Book excerpt: Determining the distribution of a species is an important component in understanding the history of a species and determining where future conservation efforts may lead. The geographic distribution of a species can be shaped by several factors such as environmental changes, interspecies competition, and hybridization. In Kentucky, an area of cohabitation occurs between the northern leopard frog (Rana pipiens), which is a species of special concern in Kentucky, and the southern leopard frog (R. sphenocephala), which is a relatively common species in the state. The distributions of these two species are not completely clear due to their similarity in morphology and possibility of hybridization, thus, the use of genetic markers for identification of these species is necessary. The mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene was sequenced for 169 individuals from 37 populations spanning the species range overlap in Kentucky, along with 1 locality in Ohio and 1 locality in Tennessee. Haplotype networking and maximum parsimony analyses separated individuals into 3 unresolved clades. The R.pipiensGROUP included individuals from Ohio and the northernmost counties of Kentucky, which are nested in the R. pipiens range. The R.sphenocephalaGROUP included individuals from Tennessee and the southwest counties of Kentucky, which are nested in the R. sphenocephala range. The R.palustrisGROUP included both pickerel frogs (R.palustris), and individuals with a leopard frog morphology from counties located in central Kentucky. Discrepencies between morphological identification and genotype between pickerel frogs and leopard frogs suggest a genetic interaction. Further genetic analysis of a more variable fragment of the mtDNA, along with greater sampling across the species' range edges may help explain this phenomenon.

At that time, we were engaged in writing a joint paper on potential structuring mechanisms in helminth communities; we disagreed on a number of issues. After consider able discussion about the need, scope and the inevitable limitations of such a symposium, we decided that the time was ripe to bring other ecologists, engaged in similar research, face-to-face. There were many individuals from whom to choose; we selected those who were actively publishing on helminth communities or those who had expertise in areas which we felt were particularly appropriate. We compiled a list of potential participants, contacted them and received unanimous support to organize such a symposium. Our intent was to cover several broad areas, fully recognizing that breadth negates depth (at least with a publisher's limitation on the number of pages). We felt it important to consider patterns amongst different kinds of hosts because this is where we had disagreed among ourselves.
