Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Urdu Teacher Acquiring a knowledge of a foreign language is beyond doubt a long and arduous study, but to the intelligent, observant student it ought to be at least one of the most interesting, for it cannot be denied that knowledge of any one lan guage means an intimate knowledge of the people speaking that language. Are there any more interesting peoples than your Aryan brethren of to-day, scions of that great and common ancestor who tn the dim unrecorded long ago strode as conquering hero where you now stand, as the, representatives of the greatest sovereign that ever held sway Over India P What a vista is opened up when we think of what has happened between then and now You can take it that every Englishman speaking the Vernacular, forcibly reminds the Native of India of thatcommon Origin, helps him to welcome as a blessing the return of the Elder Brother after his long sojourn in the West, and mme than anything I know of, serves to foster respect on both sides. With all its faults, I hope my little work Will assist you in obtaining a knowledge of this great Vernacular. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Lessons in Urdu This little book, like my "First Lessons in Hindi," has been written to supply a need. It is intended to help those who have to study Urdu in the Persian character from the beginning, and, for this reason, in the Exercises, Vocabularies, and Grammatical Notes, that character has been used; a transliteration into Roman characters being added, as such a transliteration will be found useful to beginners. At the same time those who wish, at this stage, to learn to use only Roman-Urdu will find the book useful. The Grammatical Notes are only introductory and elementary, as it is hoped that the student of this book will go forward to more extensive and profounder works. They will, it is to be hoped, lead up to Platts's "Hindustani Grammar," Kempson's "Syntax and Idioms of Hindustani," and other works of a more advanced character. The Vocabulary used is that of the simplest kind of Urdu, such as will be found helpful in acquiring the language of everyday life. Having laid a foundation of this kind, the student will find himself able to begin speaking the language, a most important factor in acquiring a sound and accurate knowledge of Urdu. Reading, writing and speaking should be cultivated simultaneously, or the student will perhaps find himself able to read intelligently, to discuss points of Grammar, and yet be unable to express his thoughts with fluency and accuracy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar of the Urdu or Hindustani Language In this work I have availed myself of the labours of my predecessors, and I fully re cognize my Obligations; but with their rules I have embodied the results of my own study and observation. In a few instances I have ventured to differ from those who have gone before me, but more has been done II]. The way of addition and classification, and in the drawing of distino tions. Many things have been noticed which hitherto have been passed over unperceived, or as being, perhaps, as Forbes says, plain and self-evident. I have not allowed this last con sideration to weigh with me; what is plain and self-evident to one student may not be so to another; and it is hardly competent for one who knows the language to determine what points are SO clear and manifest that no student will ever require to be told them. It may be im possible to produce a perfect Grammar; but the smallest matters should be included in it, as well as the greatest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mountain School-Teacher The leaves fallen from the hickories, under the touch of waning summer, took on now, by the magic of this sun, golden tones of red and yellow. Woodpeckers hammered on the great trees along this path. Insects moved between the branches, the wild bee, the hornet, the yel low butterfly, as though the aerial life of the woods had been drawn here to the sun. Book excerpt: This volume explores and calls into question certain commonly held assumptions about writing and technological advancement in the Islamic tradition. In particular, it challenges the idea that mechanical print naturally and inevitably displaces handwritten texts as well as the notion that the so-called transition from manuscript to print is unidirectional. Indeed, rather than distinct technologies that emerge in a progressive series (one naturally following the other), they frequently co-exist in complex and complementary relationships – relationships we are only now starting to recognize and explore. The book brings together essays by internationally recognized scholars from an array of disciplines (including philology, linguistics, religious studies, history, anthropology, and typography) whose work focuses on the written word – channeled through various media – as a social and cultural phenomenon within the Islamic tradition. These essays promote systematic approaches to the study of Islamic writing cultures writ large, in an effort to further our understanding of the social, cultural and intellectual relationships between manuscripts, printed texts and the people who use and create them.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Urdu Manual by the Phonetic Inductive Method The publication of another help to Urdu is justified by the success of this method during the eight years that it has been under trial. By the aid of type-writer and mimeograph, the lessons have so proved their utility that the Mission ordered all new missionaries to use this method, and that the Manual should be published. The author regrets the necessity of publishing, while so far from India, and without having brought the book up to his ideal of what it ought to be. That the principles of the Manual are final is beyond question. That the application is so, is too much to hope for. Through a detailed reading of a representative set of 20th century short stories in both languages, the author leads the reader towards a clear definition of the differences between Hindi and Urdu. The full translations of the stories have been extensively annotated to point out the details in which the Hindi and Urdu versions differ. An overview of early and contemporary Hindi/Urdu and Hindustani grammars and language teaching textbooks demonstrates the problems of correctly naming and identifying the two languages. This book now offers a detailed and systematic database of syntactic, morphological and semantic differences between the selected Hindi and Urdu stories. A useful tool for all scholars of modern Hindi/Urdu fiction, (socio-)linguistics, history or social sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In late nineteenth-century South Asia, the arrival of print fostered a dynamic and interactive literary culture. There, within the pages of Urdu-language periodicals and newspapers, readers found a public sphere that not only catered to their interests but encouraged their reactions to featured content. Cosmopolitan Dreams brings this culture to light, showing how literature became a site in which modern daily life could be portrayed and satirized, the protocols of modernity challenged, and new futures imagined. Drawing on never-before-translated Urdu fiction and prose and focusing on the novel and satire, Jennifer Dubrow shows that modern Urdu literature was defined by its practice of self-critique and parody. Urdu writers resisted the cultural models offered by colonialism, creating instead a global community of imagination in which literary models could freely circulate and be readapted, mixed, and drawn upon to develop alternative lines of thinking. Highlighting the participation of readers and writers from diverse social and religious backgrounds, the book reveals an Urdu cosmopolis where lively debates thrived in newspapers, literary journals, and letters to the editor, shedding fresh light on the role of readers in shaping vernacular literary culture. Arguing against current understandings of Urdu as an exclusively Muslim language, Dubrow demonstrates that in the late nineteenth century, Urdu was a cosmopolitan language spoken by a transregional, transnational community that eschewed identities of religion, caste, and class. The Urdu cosmopolis pictured here was soon fractured by the forces of nationalism and communalism. Even so, Dubrow is able to establish the persistence of Urdu cosmopolitanism into the present and shows that Urdu’s strong tradition as a language of secular, critical modernity did not end in the late nineteenth century but continues to flourish in film, television, and on line. In lucid prose, Dubrow makes the dynamic world of colonial Urdu print culture come to life in a way that will interest scholars of modern Asian literatures, South Asian literature and history, cosmopolitanism, and the history of print culture.

Book excerpt: This book explores the use of digital humanities (DH) to understand, interpret, and annotate the poetics of Indian literary and cultural texts, which circulate in digital forms — in manuscripts — and as oral or musical performance. Drawing on the linguistic, cultural, historical, social, and geographic diversity of Indian texts and contexts, it foregrounds the use of digital technologies — including minimal computing, novel digital humanities research and teaching methodologies, critical archive generation and maintenance — for explicating poetics of Indian literatures and generating scholarly digital resources which will facilitate comparative readings. With contributions from DH scholars and practitioners from across India, the United States, the United Kingdom, and more, this book will be a key intervention for scholars and researchers of literature and literary theory, DH, media studies, and South Asian Studies.
