Book excerpt: The M1 carbine is a .30-caliber, semiautomatic rifle that first appeared in 1942 as a standard firearm for the US military during World War II. It was later used by US forces in the Korean and Vietnam Wars and continues to see worldwide use to this day. Produced in several variants by many manufacturers, it was and is still widely used not only by military forces, but by paramilitary and police units worldwide. Its design, construction, and variants--including the M1A1, M2, and M3--are shown in superb period photography and clear, up-close color images. Accessories such as magazines, ammunition, belts, pouches, and cleaning kits are featured throughout the book, as well as rarely seen World War II-related uniform and equipment items.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1938 the US Chief of Infantry requested that the Ordnance Department develop a carbine to be used by service and support troops, artillerymen, machine-gun crews, tankers, mortar crews and other troops not needing the power of the M1 Garand rifle. The development of this new weapon was given an added impetus by Germany's successful use of airborne and glider troops early on in World War II. This caused a fear amongst US officers that troops normally considered 'behind the lines' personnel might have to fight elite German troops and would therefore require a more effective weapon than their standard pistols. The resulting M1 Carbine was a not a shortened version of the standard service rifle but instead a brand-new design chambering a new cartridge. Eventually numerous manufacturers would combine to produce over six million M1 Carbines before the end of the war. This book charts the complete story of the weapon, from its design, to its operational history and its impact upon warfare.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • SELECTED BY THE ECONOMIST AS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR “A rambunctious book that is itself alive with the animal spirits of the marketplace.”—The Wall Street Journal Freedom’s Forge reveals how two extraordinary American businessmen—General Motors automobile magnate William “Big Bill” Knudsen and shipbuilder Henry J. Kaiser—helped corral, cajole, and inspire business leaders across the country to mobilize the “arsenal of democracy” that propelled the Allies to victory in World War II. Drafting top talent from companies like Chrysler, Republic Steel, Boeing, Lockheed, GE, and Frigidaire, Knudsen and Kaiser turned auto plants into aircraft factories and civilian assembly lines into fountains of munitions. In four short years they transformed America’s army from a hollow shell into a truly global force, laying the foundations for the country’s rise as an economic as well as military superpower. Freedom’s Forge vividly re-creates American industry’s finest hour, when the nation’s business elites put aside their pursuit of profits and set about saving the world. Praise for Freedom’s Forge “A rarely told industrial saga, rich with particulars of the growing pains and eventual triumphs of American industry . . . Arthur Herman has set out to right an injustice: the loss, down history’s memory hole, of the epic achievements of American business in helping the United States and its allies win World War II.”—The New York Times Book Review “Magnificent . . . It’s not often that a historian comes up with a fresh approach to an absolutely critical element of the Allied victory in World War II, but Pulitzer finalist Herman . . . has done just that.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “A compulsively readable tribute to ‘the miracle of mass production.’ ”—Publishers Weekly “The production statistics cited by Mr. Herman . . . astound.”—The Economist “[A] fantastic book.”—Forbes “Freedom’s Forge is the story of how the ingenuity and energy of the American private sector was turned loose to equip the finest military force on the face of the earth. In an era of gathering threats and shrinking defense budgets, it is a timely lesson told by one of the great historians of our time.”—Donald Rumsfeld

Download or read book U.S. Carbine, Caliber .30, M1 Field Manual written by War Department and published by . This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States Carbine, Caliber .30, M1 is a lightweight, semi-automatic longarm that became a standard firearm for the U.S. military during World War II. It was widely used by U.S. and foreign military, police forces, and has also been a popular civilian firearm. The first M1 carbines were delivered in mid-1942, with priority given to troops in Europe. The M1 was highly praised for its small size, light weight and firepower, especially by troops who were unable to use a full size rifle as their primary weapon. The .30 Carbine cartridge was adequate in both muzzle energy and muzzle velocity. The .30 Carbine had a round-nose 110 gr bullet, in contrast to the spitzer bullet designs found in most full power rifle cartridges of the WWII era. A total of over 6.5 million M1 carbines and variants were manufactured, making it the most popular small arm for the American military during World War II.Created in 1942, this field manual reveals a great deal about the M1's design and capabilities. Intended as a manual for those charged with operation, it details many strategies for attaining outstanding marksmanship. Originally labeled restricted, this manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.

Book Synopsis The Bandy Family in America by : Dale Bandy
Download or read book The Bandy Family in America written by Dale Bandy and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-06 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bandy Family in America is the culmination of 118 years of family research. The story begins with the first references to American Bandys in the 1600s. Bandys helped establish one American colony and died fighting in the American Revolution. These and dozens of other stories are unveiled as we follow the Bandy family across America and through the centuries. We meet the famous, the almost famous, and the infamous. The villains and heroes. The murderers and the murdered. The moonshiners and the bootleggers. There are the stories of the often-convicted tax evader and Indian Territory shoot-out in Bandy's Saloon that both end in the United States Supreme Court. Find the names of Bandys who fought in the American Revolution and Civil War and the names of those who died in World War II and Vietnam. We have been barbers, bar owners, blacksmiths, bookkeepers, carpenters, clerks, coal miners, coaches, farmers, inmates, judges, legislators, mechanics, mineralogists, physicians, prisoners, sailors, soldiers, sheriffs, school superintendents, seamstresses, servants, steam railroad engineers, stenographers, teachers, teamsters, and waitresses. We worked on the railroads, brewed famous beer, plowed fields, spun flax, fought wars, and made music. There are extraordinary stories of Bandy marriages. One lasted over 75 years. Another produced 17 children. A 12-year old bride-to-be waited two years for her just divorced husband-to-be to be to get out of prison. A 62-year old Civil War veteran married a 12-year old bride. An alcoholic husband, shot and wounded by the police, recovered only to be fatally shot by his wife. An eccentric millionaire married in his sixties, but his bride wasn't after his money. And there was my ancestor Bigamous Bill Bandy. This edition is written with the benefit of computer technology and DNA evidence which enabled me to extend the story back to times where few documents recorded relationships. Now we have evidence that links multiple family stretching family ties back to the colonial era. Because of issues with file size, this edition is printed in two volumes
