Book excerpt: Many techniques have been used in an attempt to prevent reflection cracking in asphalt overlays including stress relieving membranes, fabrics, bond breakers, and changes in mix design. Glass fiber reinforcements have been used in the plastics industry for increasing the fatigue life and fracture toughness of plastic products for many years. This paper describes the successful development of the use of glass fiber reinforcement in conjunction with an asphalt polymer to minimize reflection cracks in an asphalt overlay. The system is also used to reduce excavation of deteriorated cracks and joints before overlaying.

Book excerpt: Fabric reinforcement was used in an attempt to prevent reflection cracking of two bituminous concrete layers overlying an 8-inch plain (unreinforced, unjointed) concrete base that was underlain by a portland cement stabilized subbase material. On these pavements it was expected that the extremely rigid base and subbase layers would reduce vertical motion to a minimum. Similar pavements constructed with no overlay reinforcement readily showed reflection cracking in the bituminous layers, presumably because of horizontal, thermally induced movements of shrinkage cracks in the concrete base.

Book excerpt: Prevention or control of reflection cracks in asphaltic concrete overlays has been a problem from the inception of this type of construction. The many different treatments that have been tried in an effort to solve this problem are: (1) reinforcement within and below the overlay, (2) bond breakers, (3) stress-relieving layers, (4) asphalt-mix additives, and (5) placement of fabrics between the existing pavement and the overlay. At the present time, no treatment has been tried that will completely prevent the formation of reflection cracks. Some treatments do delay the formation of cracks, while others do not appear to help at all. Indications are that fabrics do have some beneficial effects, such as a moisture barrier, even though the overlays develop reflection cracks. The fabrics that have been tried for the control of reflection cracks included: (1) Petromat, (2) Bidim, (3) Typar, (4) Cerex, (5) Mirafi, (6) Structofors, (7) Bituthene, (8) Protecto-Wrap, and (9) Fiberglass. Asphalt-rubber interlayers, as formulated by the Arizona Refining Company and the Sahuaro Petroleum Company, show promise in retarding reflection cracks. (Author).

Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to pavement designers, maintenance engineers, and others interested in methods and procedures for reducing reflection cracking of asphalt overlays. Information is provided on the use of paving fabrics and membranes in pavement rehabilitation. Reflection cracking of pavement overlays results in decreased pavement performance with respect to ride quality, structural support, skid resistance, and safety. The use of fabrics is one of the alternatives that are available to reduce or delay reflection cracking. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the experiences of agencies in the use of fabrics and membranes for reduction of reflection cracking.

Book excerpt: To approach the reflection cracking problem in asphalt concrete (AC) overlays systematically the properties of the materials intended to be used in an interlayer stress absorbing composite (ISAC) system were first identified. Various thermal/structural models and laboratory equipment were used for this purpose. A number of woven and nonwoven geotextiles were selected and tested for their engineering properties such as tensile strength, initial modulus, modulus at failure, and percent shrinkage. Several samples of rubber asphalt were prepared by blending different ratios of crumb rubber with various types and ratios of asphalt cements at 400 deg F. These rubber asphalts were tested at different temperatures and the effects of temperature and rate of deformation on their stiffness were evaluated. An ISAC layer was fabricated in the laboratory using the materials considered appropriate. Testing equipment was developed to evaluate the interfacial shear strength and laboratory testing was performed to determine the shear strength of the fabricated ISAC layer under an AC overlay. The ISAC layer was evaluated for its effectiveness against reflection cracking. A laboratory pavement section with an AC overlay over a jointed portland cement concrete slab was constructed and placed in an environmental chamber. A mechanical device was used to simulate thermal strain in the slab and the joint was opened and closed at an extremely slow rate. The testing was conducted at 30 deg F and deterioration in the overlay was monitored using a sensitive LVDT device. The results from the laboratory evaluation testing program indicated that the ISAC layer was highly effective in preventing reflection cracking in a 2.5-in. AC overlay. When compared to a control test section and a section using a commercially available reflection cracking control material, the ISAC layer provided for superior performance. A field pavement test section utilizing the ISAC layer was constructed in the Summer of 1994 and field evaluation is ongoing.

Book excerpt: This report encompasses the results of a literature search, a survey of state highway departments, and an on-site field inspection of techniques used by state and federal agencies to control reflection cracking in asphaltic concrete overlays principally on portland cement concrete pavements. Procedures were generally for the purpose of isolating the overlay from the effect of movement in the underlying pavement or reinforcing the overlay. These procedures are made more effective by measures designed to prevent or minimize the underlying pavement movement. The methods found helpful in reducing reflection cracking include wire mesh reinforcement in the asphaltic concrete (AC) overlay; use of bond-breakers between the portland cement concrete (PCC) and the AC overlay; addition of an aggregate base course over the PCC followed by an AC overlay; pretreatment of the old PCC, such as mudjacking, subsealing, or cracking the old pavement by heavy rolling or with a hydraulic or pneumatic hammer; use of additives and other modifications in the AC composition. Many of the test installations inspected are 3 to 13 years old and in good to excellent condition. Normally, when using regular AC overlay procedures, reflection cracking begins to show up within 1 year or season cycle and cracks are larger than when special techniques are used. Results of the study indicate that there is no known 100% effective method for eliminating reflection cracking. Overall, a number of techniques have substantially delayed serious transverse reflection cracking, appear to have reduced longitudinal reflection cracking at pavement widening joints, and have reduced maintenance considerably. Book excerpt: One of the shortcomings of asphalt concrete (AC) overlays is the eventual occurrence of reflective cracking. Reflective cracks are fractures in the overlay that occur because of excessive movement of cracks and joints in the underlying pavement layers. Without some form of prevention or reduction of these reflective cracks, early deterioration of an asphalt overlay can occur. The asphalt rubber and geotextile interlayers are used to prevent and reduce reflective cracks and to act as a waterproofing medium when overlaying structurally sound AC and portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements with AC in warm, dry climates. The description, applicability, benefits, limitations, costs, recommended uses, and location of demonstration sites for asphalt rubber and geotextile interlayer technology are discussed.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hot mix asphalt (HMA) is used as the primary overlying material of concrete pavements during rehabilitation because of its inexpensive nature when compared to most Portland cement concrete (PCC) rehabilitation/reconstruction alternatives. However, due to the majority of the PCC pavements being in average to poor condition, many HMA overlays are exposed to extreme movements (both vertical and horizontal). The combination of associated load and environmentally induced movements creates complex stresses and strains in the vicinity of expansion joints and cracks in the PCC, thus dramatically reducing the life of the HMA overlay, typically in the form of reflective cracking. Reflective cracking is a fatigue cracking distress, which is initiated at the bottom of the HMA overlay and propagates to the surface. When the crack reaches the HMA overlay surface, not only does it affect the ride quality and overall integrity of the pavement surface, but it also creates a path for which water can migrate down into and below the PCC layer. This can ultimately reduce the overall structural support of the composite (HMA and PCC) pavement and result in a complete pavement failure. Medium to high severity reflective cracking results in poor surface conditions that could lead to poor driving conditions and higher accident rates. Therefore, this research is timely in that it not only addresses the structural integrity of the pavement system, but also the safety of the driving public, which is one of the main objectives of the administration at state agencies. To better understand the mechanisms associated with the development of reflective cracking, an extensive literature review was conducted. Analysis of the literature review indicated significant gaps in the current state of the practice in using bituminous overlays on PCC pavements. To fill in these gaps, a survey was developed, distributed to the state transportation agencies of all fifty states, and compiled to better define the scope of the research. The survey clearly identified that a major gap in the current state of the practice is linking the field conditions (climate, deflections, traffic levels) to appropriate laboratory testing protocols. Therefore, field test sections were selected with appropriate field forensic testing and traffic collection. During construction of the bituminous overlays, loose mix was collected and brought back to the laboratory for material characterization testing that would simulate the loading conditions associated with the respective test section. The research conducted during the development of this thesis has led to a rational approach in the prediction of reflective cracking potential in HMA overlays placed on PCC pavements. This methodology utilizes field forensic information that would normally be collected during the evaluation of the PCC/composite pavement prior to rehabilitation and laboratory fatigue and stiffness characterization of the HMA mixture(s), to predict the potential for reflective cracking in the bituminous overlay mixture(s). The extensive laboratory testing and field calibration/verification information utilized in the research has also led to "decision tree" methodology that would allow state agencies to properly select asphalt mixtures for overlaying PCC pavements.
