (1) what are the contextual issues that warrant an academic acceleration program for middle school-aged students; (2) what resources does this school system possess that enable it to provide an academic acceleration program for middle school-aged students; (3) is the Back-On-Track program following its design as planned; and (4) what is the impact of the Back-On-Track program on student attitude, motivation, and student academic self-perception? -- Analysis of the data indicated that students and teachers overall felt that the program for overaged eighth graders was an asset to the school system and provided a much needed avenue for grade acceleration for students who were off track for expected graduation. The director, teachers, and students felt the district provided the necessary resources for the program. While the students and program personnel revealed that the program followed its plan as designed and communicated to them, teachers at the home school admitted unfamiliarity with the details of the program's plan. Both teachers and students alike presented qualitative agreement that the program had a positive impact on student attitude, motivation, and academic self-perception. Regarding self-motivation, a significant statistical difference was shown between the pre and postsurvey administrations indicating an increase in self-motivation after attending the Back-On-Track program.
