Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am not a historian. I am simply an American citizen who grew up in Brooklyn, New York after my birth in the state of Virginia. My family, African-Americans from the south, decided to leave a life of farming and despair to move to New York to start anew, with nine children; three girls, six boys, and mother and father, who firmly believed that they could make a better life for all their family members. As the exception to the rule, I finished high school along with my brothers and sisters, and went on to college where I earned degrees in business and in law. This enabled me to become an officer and manager in the banking industry, where I served over twenty eight years. In addition I served a number of years as a businessman, served in state government, and served in the regular Army of the U.S. I have written other books on business and banking that were published by and for the banking community as training and management material. I am currently working on a series of business books which will be introduced to members of the business community as a source of training for new small business owners and entrepreneurs.

Book excerpt: The truth is, if you don't know your history, you lose your civilization and your culture. If the primary history that African-American children are taught boils down to "we came from slaves," we not only lose the rich complexity that is African-American history, but we start children off with a "less than equal" subtlety that disengages them from wanting to learn their history or to be a part of system which stands for principals of justice and equality but yet lives according to a much different system, one of corruption and profits at all cost. This needs to change.

Most of the books of that period deal with the Holocaust and other atrocities perpetrated by Hitler and his henchmen in Europe. While this tragedy was occurring in Europe, mainly in Poland, a different scenario was taking place thousands of miles away in the Taiga of Siberia, both involving Polish Jews. Soviet gulags are well-known, and so is Stalin’s regime, which finally collapsed in 1989. Th

Book excerpt: Of the few historical shortlists women make as influencers in the arts; the same few names are recognized; making the catalogue of powerful and gifted females feel like an small and exclusive club. The truth is; however; that far more women than we know can be credited with contributions to the industries in which they honed their crafts. In 1940; when the world was at war and the Civil Rights Movement had yet to turn the page of history; Hattie McDaniel became the first black woman to win an Academy Award. She and Anna May Wong fought hard to pave the way for actresses of color and fight against racial stereotypes. Maria Tallchief was the first; and one of the only; Native American prima ballerinas to push past the stage wings toward the limelight. More than just performers; these women were people as well. In Hidden in History: The Untold Stories of Female Artists; Musicians; and Writers; the lives of many of these artists are explored; from Edmonia Lewis' wrongful expulsion from higher learning to the boundary-breaking talents of the International Sweethearts of Rhythm and their untraditional start as a school band. This book is an open door to the lives of 10 female artists; wordsmiths and performers whose work has often been overlooked in the dusty pages of an often male-dictated narration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This amazing true story of America’s first Black generals, Benjamin O. Davis Sr. and Jr., a father and son who helped integrate the American military and created the Tuskegee Airmen, is “the book Black America needs in this moment” (Eboni K. Williams, lawyer and cohost of State of the Culture). Red Tails, George Lucas’s celebration of America’s first Black flying squadron, the Tuskegee Airmen, should have been a moment of victory for Doug Melville. He expected to see his great-uncle Benjamin O. Davis Jr.—the squadron’s commander—immortalized on-screen for his selfless contributions to America. But as the film rolled, Doug was shocked when he realized that Ben Jr.’s name had been omitted and replaced by the fictional Colonel A. J. Bullard. And Ben’s father, Benjamin O. Davis Sr., America’s first Black general who helped integrate the military, was left out completely. Dejected, Doug looked inward and realized that unless he worked to bring their inspirational story to light, it would remain hidden from the world just as it had been concealed from him. In this “thoughtful, highly readable blend of family and military history” (Kirkus Reviews), Melville shares his quest to rediscover his family’s story across five generations, from post-Civil War America to modern day Asia and Europe. In life, the Davises were denied the recognition and compensation they’d earned, but through his journey, Melville uncovers something greater: that dedication and self-sacrifice can move proverbial mountains—even in a world determined to make you invisible. Invisible Generals recounts the lives of a father and his son who always maintained their belief in the American dream. As the inheritor of their legacy, Melville retraces their steps, advocates for them to receive their long-overdue honors and unlocks the potential we all hold to retrieve powerful family stories lost to the past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1967 Israel occupied the western section of Syria's Golan Heights, expelling 130,000 residents and leaving only a few thousand Arab inhabitants clustered in several villages. Sometimes characterised as the 'forgotten occupation', the western Golan Heights have been transformed by Israeli colonisation, including the appropriation of land and water resources, economic development and extensive military use. This landmark volume is the first academic study in English of Arab politics and culture in the occupied Golan Heights. It focuses on an indigenous community, known as the Jawlanis, and their experience of everyday colonisation and resistance to settler colonisation. Chapters cover how governance is carried out in the Golan, from Israel's use of the education system and collective memory, to its development of large-scale wind turbines which are now a symbol of Israeli encroachment. To illustrate the ways in which the current regime of Israeli rule has been contested, there are chapters on the six-month strike of 1982, youth mobilisation in the occupied Golan, Palestinian solidarity movements, and the creation of Jawlani art and writing as an act of resistance. Rich in ethnographic detail and with chapters from diverse disciplines, the book is unique in bringing together Jawlani, Palestinian and UK researchers. The innovative format - with shorter 'reflections' from young Arab researchers, activists and lawyers that respond to more traditional academic chapters - establishes a bold new 'de-colonial' approach.
