The collection captures the changing social, cultural, and political landscapes of Papua New Guinea. The collection is a blend of published and unpublished short stories. The stories cover journeys people make from their unperturbed societies to ones in constant negotiation with change. These stories blend lived experience with imagined ones among Papua New Guineans. The book highlights the sometimes uncomfortable relationships and challenges emerging in different sociocultural encounters. One major them runs through all stories in this collection: Mask. People wear different masks to view themselves and other. People have different opinions and views when viewing a mask from outside of a mask. People choose to wear a painted mask or an unpainted one. Steven Edmund Winduo is a senior lecturer in Literature and English Communication at the University of Papua New Guinea.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was 1989 when Robert Llewellyn first had his head encased in the one-piece latex foam-rubber balaclava that is the head of Kryten in Red Dwarf series three, and it gave him a distinctly funny turn. Gazing at his own reflection and seeing the face of a mechanoid robot staring back was surprisingly scary, not to mention uncomfortable and rather sweaty. And he couldn't even eat his lunch. Since then, he has sweated, frozen, been set on fire, exploded, spent thousands of hours in the make-up chair and thousands more being taunted by Craig Charles for being a middle-class b*****d. So it is a testament to the joyful camaraderie and life-enhancing silliness of the world of Red Dwarf that twenty-three years later, Robert is still willing to risk life, limb and hairline to don the rubber torture helmet for Red Dwarf X, the recent triumphant return of the motley band of space bums. Originally published in 1993 after series six, The Man in the Rubber Mask has now been completely updated with 43.7% extra smeg.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World of Spirits and Ancestors in the Art of Western Sub-Saharan Africa illustrates for the first time a collection of African Sculpture at the Museum of Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. The masks and figurative carvings from the late nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century are from two sources: Ambassador and Mrs. Julius Walker's gift to ICASALS (International Center for Arid and Semiarid Land Studies), now on permanent loan to the Museum, and the Elliot Howard Collection. Howard, an artist and authority on antiques, chose examples of sculpture for their "variety and aesthetic appeal". His hope was that the pieces he assembled would provide new discoveries for those unacquainted with the art of Africa and an art experience that would "enhance mutual respect among people". Fittingly, then, a context for understanding is the focus of Elizabeth Skidmore Sasser's book. As the title suggests, The World of Spirits and Ancestors introduces carefully chosen examples of masks and figures as social and spiritual communications imbued with the living history and culture of the various peoples of western sub-Saharan Africa. Sasser emphasizes that geography and climate - ranging from semiarid deserts to tropical rain forests - influence not only the art but also the habitations and ceremonial life of the region. More than 180 drawings and illustrations reflect the creative genius that continues to meet environmental challenges and to express the distinctive contributions of the cultures and the people of western sub-Saharan Africa.

Book excerpt: 1890. Yamamoto Kiyoki is a Japanese art student, dreaming of studying in Paris with the inspiring and vibrant Impressionist painters. Yamamoto Ryusei is Kiyoki’s father. Ryusei’s art, carving intricate masks for traditional Japanese theater, has been his refuge from loneliness since the death of his beloved wife, and he is revered as the most inspired artist of his kind. He expects his only son to honor the traditions of his family and his country, not to be seduced by Western ideas of what is beautiful. Ryusei hopes Kiyoki will follow his own distinguished career, creating masks that will become the family’s crowning achievement. But what is a father to do when his son’s path is not what he had planned? And how can a son honor his father, and yet fulfill his own destiny? READERS GUIDE INSIDE

Book excerpt: First published in 1910, this book presents a detailed account regarding the birth of tragedy by the renowned classical scholar Sir William Ridgeway (1858-1926). Ridgeway develops the viewpoint, first put forward in a 1904 lecture before the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies, that the origins of tragedy can be found 'in the worship of the dead'. The main focus of the text is on Ancient Greek tragedy, but reference is also made to dramatic traditions among 'Asiatic Peoples'. Illustrative figures are incorporated throughout. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in Ancient Greek culture, anthropology, literary criticism and the nature of the tragic.

Book excerpt: For at least 20,000 years, masking has been a mark of cultural evolution and an indication of magical-religious sophistication in society. This book provides a comprehensive understanding of the mask as a powerful cultural phenomenon--a means by which human groupings attempted to communicate their dignity and sense of purpose, as well as establish a continuum between the natural and supernatural worlds. It addresses the distinctive environments within which masks flourished, and analyzes the mask as a manifestation of art, ethnology and anthropology.
