Download or read book Estuaries written by Peter J. Wangersky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-01-10 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aspects of the biogeochemistry of estuaries from a variety of environments, from the tropics to the Arctic, are discussed. In most cases the courses of these rivers have been altered by dams or diversions; the results of these changes on the nature of the estuary are also discussed, where such data is available. In the case of the Tasmanian rivers, the estuary of the Huon, a largely untouched river, is contrasted with that of the Derwent, a river heavily influenced by industry. The future state of all of these estuaries may be a sensitive indicator of shifts in global weather patterns.

Book Synopsis A Very British Journey by : Peter Hadden
Download or read book A Very British Journey written by Peter Hadden and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2024-08-28 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain is blessed with remarkable scenery and a wealth of history, and there is no better way to explore it than on foot. Although long distance walking is easy for the young and fit, for others it may not be so. This is a story of how a group of walkers, the majority of whom were in their seventh decade, walked from Hampshire to Iona, and what they discovered about this spectacular island along the way. The book is lavishly illustrated with photographs, most of which were taken during the walk. The walk was accomplished over one week in May every year for 5 years. Timings and routes are detailed and both the human and natural history of the places visited is explored. Starting in Hampshire, the walkers headed northwest, along the Thames, through the Cotswolds and into the Midlands. Then they followed the Pennines through the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales and the Northumbrian hinterland. From Lindisfarne the walkers headed to Scotland, traversing in turn the Borders, Southern Uplands, Glasgow, Western Highlands and over to Iona via Mull. All were amazed at how much ground could be covered and all returned with a much deeper understanding of Britain than when they had

Book Synopsis North York Moors and Yorkshire Wolds by : Tony Waltham
Download or read book North York Moors and Yorkshire Wolds written by Tony Waltham and published by The Crowood Press. This book was released on 2024-05-27 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is one of a popular series that seeks to tell the story of some of Britain's most beautiful landscapes. Written with the general reader – the walker, the lover of the countryside – firmly in mind, these pages open the door to a fascinating story of bygone oceans, deltas, mineralisation and glacial landscapes. Millions of years ago, rocks that now form the lovely terrains of the Moors and Wolds were laid down on the floors of shallow seas, and were then deformed by plate tectonics before being shaped by streams and rivers. The sandstones were left to form the high Moors, whereas the chalk was carved into the rolling Wolds. Ice Age lakes came and went, and all the time wave action was fretting the coastline into glorious and varied profiles. With the help of numerous maps, diagrams and photographs, most of which are taken from his personal collection, geologist Tony Waltham tells the fascinating story of eastern Yorkshire, explaining just how the landscapes of sandstone uplands, chalk hills and clay vales came to look as they do. Including suggestions for walks and places to visit to appreciate the best of the inland and coastal landforms, this accessible and readable book opens up amazing new perspectives for all who are interested in the diverse landscapes of this beautiful area.
Book Synopsis Trees Beyond the Wood (colour) by : Ian D. Rotherham
Download or read book Trees Beyond the Wood (colour) written by Ian D. Rotherham and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-07-05 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trees Beyond the Wood was written for a conference organised to celebrate twenty years of work since the first major conference on the theme of ancient trees and woodlands held in Sheffield, UK. It was held almost ten years after the landmark 2003 Working and Walking in the Footsteps of Ghosts event which started to raise issues and challenge assumptions about what is 'ancient' or 'natural' and what is meant by the terms 'wood' or 'woodland'. Since then on-going work in a range of disciplines across ecology, biology, landscape history, archaeology, forestry and nature conservation has continued the process of research and evaluation across the subject area. The collection of papers by contributors from across Europe reflects this broad range of interests and disciplines.
