Book excerpt: The inviscid flow field about a right circular cone in unsteady planar flight is analyzed by a perturbation technique which is an extension of Stone's treatment of the cone at small yaw. A solution is found in the form of infinite series in the time rates of change of the pitch rate and angle of attack. The linear stability derivatives as well as 'higher order' stability derivatives are presented for a wide range of cone angles and Mach numbers. The stability derivatives as obtained from this solution are compared to results obtained from second order potential theory, Newtonian impact theory, and an unsteady flow theory due to Zartarian, Hsu, and Ashley. Both the potential theory and the impact theory predict that the stability derivative (angle of attack) approaches a value which is on the order of 10 percent to 20 percent of the stability derivative (pitch rate). Numerical results obtained from the present theory are also compared to ground-test data. The agreement is found to be generally good, although the data in some instances indicate a pronounced Reynolds number effect.

Book excerpt: The report presents a summary of the important results obtained on a combined analytical and experimental program for investigation of the hypersonic dynamic stability of re-entry vehicles. An unsteady flow field solution is described which predicts the static and dynamic stability characteristics for vehicles which are executing small amplitude oscillations about zero angle of attack. Solutions were obtained for sharp and blunted, axisymmetric and two-dimensional shapes in real gas equilibrium flow. The experimental program was conducted in AEDC tunnel 'C' at Mach 10 and in the Ling-Temco-Vought Hot Shot tunnel at Mach 14 and 20 to obtain dynamic stability characteristics of a 10 degree cone. Data are presented to show the effect of bluntness ratio, reduced frequency, center of gravity location, Reynolds number and Mach number. Comparisons are made with various theoretical results and limited correlations are shown which establish significant trends.

Analytical perturbation techniques are used to study the supersonic flow past slightly elliptical cones, cones whose cross-sections deviate slightly but arbitrarily from that of a right circular cone, cones of small longitudinal curvature, and right circular cones undergoing small harmonic pitching and/or plunging motions. These studies all involve perturbations of the well-known solution for supersonic flow past a right circular cone. Closed-form analytical results are achieved through the use of an approximation that accurately predicts results over the entire range of the hypersonic similarity parameter. These results give hypersonic limiting solutions that agree well with other independent analyses and, at the same time, agree exactly with linearized theory in the linear theory limit. Comparisons with experiment, where possible, also show good agreement.
