Download or read book Hopelessly Alien written by Louis Corsino and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2024-05-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hopelessly Alien is an in-depth study of Italian immigration to Chicago Heights, Illinois, between 1910 and 1950. Drawing upon oral histories, interviews, historical documents, and census materials, Louis Corsino examines the critical concept of hope, which most immigration studies have cast in privatized, psychological terms as the motivation to emigrate in search of a better life. This investigation offers a more contentious, sociological perspective, depicting hope as both an ideological lure to recruit and manage the "foreign element" and as a resource immigrants employed to purchase acceptance and avoid a disparaging label as a "hopelessly alien" stranger. These dialectical processes are illustrated through the Italian immigrants' pursuit of occupational mobility and homeownership, and the appropriation of their children's hopes. Each became forms of cultural capital that demonstrated a public commitment to the American ethos of "joyful striving." Each provided measures of success, but these individual pursuits came at the expense of upsetting the necessary tension between individual and communal hopes.

Book Synopsis Chicago on the Make by : Andrew J. Diamond
Download or read book Chicago on the Make written by Andrew J. Diamond and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Effectively details the long history of racial conflict and abuse that has led to Chicago becoming one of America's most segregated cities. . . . A wealth of material."—New York Times Winner of the 2017 Jon Gjerde Prize, Midwestern History Association Winner of the 2017 Award of Superior Achievement, Illinois State Historical Society Heralded as America’s quintessentially modern city, Chicago has attracted the gaze of journalists, novelists, essayists, and scholars as much as any city in the nation. And, yet, few historians have attempted big-picture narratives of the city’s transformation over the twentieth century. Chicago on the Make traces the evolution of the city’s politics, culture, and economy as it grew from an unruly tangle of rail yards, slaughterhouses, factories, tenement houses, and fiercely defended ethnic neighborhoods into a truly global urban center. Reinterpreting the familiar narrative that Chicago’s autocratic machine politics shaped its institutions and public life, Andrew J. Diamond demonstrates how the grassroots politics of race crippled progressive forces and enabled an alliance of downtown business interests to promote a neoliberal agenda that created stark inequalities. Chicago on the Make takes the story into the twenty-first century, chronicling Chicago’s deeply entrenched social and urban problems as the city ascended to the national stage during the Obama years.

Book excerpt: History of Higher Education Annual, Volume 23 provides insight into the struggle for civil rights and desegregation of Southern higher education, illuminating how this conflict affected private, historically black colleges and white denominational colleges, while interpreting the dynamics of segregation and desegregation in South Carolina. Other contributions examine town-gown relations for Harvard students in the eighteenth century and the challenge of creating an urban public university in Chicago. Review essays examine the demographic and cultural transformation of British higher education and the curious phenomenon of historical encyclopedias of individual colleges and universities. History of Higher Education Annual will be of interest to historians, sociologists, educational policymakers as well as those concerned with the future of higher education in the United States and throughout the world. Roger L. Geiger is Distinguished Professor of Higher Education at the Pennsylvania State University. He has edited the History of Higher Education Annual since 1993.
