Book excerpt: "Occupational stress is documented as a major factor that leads to decreased productivity, morale, and burnout of nurses. The routine daily caring for critically ill patients, participating with families in end-of-life decisions, resuscitative efforts, deaths, and interrelationships with coworkers are basic factors that add to everyday stress in the life of a nurse in the intensive care environment. Nurses work in a demanding environment where they are repetitively exposed to traumatic situations and stressful events. Over time, these stressful events can build up causing negative effects on efficiency of patient care, customer service, turnover, cost to the hospital, nursing morale, and nursing retention. Studies have shown that depression, alcohol and drug use, and suicidal ideation are serious concerns among health care professionals (Witt Sherman, 2004). There are often relatively informal resources for nurses and health care workers who are coping with the extremes of sadness and grief they might experience after traumatic events. The nurses' code of conduct states that nurses should be aware of and, where necessary, take action to protect colleagues' health and safety; thus it is recognized that some form of support is needed yet there is little evidence that support groups are regularly provided (Spencer, 1994). It is essential that a practice of support should be supported organizationally. When resources are properly utilized and healthcare providers feel that it is acceptable and appropriate to grieve, they will be able to do so in their own manner and at their own time, knowing that they are cared for and supported by the health care system (Brosche, 2007). A formal interdisciplinary team can help guide and inspire nurses to transform grow, and blossom in body and spirit. The initiation of a critical incident stress management team at an acute care tertiary hospital benefits the staff in that it encourages the employee to seek help during critical incidents that affect normal coping mechanisms of an individual pulling forth a sense of empowerment, dignity, and respect." -- Abstract.
